Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of 4 PORT CABLE TV / HDTV / DIGITAL AMPLIFIER INTERNET MODEM SIGNAL BOOSTER INTERNET AMP

Customer Review: USE ONLY WITH 4 OUTPUTS OR W/ DUMMY LOADS
Summary: 4 Stars

After testing this unit in various ways I came to the following conclusions (my initial impression was wrong & it is below after the ------:

This unit is intended for 4 transmission lines out. (However, someone may buy this & try to use it with only 2 or 3 lines out, leaving one or more outlets open.) If you don't hook up 4 lines out and you don't like the results, try capping the unused outputs with 75 ohm dummy loads (they may be called 75 ohm terminations). These are little screw on caps which pretend to be other antenna lines & TV's.

When I tested this with only one transmission line hooked to it, I found that the amplifier actually attenuated the signal. But when I hooked up 3 lines to it (with TV tuners) the amplifier did amplify. Using the built in signal strength meter with my EyeTV (Mac TV system), the signal strength about doubled or more than doubled.

So, don't test the amplifier with just one out line connected to it. If you want a 1 line amplifier, buy that.

Thus I would change my rating to 4 stars. I would make it 5 stars, but the lack of instructions provided with this amplifier is to blame.

Below are my former conclusions based on testing the unit with only 1 output used.

BELOW ARE FALSE CONCLUSIONS ! ! !

My test below was only with UHF Stations, particularly digital 23 & 39 (which probably means 23.1 & 39.1) & weak analog channel 44.

I bought two of what appears to be these alleged ampfliers. One of them had received a new brand name as Channel Master, which I had thought was a good brand. I attached a large yagi antenna via a coax cable to the input on this "ampflier," 10 foot run. Then I ran two coax cables 50 feet to a TV set-up inside my home. I hooked up a signal strength meter. I compared signal strength with the device turned on & turned off (no power). I could see the TV stations satisfactorily, mostly. But, when I checked the digital signal strength, there was no detectable difference in the signal strength with the "amplier" off or on.

Then I tuned to a weak analog TV station, which still is in operation. With the amplier on, the signal was very poor, snow like. With the amplier off, the signal was viewable.

Conclusion:
This device is a signal attenuator, not an amplifier at all. I am perplexed at all the 5 star ratings. I wonder if the reviewers compared the on vs. the off signal.

I returned the 2nd device & Amazon.com gave me a quick refund & return label. I had bough the 2nd one, thinking that maybe the first one was just a lemon (but I had had it too long too return). But both devices acted the same, as signal attenuators, not amplifiers.

Another point: with digital stations, I seem to get just as good pictures with a rabbit-ear-&-loop, indoor powered antenna, as with a sooper-dooper outside antenna. And I have a home with steel siding. I think that the transmitting antennas in my city are about 20 miles from my home, located on a hill.

I have to wonder if these so-called amplifiers were made for some different application other than amplifying UHF. I have not tested them with VHF nor with even higher frequencies than those UHF channels I tested.

Description of 4 PORT CABLE TV / HDTV / DIGITAL AMPLIFIER INTERNET MODEM SIGNAL BOOSTER INTERNET AMP

This is a brand new, four (4) port cable television drop amplifier, just like the ones that your local cable company uses to correct their system's shortcomings. This new model packs a powerful punch in a compact, easy-to-install package! By connecting these fantastic signal boosters to the drop cable coming in from the street, you can increase the signal strength entering your home by up a whopping +7 db per port! If you have multiple televisions or run a cable modem for your internet, this product is recommended. By having four ports come directly off of the amplifier, there is no need for additional splitters, which reduce signal strength. If you are tired of tv pictures that don't seem as clear as they should be, dropped internet connections, or just desire a reliable amplifier to give continuous, steady signal to your home or business, this is for you!
