Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips AJ3600 Time Projection Clock RadioCustomer Review: Cheaply built, features poorly implemented Summary: 2 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I am all for innovative designs when it comes to clock radios but I feel even stronger about usability and how features are implemented. This little 2-alarms/clock/radio with time projection manages to implement most if not all of them either poorly or very poorly.
But, let's discuss the goods and the bads, and I will begin with what I liked.
WHAT I LIKED:
- There is a 3-minute no-battery-needed backup. In other words, if you go through a less-than-three-minute blackout or if you actually fed it batteries and you are in the process of changing them, it won't forget the time or the radio stations you saved. And, speaking of the stations...
- You can save up to 10 stations, 5 on the AM (do they have that many there?) and 5 on the FM band.
- Takes batteries, just in case blackouts last longer than 3 minutes.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- Overall feeling of 'cheap built' and 'easy to fall apart'. Cheaper build than the price seems to suggest.
- The time display (black on backlit yellow) is dim enough to be hard to see during the day.
- The radio's digital tuner does not have an 'auto-seek' mode. The only way to get to the stations is by repeatedly pressing a + or a - button, always careful not to push too hard and see it disintegrate - remember the 'cheap built' and 'fragile' feeling.
- Buttons layout and the feel - must push relatively hard. It's interesting to have the buttons on the sides but they are also hard to find when needed. On the other hand, most of the radio's 'top' is occupied by a giant 'plate' that controls the brightness of the backlit yellow - strange.
- The 'time' projector is pretty weak. Given that this radio plugs into a power outlet it should and I suspect it could have been a lot brighter.
- The very size and shape of this device makes it impractical to use the radio or the alarms if you bought it mainly for the time projector because the slightest touch would move the display away from the 'easy to read at night' spot you spent 5 minutes to set.
WHAT IS JUST AVERAGE:
Everything else. It's got 2 alarms - buzzer or radio station. Sound quality matches what one would expect from one of the cheaper clock radios.
MY ASSESSMENT AND RATING:
I will probably use this for the time projector to show me the time at night but it's very unlikely that I will ever use the alarm or the radio - I explained above that the slightest touch or nudge would upset the projector time display.
I will have to rate this as a 2-star - it means 'I don't like it' on Amazon's 5-star scale because that's how I feel about it.
UPDATE - RELEGATED TO THE BASEMENT
Sadly, our old, 10+ years old alarm clock found its way back to our bedroom and the shiny Philips AJ3600 Time Projection Clock Radio ended up in the basement. Reasons?
- The time display is really, really hard to read both during daytime and at night.
- The projector is weak and the projected time is too small for me to read without glasses - I had a weather station with projector before that could display numbers twice as large and twice as bright.
- The buttons layout is terrible.
It had to go to the basement because none of the kids wanted it in their rooms. Sorry, Philips. I know you can do a lot better than this.
