Customer Review: Philips PHDTV1 Digital HDTV-UHF Indoor Antenna
Summary: 5 Stars

Originally my plan was to purchase a full size roof mounted antenna and install it in my attic as opposed to the roof. Rather than go through the initial expense of such an expensive antenna, I thought I'd give the Phillips a shot first since it's supposed to be the FCC's "reference antenna". Upon connecting it to my Dish Network 722 HD-DVR, I was only able to receive 1 local station with it located adjacent to my TV. Since I was going to have to mount the larger roof top antenna in my attic I thought it would be worth it to run the cable and try the Philips in the attic to see what it could do. The attic plan worked to perfection. I received every local station being broadcast in the Charleston, SC area. I will state that this antenna is highly directional so it will take some fidgeting in order to get everything perfect but it was well worth the effort. It's not the sturdiest antenna on the market but once you find the sweet spot, you'll more than likely never have to touch it again. At this price, how can you afford not to give it a chance?

Customer Review: Good Antenna
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased a powered Terk TV5 antenna before buying the nonpowerd Philips PHDTV1. Both work equally well. They both do a good job of pulling in the stations. The Philips PHDTV1 will save you a little money since it's not always plugged in and sucking electricity. I bought the antenna for reception only and it does a solid job.

You may have to get up and manually turn the antenna to point it in different directions to get the best reception. Unfortunately, it's not a swivel base. The reason for the adjustment is that HD TV broadcasts on a tighter and narrower beam. A signal that's coming in at a right angle to this antenna might not get picked up. Still, I would recommend this antenna because it works well and is inexpensive. The design is kind of art deco-ish.

I have two small drawback with this antenna which is why I gave it a 4 star and not a 5 star rating. The plug in on the back of the antenna seems flimsy and easy to break and the wire "fins" are easily bent, so be careful and gentle when setting it up.

Customer Review: Shoddy product, broke in days, similar Terk solidly built.
Summary: 1 Stars

The coaxial cable comes directly out of end of fin bar, it broke off. Amazon good about refund. I replaced with a similar looking Terk that is really well built. In Terk, coaxial cable connected solidly to base unit and fin bar makes connection when plugged into socket at top of the base. Superficially in photographs they look similar but Philips is shoddy, poor engineering. Terk also has more heft to it, you want that stability when it is sitting on a table. I've never gone out of my way to write a negative review. They look similar, but if you have the chance to see these in a store you'll see the difference immediately. Or if you look at pictures, study them carefully and you'll see what I mean. Actually looking at picture now on right of page they don't even show the cable, which is a misrepresentation of the product, because it is soldered to directly to the end of fin bar and not removable unless it breaks off and then is unfixable.

Customer Review: Good Product, better price
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a replacement for my grandmother's rabbit-ears antenna, as she just stepped up to the digital tier and has a nice 32" LCD Television (yet no cable!)

The quality of the signal is incredibly better than standard rabbit-ears/FM loop amplified antennas by comparison. For starters, this unit doesn't need to be plugged in to an AC outlet, which is a definite plus.

It worked with all channels that we could at least pick up on the old antenna, and did so without snow in the picture, no black and white channels, and increased the signal strength of the ATSC broadcasts in our area.

I recommend placing this antenna as high as you can in the room, and if you know the direction of your station, align it. This also increases signal strength, but this is NOT a directional antenna. All stations from the area are crisp and clear, just the ones we aimed it at were a tiny bit better.

Customer Review: Wow!

I live 50 miles northeast of Sioux City, Iowa, on a farm that we rent. We receive DirecTV, but have to rely on the free local over-the-air channels. I was one of the skeptics who had heard plenty of people tell me that I could not get decent digital reception with an indoor antenna, especially out here in the boondocks.

Well, after reading all (!) the reviews for this antenna, I took the plunge and ordered it. I placed it in the west-facing window sill of our living room, and set up the digital converter according to its instructions. I am very pleased to report that instead of the three fuzzy local channels I received earlier, I now receive 13 with a quality that rivals the channels I get with DirecTV.

This is an outstanding product, a terrific value, and one I will not hesitate to recommend to anyone.

Now I can watch the playoffs; oh boy, the Mrs. will love this! ;-)
