Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips DVP5140 Multiformat DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media SupportCustomer Review: Good player, Poor user manual Summary: 4 Stars
I'm happy with this player. It does what it's suppose to do, but not all features are described in the manual that comes with it. Additions to the manual can be found online at [...] This decribes how you can resume playback from where you left off if you turn off the unit, how to open the tray, and other things.
One thing that I really like about this player is that the remote is well laid out and not cramped. You cna change the chapters, fast forward or fast reverse, open the tray, or get back to the DVD's main menu.
The unit supports Windows Media but only WMA files on audio disks. It will not play WMV videos.
In two weeks time the unit has worked without fail. It does not skip. It plays music CDs. The picture is sharp and the audio is great. The unit is somewhat slow to respond to commands, but I think this is inherent in all DVD players.
I bought this unit for $[...] plus shipping from a vendor who lists here at Amazon. This is a good price for this unit.
Customer Review: Nice multiregion DVD player. Summary: 5 Stars
The Philips DVP5140 Multiformat DVD Player does indeed play any region DVD on PAL and NTSC televisions. In order to do that, you must follow the directions prescribed by former reviewer H.A. Emet on his July 27, 2006 review entitled Play NTSC and PAL DVD's.
If you are going to use this DVD player overseas, keep in mind that you will need to use a voltage and amp adaptor or transformer. I personally am using the small and convenient Philips Magnavox foreign voltage adaptor model PM62068 I bought at a local hardware store. It is working like a charm and it does not take up the space nor does it weigh as much as your grandmother's stove.
I bought this player through Amazon and I am very pleased with the promptness in the shipping and the price was fair. It arrived in good condition. The picture quality is excellent compared to other DVD players I have had. Because of the slim design, make sure the DVD is securely placed in the tray before pushing the tray back in.
I give this 5 stars.
Customer Review: 4 months old and trouble... Summary: 1 Stars
I had the predecessor to this model, which lasted a year before refusing to read any DVDs. I read the reviews on this model, which said that it was 'new and improved'.
3 months after receiving it, and it can't play DVDs any more, and has a 1 in 4 success rate playing CDs.
Most disappointed. When 'playing' DVDs (assuming it will even load the DVD), it stops every couple of seconds, pauses for around 10 seconds, and might play again for a couple of seconds, or freeze altogether.
My second Philips DVD player, and despite being feature-packed, if it only lasts a few months...
I won't be buying a Philips DVD player again, which is unfortunate as they normally make reliable equipment.
Maybe I got 2 bad ones, but it's time for me to look elsewhere for a reliable DVD player.
It gets a lot of good reviews, but I don't think the product is that old - it was released just over a year ago, I believe. So, time will tell how other people's players are for longevity.
Customer Review: Poor design and build quality Summary: 2 Stars
the only reason to consider this player is the fact that you can program it to play mutiregion DVDs with a minimum of fuss. apart from that, it's a shoddy product. the build is flaky - the buttons are absurdly small and cheap-feeling. and the remote - don't get me started; it is so poorly designed that you practically have to be standing right in front of the unit at close range to use it (the remote's infrared transmitter is so recessed on the underside of the remote that there is an extremely limited set of angles at which it can work). this effectively defeats the point of having a remote. did anyone properly test this thing? the absence of track advance buttons on the unit itself isn't great either. overall, this is simply a shoddy product, even more flakily-designed and made than its decent predecessor, the DVP 642. i'd recommend buying it ONLY as your multiregion DVD player for occasional use. if you want a well-designed, user-friendly workhorse for everyday use, look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Inexpensive electronics usually come at an extra cost. Summary: 3 Stars
I just bought this DVD player, and right out of the box it does what it claims to do. It's a simple unit, made for no frills use. I partly wanted this as a replacement for our old Philips DVD player of 7 years (which continues to work fine despite my past issues with other Philips electronics). But the main reason for buying this is to use it with my stereo system (by the TV, also) to play MP3-coded CD's. Overall, for the price, this was a fair purchase. Here's why:
Pro's:
-low cost
-excellent sound quality of audio and MP3 discs
-mulitple sound and video settings to choose from
-simple operation and set up
-easy navigation of features
-slim design
Con's:
-narrow remote range; must point remote deliberately and carefully
-slow response time between operations (selecting chapters, etc.)
-lack of sync between audio and video
-no tray-open control from remote (negligible complaint, really)
