Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PNY Attache 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD8GBATT2-EF (Black/Blue)Customer Review: Affordable, reliable USB flash drive Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a high school student who attends a boarding school. Being a boarder and a student, I needed a USB flash drive that was reliable, adequately fast, and most of all, affordable. When I saw this at a local B. Buy store, I was skeptical at its low price, but I decided to take my chance and try the product. I was amazed! The flash drive was not the fastest in the world (at least compared to some of the higher end products), but the plastic casing wasn't "cheap" at all. Rather, it felt like one of those rugged, sturdier material that are used in making external hard drives. The drive is sleek enough that it does not block other USB from being plugged in next to it.
When I plugged it to my Mac OS X, a small green (yes, green, despite the bluish transparent material) light lit up next to the words, "attache". It ran fine on both my Mac and my Windows XP via using the Bootcamp feature. And while an external hard drive would support only one type of formatting (either NTFS or Mac formatted), the USB PNY used the MS-Dos FAT32, which allowed me to switch between Mac and PC without partitioning or formatting.
Although it is common for a USB this size or even much smaller for to be able to carry 8 gigs, some of my friends and teachers were still impressed at the size of this bad boy. Now I know that the PNY is a good company, I am glad that I bout this USB drive (it was initially on sale). I have been using this drive for over an year, and I had absolutely no problem with it so far, even as my SanDisk U3 kept being corrupted.
I read some of the reports that an internal plastic piece would become lose and break off. Right now, if someone shakes my PNY, it would make a small rattling noise, but it still works mighty fine. The description on the product information says that it has cap holder on the back, but the cap holder is slightly too big for the cap and you would actually worry that the cap would actually fall apart at the plastic seams. I haven't lost my cap yet, thanks to the design of the USB itself. When you push the cap down to protect the connective plug, it literally snaps shut with a click and doesn't fall off in your pocket like some of the other USB with "lose" caps. The keychain hole at the back is kind of too thick for a conventional key ring, not to mention the small key hole. Also, when you are hanging the USB to a keychain, you find it extremely difficult to put the cap at the back during the usage.
Overall, the USB is easy to use. It does not need any programs to be installed (except in Vista, where it takes about thirty seconds to recognize if using it on Vista for the first time), meaning that it is plug and play. It is sturdy and scratch resistance except for the blue part (it turns whitish blue as if paint have been peeled off). Never faced any data corruption, did not break on me, nor did it crack. It is compatible for both Mac and PC without having to format. I strongly recommend this product to anyone.
