Customer Review: Great graphics workstation card but instructions for installing are incomplete.

My wife is a web designer and works extensively in Adobe CS4 web (now using CS5). We purchased a Dell Studio XPS desktop with the Intel Core I7 processor, but most of the XPS machines are gaming-oriented. The original video card was an ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 512 MB of memory - a midrange gaming card at best and not up to the needs of high-end digital graphics work. Dell's power supply for the XPS is a bit anemic as well, at 350 w. After reviewing many options, we picked the NVIDIA Quadro line, and selected the PNY card based on several reviews. The card works as expected and has significantly improved the graphics design performance of the computer.
The sparse instructions made installation a bit challenging. In particular, the kit included a two-wire cable that was not described in the instructions; this is an SPDIF (Sony/Phillips Digital Interface) audio cable that must be connected between the card and the mother board if you want the HDMI interface to carry the audio signal. The SPDIF connections vary among mother boards and usually are either a 5-pin inline connector with one pin missing, or a 6-pin array with one pin missing. They may not be very well labelled on the mother board (as is the case with the XPS), so I spent a lot of time on the web trying to figure out what the cable was and how to hook it up. You will need a good light source and magnifying lens to read the imprints on the mother board.
The card is advertised as having a 3-year warranty. However, you must register online in order to get the full warranty - otherwise it is one year only.
