Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of 6ft Toslink to Mini Toslink CableCustomer Review: Performs fantastically with an Intel Mac Mini! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently bought an Intel Mac Mini and was faced with both a golden opportunity to improve the quality of my sound output, and a dilemma. The Mini can output audio by both an RCA jack and offers optical output as well. The quandry? They're both built into a single outlet, which means that the optical interface isn't your standard TOSLink/SPDIF-sized port. But I couldn't sit by and not take advantage of feeding output directly to my home theater digital decoder. The TOSLink to Mini cable fit the bill perfectly. It's sturdy (sturdy enough anyway; you don't want to go yanking on any optical cable, but handled reasonably they're going to last), and outputs amazing, crystal clear sound quality. My iTunes library has never sounded better...same with DVD titles (now the MacOS needs to gain playback support for BluRay).
Best of all, despite the Mini-TOSLink interface type being impossible to find in your local brick-and-mortal type outlets, this was priced not only fairly but very compellingly on Amazon (at the time of my purchase anyway). I'd recommend this to anybody with a Mini, or any similar audio output!

Unlike the reviewer who got a cable with normal toslink plugs on both ends, I did in fact get a correct one with one normal and one mini, but it's not *exactly* like what's pictured here: the cable between the plugs is extremely thin, maybe 1/2 - 2/3 the thickness of the miniplug's neck.
This is arguably a good thing since it takes up less space (fiber doesn't have the same problems with resistance and interference as a conventional wire does and therefore doesn't need to be particularly thick), but I worry about its long-term durability.... this might not be a cable you want to keep loose in a bag with a lot of other stuff.
On the plus side though it does come with little silicone covers for the tips, even if the picture suggests it might not. They're not attached with strings though, so be careful you don't lose them.
As far as using it, I can say mine works fine. Connected my macbook to my receiver and was able to play 5.1 and other stuff with no problems and no fiddling.
Customer Review: One thing to note.... Summary: 4 Stars
Note: Each end of the cable has a clear plastic protective fairing that protects the optical components at the end of the cable which must be removed prior to use. The cables are inexpensive, easy to set up and the recording use I am putting them to produces a clear, clean present sound quality. Excellent.
Recording chain is: fender stratocaster guitar into Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp (Lexicon Vortex and TC Electronic G Sharp in the effects loop) then the recording outs go to the inputs of a Roland VS840EX digital mixer.
The full size SPDIF recording out is where I connect this cable then I connect the mini toslink to the recording input of the iMac Corei7 computer running Snow Leopard. Any digital audio workstation application will work be it Garageband, Logic, etc. A great value and will result in excellent sound versus the analog input.
Customer Review: "You get what you pay for" Summary: 2 Stars
If you buy the cheapest cable, I guess it shouldn't be a surprise when it dies on you sooner than you'd expect, but it still sucks. I used to buy very expensive name-brand cables, but have slowly been going cheaper and cheaper. I've learned for some cables that see a lot of daily wear and tear (think: USB charging cables), it's more cost effective to buy 2 or 3 that are cheaper than a name brand counterpart because they last nearly as long at a fraction of the cost. This particular cable did not see a lot of daily wear and tear, in fact nearly none, yet it failed after about 6 months. I suppose the nice thing about digital cabling is that they either work or don't. There's no in-between. I've since replaced it with a name brand cable that was 3x the cost, I guess we'll see if the next step up was worth it 18 months from now ;)
Customer Review: Long overdue... VOLUME & Clarity Summary: 5 Stars
Using it on my Macbook'07 finally - after a year of scruntin sound! with a Logitech Z55. This makes the world of a difference in volume.
A headphone line-in to the Z55 CANNOT give this system a good signal. You can turn the volume up to max and it will be soft. So iPods jacked in with that little 1/4" or 1/8" whatever headphone?? - uh uh. Optical is optical - unsurpassed. Now I play straight off iTunes on my MacBook in a 12'x12' room and it almost becomes deafening. Clarity and everything else!? WAOW.
Maximum volume now (which is too loud anyway in this room) can cause the speakers to get distorted.
A great speaker system needs to be fed properly - optical - and this little cable works.
