Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Palm Z22 HandheldCustomer Review: Screen Display poor on the eyes Summary: 2 Stars
I decided to go with the Z22 after reading these reviews and to replace my monocromatic Palm V. I wanted something that was within $100, able to handle all the lists, tasks and ical content but in color. The Z22 seemed to fit that bill and the specs seemed pretty impressive compared to my current Palm V. However, I was very dissapointed with both the screen size and display resolution. Don't get me wrong, the color is an improvement and certainly aids in color coded organization but the major problem is the way this device displays it's pixels information. I work in the Computer Animation field, so I know a whole lot about how LCD and CRT displays work. This product's display is poorly manufactured. There are pixel scanline issues (for a lack of a better description) with this model that make your eyes tired at the onset. If you look at the default photo #2, you will immediately see what I am talking about. There are these rows of moving pixels that are very bad for your eyesight ( and could cause headaches). You will not notice it on the menu bars until you adjust the contrast settings.I called support and after finally convincing them to pick up the darn pda and look for themselves, they admitted to seeing the same moving pixels. They said to return it as a defect but how can it be a defect if they see it themselves? Anyhow, I love Palm but if you are going to use this product on a daily basis, then I would highly recommend going with a better model until they improve this model. One star for a major blunder in their display technology and add a star because everything else works properly and because I like Palm.
UPDATE: I have since purchased the Palm Tungsten E2 Handheld. This is FAR superior than the Z22 and although it's almost twice the price, you won't be dissapointed. You buy cheap, you get cheap. Your Z22 won't last while the E2 will.
Customer Review: Simple, perfect pda Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using my Z22 for a little over a month now, and wonder how did I survive without it? As other reviewers mentioned, if your in the market for something with a million different functions, look for something else. This is a pda, not a pocket sized personal computer.
What I love about the Z22 is it's simplicity. For someone like me, looking for something to keep track of client appointments, special dates, contacts, and other random information, this is great, and easy to use. I have only refered to the manual a few times for more technical information. Right out of the box, it was easy to navigate and input data.
Another great thing is that although, yes, there isn't a ton of memory space, you can still do a lot of different things such as opening word, excel, publisher, etc documents on it (after installing QuickOffice). I use it to edit and save excel sheets all the time. Much easier than carrying a laptop around everytime I need to update something! Also, it will read e-books, and after installing splashshopper, you can use it to keep track of grocery lists, wine lists, book lists, etc. This is great for me because upon thinking of something I need at the store or hearing of a wine I need to try, all I have to do is turn it on, write it in, and I'm done. No more forgetting little tidbits during the day. With splashshopper you can make your own lists too, so I have to-do lists for work to help keep me organized daily on what I need to do.
All over, I love my z22. Its functional, easy, and not bogged down with a lot of features I don't need, like mp3 players, wireless bluetooth, and whatnot. It keeps me organized without keeping me distracted. I would suggest this to anyone who's tired of writing notes on random pieces of paper, and carrying around a bulky paper organizer. Great product at a great price.
Customer Review: Great Basic PDA Summary: 4 Stars
If you want a PDA that's really just a PDA, this is it.
I'm a stay at home mom to two kids with special medical needs. I'm always making appointments on the run, running late leaving playgroups, or trying desperately to remember my errands or shopping list.
This PDA has helped me to be on time more often. Even more importantly, I have to make fewer rescheduling calls because I double scheduled us...again. The Z22 keeps track of our recurring appointments too. The only complaint I might have is that it isn't super easy to change when you get reminded about something after a reminder has popped up. I like a remainder a few days ahead, then one day, then a few hours before, then 15 mins, then when it's time to go. This isn't easy to manage on this device without changing it each and every time. I have the same complaint about Outlook, so the Z22 is in good company.
The Z22 also has a great grocery list program (from the CD). I love the grocery list feature because it keeps track of prices too. I know before I get to the store how close to my budget I am going to be!
I can also keep a few photos. This is great for those few times I manage a few minutes away from the kids, since I always want to show off a few pictures of them! Only complaint on that is that I'd love a better resolution, but for the price, the picture feature works well enough.
The notepad has been great. I can keep track of directions to where I'm going, or even a take out order. My husband has discovered it's a great way to leave me a love note, and even better for requesting movies that aren't chick flicks. He gets to avoid the sighing and rolling of my eyes, and I get to avoid the "I'm a man and I like man movies" speech.
I haven't used any of the other items this PDA offers, but those I use, I use regularly.
Customer Review: Great PDA, but watch out for false advertising! Not all software stated on the box is included! Summary: 4 Stars
This is my 3rd PDA in 8 years (I am always wanting the newest features). I do not need it for business, only personal use, so the Z22 is perfect for me. It is very easy and simple to install and use, even for a non-techie like me. I love the color coding system on the calendar and the contact list is so much better organized than my Visor was.
I have a very big gripe. When I purchased my z22, I was mislead into believing that SplashShopper was included in the $99 price. SplashShopper is a fabulous program that lets you keep all sorts of list (I am a major list keeper, and always have lists all over my house, purse and car of things I need from Cosco, or the grocery or books I want to read or all the sizes of my family members, etc.). Splash Shopper organizes all of that info. in the fastest, most accessable way I have ever seen. It states on the Z22 bos AND in all Z22 advertising, that SplashShopper is INCLUDED (check in out on this website). I was so excited to download it and get started. I soon discovered, the only thing included in the original purchase price is a 30 day free trial! I will have to purchase SplashShopper for $30. No where does it say this program it costs extra. I contacted Palm about this problem. I asked for a $30 reimbursment or a $30 credit in a Palm store. They refused both requests AFTER admitting I was correct in my statments. They told me that I could have returned my Z22, when I found out SplashShopper was not included. That was their solution! What the did was false advertising. The old "bait and switch".
I will next speak to the legal dept., but am thinking I will have to report this to the FTC, or some Consumer Advocacy group. It is not about the lousy $30 anymore, but I hate when huge corporations think they can take advantage of their loyal customer base.
Customer Review: Continuing Problems... Summary: 1 Stars
The z22 is the third model of Palm that I have owned. And at this point, I think it's time to look for a different product.
My first Palm was an M105 which worked great for what it was. Eventually it became obsolete and I decided to replace it with a Tungsten E2. The first one worked for about a month before It refused to turn on again. The second one worked until I cracked the screen carrying it in my book bag to school. They wanted more to fix the screen than it would cost to replace it. So I went back to the old reliable m105.
A couple months ago I decided to get a newer version and went with the Z22 because it had all of the features that I actually used on my palmpilot, and none of the junk that I didn't.
Almost immediately I would have the palm randomly power down and would not turn back on unless I hit the reset button on the back. After only a couple of weeks even that would not work, and the unit would not turn on at all. I took it to the store and they replaced the unit.
Then I replaced my computer, which now runs Windows Vista. There are no drivers for the palm on Vista, and As of the last time I checked a couple weeks ago, there still has not been a driver update. This means I cannot hotsync my palm, and I'm at risk of losing my data.
The second unit also began having the same power down problems. Sometimes when I slide the stylus into the unit, it shuts off and will not turn back on until I hit the reset button. I believe that this is because the slot for the stylus is completely open to the delicate electronics inside, and sliding the stylus in at even a slight angle can damage the electronics. At any rate, this one has now also stopped being able to be reset. I will be taking it to the store and asking for my money back.
