Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Philips PHDTV1 Silver Sensor UHF/HDTV Digital Indoor TV AntennaCustomer Review: Performance depends on tuner Summary: 3 Stars
I tried this unit out with a friend's Pinnacle USB tuner, just to see if I could receive adequate signals before buying a HDTV tuner. The antenna/tuner combination worked fine, pulling in all 13 digital channels that were in my area. I then went out and purchased a Samsung HD TV Television Tuner (DTB-H260F), and the Phillips antenna, and could only pull in 7 stations. I tried moving it up to my attic, but that only added 2 stations. I proceeded to buy an amplified antenna at Home Depot, and can again receive all 13 channels as originally with the Pinnacle tuner and this model antenna. I'm 6-7 miles from all the stations - and all are within a 5-10 degree arc, so I presume that the lack of performance is due to the Samsung tuner wanting a stronger signal, and not my inability to point the antenna in the right direction.
Bottom line - it might work for you, then again, it might not.
Customer Review: Philips PHDTV1 Indoor Antenna Review Summary: 4 Stars
Amazon price is lowest. This model antenna works well for OTA signals. Have two of these units. Position and height are Hypercritical for this or any other indoor antenna. Use in same building and same position but on two different floors. Second floor reception VG to Excellent. First floor Good to Very good with some "drops" or need for tweaking by a few inches or rotation. Position in rooms found by a trial and error process. Less suseptible to body movement signal interuption than a powered TERK unit I tried (TERK-5 ?) Also the Terk unit is inconvenient by its need for a plug in power supply and its relitively large horizontal "Bow Tie" Configuration, while offering no advantage in sensitivity over the Philips units. This report based on my need or desire to receive HDTV signals for two HDTV receivers-signals NOT YET provided for Local channels in my area by DISH TV.
Customer Review: No better than any other set-top antenna. Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased one of these for my mother's condo in San Francisco. She didn't want cable or satellite since she rarely watches much TV. I had tried 2 other antennas in the $20 to $50 range with poor luck. With all three, I could only get 2 English channels (NBC, CBS in standard def) with a lot of distortion and static. But all of the Spanish channels came in as clear as if we were living in downtown Mexico City. No HD channels came in at all.
I though it might just be that her condo is poorly located. But when I tried it at my house, I could get no channels at all. My other antennas worked a little better, but none worked well. I have Direct TV so I don't use any of the antennas. I just wanted to test them.
This antenna is no better than any other set-top antenna I have tried. It is a little worse than others at my house. I was not impressed.
Customer Review: Great if you live near a water tower Summary: 4 Stars
I live within 5 miles of most of the TV transmitters in my area. I also live within 1/4 mile of a huge water tower. TV, FM, even cell phone signals around here get a ton of interference from multipath thanks to all that RF bouncing off that water tower. With plain old rabbit ears, I couldn't even watch analog TV because of the interference. I've seen some complaints about this being a directional antenna, but that's the whole point of this antenna. It's directional, so it is much, MUCH less sensitive to multipath interference, which was annoying in analog and completely kills digital signals. It may be flimsy but it works, and mine hasn't fallen apart yet. I am able to get all the local channels with this antenna except for one because their transmitter is in the opposite direction. With omnidirectional antennas, I can't get anything.
Customer Review: Cable or Satellite? Just Say No ! Summary: 5 Stars
I have no use for cable or satellite TV so both of my sets just use rabbit ears - until now. I just purchased a "digital ready" 13 inch TV to replace my 25 year old 12 inch black and white set, and bought this digital antenna at the same time. It works great providing you point it the right direction. Once I had it pointed perfectly, I get all stations without further adjustment. And I never realized that many TV station had digital "sub stations" until now. For example, my local PBS station (channel 8) has a total of 4 channels (8.1, 8.2, 8.3, and 8.4), each with different programming. Some of the other channels do similarly. I never knew this, very cool. Now I have something like 2 to 3 times the number stations to choose from, and they all come in very clear and sharp thanks to this inexpensive antenna. Five stars.
