Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips 9-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Metal)Customer Review: Mac User Review - good picture quality, no software for the mac Summary: 4 Stars
If you are a Mac user and are looking for an easy to use frame for your parents, DON'T buy this. If you are a Mac user and have photoshop then this is a good quality frame once you have gone through a few extra steps. Personally I really like this frame and would buy it again but the software doesn't work on a mac, in fact it froze my Mac G5 10.4.10 several times when trying to connect the frame directly using USB.
The SOLUTION: use photoshop to crop the images to 688x448 150dpi, native frame resolution. Then transfer the photos to a SD card or similar using a USB card reader which are cheap now days. I picked up a generic reader for under $10 and it works great. By using photoshop I have complete control over which areas get cropped and it fills the frame 100% so you don't have black edges around the photos. It does take some extra time to manually crop each image but the end result is awesome for a pixel perfectionist.
The interface on the frame is average, it could definitely use some improvement but it is not something you have to deal with too often once you have the frame running with the auto timer set. Its really a non-issue for me.
The things I like best are the picture quality, viewing angles, and the timer. It looks the best if the viewing distance is less than 10-12 feet, any more than that and it looks a little small.
Customer Review: Poor Docs, Lousy Support, Doesn't Work With Memory Sticks Summary: 1 Stars
Bought this as an XMAS present to myself - to bring along family photos while on business travel. I'm now on the 2nd unit (exchanged directly w/Phillips), and am still having the same issue with it not reliably working with external (in my case, Sony memory sticks).
The internal memory is pitiful, and unless you want to resize all the photos you put in it, you are not going to be able to hold very many internally.
I've yet to get the auto on/off feature to work, and while it is perhaps a PC friendly device, it's certainly not always Mac friendly - the controls are cumbersome to work with, and the directions meager.
I wanted to be able to carry this in a backpack or carryon bag, the fact that the support stand can't be folded tight against the unit makes it difficult to do this - of course, no mention of this in the product description.
Also no mention that it only supports older memory sticks - NO SUPPORT for the new, MS ProDuo sticks (and no mention of that in the product descriptions either)
I thought I would get a quality product from Phillips, and this certainly looked like it had potential - unfortunately, it's turned out to be a piece of junk, one I've been screwing around with for so long that it's probably not returnable.
Don't waste your time and Review: Excellent digital photo frame Summary: 5 Stars
This photo frame is an excellent one. It's design actually resembles a real photo unlike the majority of them that have a border that's 3" thick.
The features are very nice, with an easily removable face plate (magnetic), timers for auto-on and auto-off (3 of them), a cool group of transition effects between each photo (optional), and the ability to position it wide or tall as the format (it has a motion sensor that re-positions the images to match the orientation).
This is in fact a 9" model - I couldn't find it on Philips website, but it does exist. It's a nice size - almost perfectly matched to a normal photograph.
The only minor complaint is that the screen - though very nice quality - does not appear to look like a real photograph. I don't know if that was a faulty assumption to expect it to look just like a photo or not, but the LCD in this frame does not match a photo. It does have great colors, a bright picture (I like it on medium so it blends in with the room and looks more like a real photo), and a pretty wide viewing angle.
It's easy to drop pictures into it, but I recommend getting an SD card to put photos onto - it makes the process even easier.
A definite 5/5 when compared with the other digital photo frames I've seen.
Customer Review: Great picture, but FLAWED software. Summary: 2 Stars
I bought one because it was reputed to have the best quality and picture. It has a good picture, but equal to the Infini 8" frame sold at Comp USA (also flawed quality) and it is very nicely built. Trouble was that when I loaded my Memory stick with about 80 ordinary JPEGs it would only recognize the pics sometimes, other times not. I had to repeatedly plug in the chip before it would recognize them, and it NEVER played them all the way through. It kept cycling back to the source selection screen when I tried to play them. A terribly frustrating exercize. Save the extra money and look for the Infini 10.4" frame. It has a pretty good picture but it plays first and every time no matter what. The 8" model has a picture equal to this Phillips (but I had to return both Infini 8" screens due to quality and software issues: remotes bad and software flawed in one.) All in all, Phillips needs to refine the tolerance of this device to files and chips and greatly simplify the functionality. I feel we should be able to plug in a loaded chip and just press play... that's all. Not this one! . I had no folders, no odd types of files, and still no luck (I tried folders too, to no avail) Sorry, it's NOT ready for prime time.
Customer Review: Totally recommended! Made 3 great gifts! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought 3 of these Philips frames in the past month for gifts. They are awesome. No trouble with any of them. I read a lot of reviews beforehand which was very helpful and made my experience with the frames trouble-free. The best way (which I read from someone else) to put photos on, is to buy the $9 all-in-one card reader (USB device) which reads a variety of memory cards. This acts like a little hard drive then. Put all your photos on the card in a folder (not on the main level or root). Then insert the card into the frame and you are done! No problems at all! I did not copy any of the photos onto the frame memory, only the card, so I can edit my library whenever I want easily from my computer and dump the new library on the card.
The date function is the only thing I found to be defective. You can't set a date past the 12th. Which I read was a problem for others too. But if that is the only glitch so far, I am pleased.
The metal frame is by far the best I think. Looks and feels expensive and fits to any decor. I would not advise the so-called Wood frame. It's plastic, and looks cheap and 70's-ish.
Awesome frame, a great gift and now I need a 4th one for myself!
