Customer Review: replaces scrap pieces of paper and post-its
Summary: 4 Stars

Great for moms who are tired of using and wasting paper. It's small and fits in my purse next to my cell phone. I don't have fly-away post-its in the car to remind me of the errands I need to run. It's all in my Tasks list. I don't have to worry about remembering to transfer dates from Outlook on my pc into a paper pocket calendar, which I always forgot to do. I can make follow-up appointments or any other plans immediately because I've got my updated calendar in hand. I can write quick notes in the Notepad when comparison shopping from store to store, can jot down quick phone numbers, etc with the Notes feature. No more jotting numbers down wherever and then losing that piece of paper.

The SplashShopper trial version that came with mine was something that I ended up purchasing. I can put in my grocery list, by store, and enter sale prices that I'm looking for, easily on the computer to download onto the PDA. It's flexible enough to use for creating Christmas lists, clothes and shoes reference lists to always have your family's info at hand, trip packing lists...very versatile.

If I didn't have a PC, it might be cumbersome at first to do some of these things by typing them or writing them into the PDA directly. Downloading is the way to go for me. I did have to fiddle with some things to get it to work with Vista when I got my new laptop. It does sync with Outlook, which I like better than Palm Desktop, but there are glitches. It'll sometimes duplicate certain entries. My contacts list got a little weird when I went to Vista from XP. I'm not sure that's related. And you won't get your Notes entries(where you can write directly on the screen with the stylus) in Outlook like you can in the Palm Desktop. I also had issues with the pda freezing when it's battery ran out completely. I figured out that it was because everything was set to an alarm that must have been constantly triggering. I don't use the alarm anymore except for those rare things that I really, really can't forget and I turned the sound off. That has really kept the battery life going forever. And if it does freeze, a recharge and hitting the reset button will get it going again. I'm so happy that I got it. This is a great gadget for people who like to stay organized and want a simple, fairly inexpensive, electronic way to do it.

Customer Review: some hints for usage and the good and bad
Summary: 4 Stars

Ok, so I am veteran PalmPilot user, from the Pro to the m500 and now this one.

I'll make a few general comments here and then some specifics:
(1) Why buy a palmpilot?
Well, if you can, you probably want to do a smartphone instead (e.g. Treo). But if you don't want to do the smartphone, the palmpilot is a great way to stay organized and on top of things
(2) Why not just use a laptop?
The palmpilot is small, light, and it turns on... immediately.

The good and the bad of the Z22:
GOOD:
(1) very light and small - this is a great feature.
(2) Also, does seem relatively tough so far.
(3) very nice screen

BAD:
(1) the palm desktop software is sorely in need of updating. What are these guys thinking? The basic apps seem the same as 6 years ago, and that's not ok. In particular - warning - the desktop software has an "unchangeable" font. So if you have a modern laptop/computer, you won't be happy. - but this is not a killer for this product (see below).
(2) It is not clear if there is any keyboard that works with it - wake up, Palm. Most people really dislike Graffiti text entry. I tolerate it, but would buy a keyboard. And because the Palm Desktop is so outdated, the keyboard is even more useful.

HINTS ON USAGE:
(1) If you are going to enter text, just buy a software text replacement immediately - like Mobilewrite or TealScript. The Graffiti 2 system is terrible; Graffiti 1 is much faster and accurate. These pieces of software will allow usage of Graffiti 1.
(2) If you are managing any significant number of projects (including just your personal projects like books to read), then just buy a replacement for the Todo list application. I like Natara Bonsai; but Shadowplan also looks very good. The great thing about these is that they have a very nice desktop application - so you can do everything on the desktop comfortably. I've been using Bonsai for years.
(3) a case is important. A cheap digital camera case will easily fit the palm - and has great padding.

So 4 stars?
This is a godsend for tracking complicated information and getting things done. I just wish I had bought it about 9 months ago, when I embarked on a long complicated project. I'm happy to have it now.

Customer Review: A very easy to use product which is well worth the price!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using the palm z22 for a week now and it is awesome! If you aren't looking for a cell phone bluetooth enabled mp3 player movie watcher web browser emailer instant messenger thingamajig, just a faithful well made organizer(with awesum bonus features I might add) then this is for you. The first thing I noticed about it is how easy it is to use! You can keep all life's details in this handheld and it STAYS there! Also type in all of your friends phone numbers in contacts and even add their birthday! There are various alarms that you can set for any event to remind you of them and you only have to enter events that repeat once. For example I have a piano lesson every thurday at 4 so I just type it once and hit repeat once a week and it appears every week until the stop date! This is also the perfect device for teachers that have to keep track of their students with homework and everything. And obviously it's great for the student! Easily keep track of ALL your assignments and due dates(in task mode and memos)and you'll be able to get them done on time(I know from experience). It is so small and light that it feels like a wallet in your pocket.Outside it looks like an ipod almost. The screen is the perfect size for all the applications like reading books, news, and scheduling your life. You can easily jot down a quick note with Graffiti 2 handwriting recognition, or use the onscreen keyboard to enter information. The included cd rom includes cool bonus software that really are useful.Such as a shopping list, mobile db which is a database of all kinds of stuff, ebook reader if you want to read books, chess for those boring hours, checksplit, a first aid guide, a calculator, and LOTS of other stuff.Hot syncing it to your computer is so easy! Just plug it in and hit hot sync and all your dates, appointments, memos, notes and whatever are stored on your computer so you don't lose them. The battery lasts surprisingly long. I haven't had to charge it in a week since I got it! It would be nice if it had a custom made aluminum case, but the polycarbonate air case works just great and protects it from scratches and stuff, so make sure you invest in one.Overall this is a very attractive looking and well made handheld. If you are thinking of buying this, then think NO MORE! This is the handheld for you!

Customer Review: Nice for the Price
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using the z22 for a few days and have found it to be a great product for anyone not concerned with wireless, a large handheld display screen or extended memory. I've used palms for several years and keep a lot of technical notes in the Palm memo app for use when I'm in remote locations doing system adminstration work. My previous palm was a III xe - it was trailing edge technology but very durable and useful as long as I could find a synching machine that still had a serial connection.

The install for the z22 was easy and worked flawlessly. I tried the install via the usb port on Macintosh System X and Windows XP formats. The installation program pulled all my old palm info into the Z22; memos, contacts, calendar and task functions were all maintained in the upgrade. Some of the older applications were not compatible with the Palm 5 OS on the z22. Most of the problems apps were old games that I was not that concerned about.

For under $100 dollars, I'm very impressed with the following;

1) colors are bright and reading the screen is easy in light or dark settings.
2) I currently have 17.5 mbytes memory left on the z22 after the upgrade. In the PC world, this is very little memory, but for a Palm environment this is a lot of entries. If I was concerned about using mp3's, video, doc, or Excel files on a palm format, I would consider another device.
3) The battery lasts a long time. I once used a Palm M515 color palm and it needed recharged a lot more than the Z22 does. The advertised time of 8 hours between charges is probably accurate.
4) The size and weight of this device is very light - it is not much bigger than my pager and fits very comfortably in a pocket.

The only problem I've had with the Z22 is that when I use it with a Taurus wireless keyboard, the response is somewhat slow and delayed. Also, the 160X160 screen size might be of concern to some people, but I find it to be very readable with bi-focally challenged eyes.

Is there anything really innovative about this device? Not really. But I think Palm did a great job of combining the right features into an entry level color organizer for a double diget price.

Customer Review: Great handheld
Summary: 4 Stars

I wanted a hand-held to coordinate my schedule between two offices and when I am out of the office for meetings. This is an affordable entry into Palm-land. I almost didn't buy it because they are clearly marketing it as the "MomPilot". But I did and am glad for it. It doesn't coordinate perfectly with my Outlook calendar at work. I wish that there was a way for the device and the desktop to realize that a change in one place should be changed (not duplicated) in another. For example, if I change the time for a meeting on the palm, when I sync it with the desktop I end up with the old appointment and the new one as separate events in both places. However, that probably happens with any scheduler. I also had to set my preferences so that the PC trupms the palm for scheduling if there is a conflict. For a while I was ending up with 2-3 of everything (like "lunch" and other standing meetings) becuase the palm was getting copied to the PC and vice versa. Another down side is that it is not expandable, but for my purposes that is just fine. It keeps my schedule, notes, contacts and pictures with plenty of space.

It comes with lots of uselsess sample software that I wish it didn't. SplashShopper looks good on paper but is hard to customize and the lists are clearly gender biased. The grocerey list is ridiculous (has lobster, wine and shaving cream but no baby things, conditioner, or tampons) and the packing/travel list is frankly sexist -- it had ties, trousers, and jacket pre-listed but not bras, skirts, cosmetics, etc. I'll probably end up deleting Spalshshopper all together. Too bad, because it could have been really useful if it had not been designed for a 1960's era batchelor!

In general, the z22 is lightweight, easy to use, easy to sync and the battery lasts FOREVER! I've had it for 3 months and I think I've charged it twice for longer than a few hours. I don't use it constantly, but I have been impressed with the battery life.

I also got the brown nubuck zip case which has been nice. It is well protected and you can put in money, cards, etc.

All in all a good purchase but be selective in what you download to it when you set it up the first time.
