Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of PBL BACKGROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM 9'x15' BLACK WHITE MUSLINS by PBL

Customer Review: Good for the money, beware of shipping problems
Summary: 3 Stars

First off, for the money, this backdrop kit is great. Be careful not to over-tighten anything or the delicate plastic connectors will break. Love that it comes with a case which holds the stands - note that the case does not hold the backdrops. Backdrops are of decent quality however when I originally ordered this, only one black muslin cloth arrived with the stands. I contacted the seller and was shipped the missing white one - but at the wrong size - they sent a 10' x 12' instead of the 9' x 15' that was advertised. In order to have it exchanged they wanted me to pay to ship back the wrong one which once received, they would ship the correct size. Since I had already paid $17 to ship the original order, and Cowboy Studio itself had made the error in shipping not once, but twice - I didn't feel that was fair and was concerned that again they might send the wrong product. While they do sell decent photography/video lighting items cheap, be warned that their quality control in the shipping department is not up to par with Amazon standards and you may either end up with the wrong item or missing items. Other reviews of similar products state the same problems as well as their rating on Amazon. They will expect you to pay to ship items back even if shipping problems were on their end. So either budget in additional shipping charges or live with what they send you. A claim to Amazon did nothing but get the seller to agree to refund me once I paid to ship the entire kit back. As I stated, I liked the kit just wanted the correct size backdrop. Also compare selling and shipping prices on their own website with the same items they are selling on Amazon - they are not the same.

Customer Review: Solid Backdrop
Summary: 5 Stars

This backdrop is very easy to set up even though it comes with no instructions. The support system is solid. But there are a couple of things to be aware of. The bottom sections of the vertical poles are spring loaded. The poles tend to jump up when you release them so make sure that you don't have anything that you don't want poked over the poles when they are released. Also, I wasn't sure how to use the two clamps that hold the muslins to the frame. They don't seem to attach to the frame. So, I draped the muslin over the horizontal frame pole and clamped the front and rear muslin parts together. I don't know if that is how it is supposed to be done, but it works.

The muslin is creased from being folded in its bag. The creases are very obvious when the muslin is hanging on the frame. I was photographing dark objects in front of the white screen so I masked out the screen with a wand mask tool to get rid of the creases in my photos. But if you are shooting mid-range objects, you may have to do some manual masking to get rid of the creases or figure out a way to stretch the muslin to reduce the creases.

Customer Review: Decent, but...
Summary: 3 Stars

The light stand itself is sturdy and compact. fits right into my car trunk with the handy bag that comes with it. The only problem i experienced with the stand is that when trying to put together one side of the three piece pole on the top, it is hard to get it to jam together. the other side connects together easily. The muslin itself is the real issue. I wish there was some mechanism to have it easily draped onto the stand. You have to buy some nice clamps to keep this on and looking smooth. The backdrop is also not wide enough. sure, the stand is 15' wide, but the muslin isn't close to being that wide. Also, this doenst come with anything to store the muslins in. I keep it in the cardboard box it came in. So unless you can Photoshop pretty decently to take out rinkles, make it look wider and make the muslin's black look blacker and white look whiter, go with some paper backdrop for the excellent stand. At least I can Photoshop, but some others can't or don't want to go through the hassle and waste precious time.

Customer Review: Perfect! Great Price!
Summary: 5 Stars

Overall: Great Product! Impressed!

I researched a lot on the backdrop kits and finally decided on this one from Cowboy Studio (9x15 White Black). I was conerned with the reviews that mentioned the muslin is very thin. Yes it is thin but however I see no issues with it. I have taken over 100 photos now with both black and white and have had no issues with seeing through the fabric. The stands seem to work perfect for what you need. Also the fabrics come with a stitched in loop so that you don't need to purchase clamps! Very nice! For the price and quality of this kit I am very pleased. The carrying case is nice also!

Pros:
Large size muslins can easily fit multiple people
Fairly sturdy stands with nice case
Cheap!
Quality

Note: This kit setup is LARGE! It will not fit in small room I have mine installed in basement.

Customer Review: Good 4 Home Studio
Summary: 4 Stars

I've used this backdrop system twice now - once at an adult birthday party and a couple of days ago at our Christmas Eve party.

Highs - very portable, nice size, good price

Lows - thin muslins, no clamps provided

For individual or small group portraits, this will work well - especially if you need to be mobile. For large groups (over 7 people), you may see the stands on either end. Build construction is decent, but anything more would add weight and make it less portable. The pole that the muslin slides over has rough edges and I'm concerned about tearing the thin material. I will smooth them with sandpaper. The muslins are rather thin and the white one will show any colored wall behind it. If you're taking 3/4 or head shots, you can double it. I need to find some clamps to keep the muslin straight and prevent wrinkles when needed. For the most part, I find they add character to the background.
