Customer Review: Terrible Customer Service-Poor Quality
Summary: 1 Stars

I received a similar clock radio as a gift (model AJ3980/37). The CD player didnt work but the radio and alarm did function okay. Customer service is a nightmare to work with. After hours of hold time and talking with uncooperative customer service agents, and after getting my sister from 3 states away to fax them the Amazon receipt, they still didnt want to help me. Finally after asking to talk with a supervisor they agreed to replace it, but only if we paid for shipping! After learning from other reviews that the CD players on these radios have loud mechanical noises and often fail, we are not sure if it is worth sending it in for replacement. We would rate it at 0 stars if 0 stars was an option.

We will never purchase another Philips product again and advise others to do the same.

Customer Review: Very Bright Display - CD Player acting up after 6 months
Summary: 2 Stars

After 6 months I have deleted my original review... My main beef with this product is that I had to put a pillow in front of the clock to avoid the harshly bright dislpay...it's way too bright in a dark room when you are trying to sleep. More recently (after 6 months), the CD player has taken to stopping in the middle of a CD. The lens over the laser/detector looks clean as a whistle, so I don't have a clue what's broken.

I would not recommend this product, in fact I purchased a new alarm clock that projects the time onto the ceiling because the overly bright AJ3910 was too much work to deal with at night. I Highly recommend getting a clock radio with a dimmer function. I also noticed that it appears this is no longer available directly from Amazon...

Customer Review: 2 failures in less than a year
Summary: 1 Stars

We bought this unit to use in our daughters room. We use it specifically for the CD player to "sing" her to sleep at night. The first one we had died after about 4 months of use. Putting any CD in it resulted in it saying no disc. Philips replaced it at the cost of shipping which wasn't too bad, but now our second one has met with the same fate after another 4 months.
I have no idea what the cause is other than poor quality components. My wife has a philips CD clock radio (earlier model) that is more than 6 years old. She uses it every night before bed and it is humming along just fine.
I wouldn't recommend this model. Until you see a change in model number I would assume that the same poor QC has gone into all of them.

Customer Review: Poor Quality FM Tuner
Summary: 2 Stars

We have owned this exact Philips clock radio for 3 years. The product is cheaply designed, or uses inferior components. Out of frustration we are now looking for a replacement because the radio cannot stay tuned to the major radio stations in Los Angeles. Given the unstable fidelity of the FM reception, I don't believe there's a good value here.

I will concede that the introduction of "HD Radio" in Los Angeles may play a role in the poor sound. Once the major stations converted to HD, the unit's sound quality deteriorated. I switched from one station to another, then the 2nd station converted to HD in January '08.

Sadly, my CDs have always sounded terrible on this product.

Customer Review: Design flaws abound
Summary: 2 Stars

The sound out of this unit is terrible. It's hollow with virtually no bass. Setting the time isn't very intuitive. It's hard to remember which side wheel is for volume and which is the analog (not digital) radio tuner. The power button doesn't really need to be there; rather there should be a switch setting for off. Speaking of the switch selector, it's a real problem when you want to go to sleep listening to one thing and wake up with another. For example, I can't fall asleep listening to a CD without the alarm being set to play the CD. I have to switch it to the alarm buzzer if I want to have the buzzer wake me. Can't recommend it.
