Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips PHDTV3 Indoor Amplified UHF/VHF/FM/HDTV Antenna

Customer Review: Works but the cheaper Philips rabbit ears works better
Summary: 2 Stars

I've had this for almost 3 years now, along with the cheaper Philips MANT-310 Philips MANT-310 Amplified Indoor Antenna.

I've used both antennas in Raleigh NC and in Tacoma WA, swapping them out on the same TV equipment. In both locales, in all cases the cheaper MANT-310 delivered better UHF DTV signal, FM signal, and far better VHF DTV signal. In Raleigh, ABC 11 reverted to using VHF RF channel 11 upon analog shutdown (they were on a UHF channel mapped as 11 during the transition). ABC 11 disappeared entirely from the TV using the PHDTV3 no matter where I pointed it or how I adjusted the short rabbit ear VHF elements. On the "traditional" VHF rabbit ears/UHF loop MANT-310 antenna, I still got channel 11.

I swapped the antennas so that I was testing in the other location - moved the MANT-310 to the living room setup and the PHDTV3 to the bedroom setup. The "no channel 11" problem moved with the antenna, so it wasn't a difference in TV tuner sensitivity. On FM, channels I got in FM HD (Hybrid Digital) on my Cambridge Soundworks and Insignia HD Radios were only in analog, and one channel I regularly listened to in noise-free full-quieting analog stereo dropped to hissy in-and-out-of-mono reception.

Upon moving to Tacoma: same difference. Here, TV channels 9(PBS) and 11(CW) broadcast on the actual RF VHF channels 9 and 11. Can't get them at all with the PHDTV3; 11 comes in fine and 9 can be convinced to come in using the MANT-310. HD Radio the same story too - The MANT-310 will even pick up KBCS-FM from Bellevue in HD sometimes, and if not, in full-quieting analog stereo. With the PHDTV3, it's back to hissy sometimes-mono analog. I can get KEXP's low-power FM OTA signal in Tacoma with the MANT-310 (hissy, but there) while it's not on the dial with the PHDTV3. On the UHF DTV stations (most of them), the PHDTV3 does work, but it's fussier.

Save your $4 and get the cheaper Philips MANT-310. Works great!

Equipment used (quite modest, which fits with these lower-cost antenna setups):
HDTV: Samsung 220HD (22" monitor/720p HDTV combo)
SD DTV: Old Samsung 25" CRT TV and old GE 10" TV (Portacolor lives - at Goodwill!) with DTV converter boxes.
DTV Converter Boxes: DigitalStream (with LG DTV chipset) and Insignia (made by LG with their chipset)
