Customer Review: I Had Problems But Got It To Work, Please Read......
Summary: 5 Stars

I had problem like other reviewers about not getting signal on some or all channels and I had found the culprit. It seems like the signal was too strong and overloaded the tv, perhaps that I only live twenty miles from transmission towers. I have a 26" samsung tube widescreen with HD tuner built-in and the picture went white. I then went to the feature to see how strong the signal is and it flashes alternately 0 bar to 9 bars every other seconds. Not until after some trials and errors, I found out it was the POWER SUPPLY UNIT. I went out to a local home depot and bought a Leviton Video Amplifier Module 48210, came back and hooked it up and it worked perfectly. I used the Leviton instead of the power supply unit that came with the channel master 7777. Apparently, the mast mount pre-amp uses the power from the Leviton also so that worked out well.

This unit has a passive or inline power supply. If you're not familiar with the term, it doesn't use the conventional male or female 3.5mm jack like most of your electronic gadgets. The power supply unit has a 120 volt 2-prong polarized non-grounding plug at the end of a white plastic coated 18 gauge pair of wires that plugs to your wall receptacle or surge protector. It has 2 coax jacks, one labeled "To TV" and the other "From Antenna". The system works by using the coax cable braided shield for power and the center electrode for signal. I simply just swapped out the included power supply and use the Leviton instead.

I have an old fish-bone type roof-top antenna with the main skeleton part about 6 feet or 72" so it wasn't that big. My house has an attached garage and its roof is lower than the house so the antenna was attached to the side end of the house on top of the roof of the garage. Instead of mounting the pre-amp directly to the mast or pole of the antenna, I was able to install it inside the attic to keep it away from the weather. I attached a 300ohm to 75ohm outdoor transformer (bought from Lowe's) to the antenna, that to the coaxial cable to the input of the pre-amp, another coaxial cable from the output of the pre-amp to the input of the Leviton, and the output of the Leviton to the tv. I make my own coaxial cable from bulk RG6 quad shield. I caulked the rubber boot of the transformer and wall bushing with windows & doors clear silicone II to keep the precipitation out. I can't believe I get 8 to maximum of 9 bars on every local stations. You can go to antennaweb dot org and click on "choose an antenna" then enter your address to find the stations in your area. Just ignore what they say about different color coded antenna to receive certain stations. Don't get suckered into buying another roof-top antenna designed for hdtv. If you already have one, that's all you need. Make sure you point the TAIL END toward the general direction of the towers in your area from the earlier said website. I guarantee if you follow my directions, you should get nearly perfect signal on all local stations, even in extreme weather. I went from 1 or 2 bars using the old flat 300ohm wire that stop working during the rain to 9 bars on 90% of the stations and 8 bars on the rest of the others. A few goes down to 7 bars intermittently but anything over 4 bars is completely stable. I even get more stations than indicated on antenna web site.

To summarize it, the Channel Master 7777 and Leviton 48210 are a perfect mate. At $35, you get what you paid for. I've used some cheaper brands like RCA, GE, Philips, and no name brand bought on ebay and they didn't work as well. They're better than nothing, but the amplification on the low to medium frequency stations is mediocre and the amplification on high frequency stations like 68.1, 68.2, 68.3, 68.4 is non existence.

Just a note, I installed an inline coaxial surge protector with ground wire connection between the 300ohm to 75ohm transformer and the pre-amp. I don't know if the building or electrical code required it to be grounded but I just did it just in case. Mine has a hole just big enough for a single 6 awg green stranded copper wire. My house has pier and beam foundation and the studs are exposed so I was able to run the ground wire from the attic to the cold water pipe under the house. If you have slab foundation, I guess you'll have to run wire down the outside of the house to a grounding electrode or somehow ground it to the ground wire of your house's electrical system. Even with older pier and beam houses like mine, you can't just drill a hole from the attic and another hole under the house and expect to be able to feed it through behind the sheetrock, assuming you don't have exposed studs. There is a fire-barrier on every wall, interior and exterior wall. It's just a horizontal piece of stud between the vertical studs exactly 4 feet off the floor if you have an 8 feet ceiling. Unless you have a really long drill bit designed for this type of work and clearance in the attic for you to work with, it's impossible to feed it from top to bottom.

Description of PCT International CM7777 Titan 2 Signal Amplifier

The Channel Master CM 7777 is a high gain, low noise preamplifier used for weak signal areas to allow a weak signal that is present at the antenna to be amplified to a viewable strength. This TV antenna preamplifier works best for persons in weak signal areas and is subject to overdrive if used in areas with fairly strong signals. In stronger signal areas our medium gain preamplifier, the CM 7778 is a better choice.
