Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Palm Z22 HandheldCustomer Review: This handy little handheld does everything you need in style Summary: 5 Stars
When I reached the point where no paper planner could fit all my tasks, I turned to digital alternatives. As the other reviews have said, the z22 does exactly what you need it to and it does it well. If you're looking for something to make your life easier and more manageable without all the bells and whistles, this is it.
The palm z22 is lightweight and small enough to take everywhere with you. As a journalist, I make lots of contacts and need space to store their phone numbers, e-mails, and info about where I met them, what they have expertise in. The z22 has 8 separate sections to store custom information, and all your data can be entered into the handheld or your computer and synced up easily and rapidly. It's a fast, classy and intuitive alternative to buying a giant paper planner every year, and it makes life so much easier.
As for cases to protect your new-found assistant: Don't get the air case, the metal case, or the flexi case. The air case either opens too easily or not easily enough, the flexi case doesn't protect the palm's screen, and the metal case gets scratched up and opens on the left side (which is awkward for a right-handed or small-handed person). Plus, none of them protect the charger port on the palm. I found a case by Timbuk2 called the 2way that holds my palm PERFECTLY. It's made from ballistic fabric, has room for cards and straps to a backpack or purse strap. It's lightweight and secures with velcro. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to protect their palm in style without paying a lot or getting a case not made for the z22 that doesn't fit.

Customer Review: SUCKS if you're a mac user Summary: 2 Stars
Right out of the box, I did what the inscructions told me to. I charged up my Z22, and installed hotsync on my mac. I learned very quickly that Palm's hotsync software is HORRIBLE, and expected me to transfer all my contacts and calendar info to it. Why would I do that when I've already got it all set up in Address Book and iCal? So I found out it is actually possible to use iSync with this device, but there are still problems.
All my contacts transfer fine, all my to-dos also transfer without a problem. But for some reason, it will not properly sync my damn calendar! I cannot describe to you how angry it's making me, because that's what I bought it for in the first place! Even though I have iSync set up so it should sync ALL calendars - palm apparently only wants to sync with the ones it likes, which appear to be my birthday calendars, and that's it. And it keeps adding an "unfiled" category to iCal which is also really annoying.
If you have a mac, DON'T BUY IT.
Also, Palm makes a big deal about this device having a color screen and able to display pictures, but the image quality is not much greater than your average cell phone.
I just synced it again right now, it said it made 23 changes to the device - BUT THERE'S STILL NOTHING ON THE CALENDAR.
Palm - this device sucks. I hope your company blows into smithereens.
I mean, I just don't get it. It syncs ONLY the birthday cal - why just that one? WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?!
Someone please contact me if you've figured out how to get this POS to work with your Mac: dennisbdc@gmail.com
Customer Review: Looks like it would be mac-like, but isn't Summary: 1 Stars
I bought a Palm Z22 for use with an iBook running OSX 10.4. All the reviews, features, information that I saw mentioned that it works great with macs.
It turned out not to be the case. I got all of my contacts showing up on the z22. I browsed through them, and I saw that a friend of mine didn't have her birthday filled out. So, I put it in and synced it. The info did not make it back to my mac. For a different person on the mac, I entered their birthday on the mac and synced again. The info did not make it over to the z22.
Then I noticed that one of my contacts had the home address listed as a work address on the z22. Oops, I thought, I need to change that, so I went into the abook on the mac. It was correct there, it just didn't copy it to the z22 correctly.
I go to palm's support site under mac syncing, and do a search for birthday, and nothing comes up (actually, if you include archives, you will see someone had this problem over a year ago with a mac syncing to a palm). I notice there are a bunch of questions there, but no answers.
After a little more searching, I find that there is a company out there called markspace that sells software that is supposed to make these things work. I haven't tried it yet, because it costs $40 and I'm not sure I want to pay for functionality that should have been included with the pda.
So, if you are going to buy a palm device to work with your mac, be prepared for it to not work completely, or to pay an extra $40 to possibly get it to work completely.
Customer Review: nursing student Summary: 4 Stars
I am a nursing student and found the Z22 to be just right for me. I decided on this model because of the price, but now I realize there are other factors I never considered that are more important. The size of this unit is key. In a clinical setting smaller is better, as you may have 10 different things in your pockets. I have found that I may be the only student (out of ten that use PDA's) that carries one around everywhere. When asked why the others don't, they all replied, "too bulky and heavy." Secondly, with the money I saved on the Z22 I was able to load it up with the best nursing program I could find. My classmates spent so much on their lifedrives that there was nothing left in the penny jar for programs, and the free ones are just adequate. Lastly, it is simple, like my Mac that it works with. I do not need all the bells and whistles of a complex handheld device. I am distracted enough as it is without having 24 hour access to the internet or mp3's. Set up was straight forward and quick. Battery life is great, I just charge it up once or twice a week while I am on my computer doing other tasks and it lasts just fine. I am not going to give it 5 stars for the same reason many others don't: memory size. Palm shortchanged this unit bigtime. I don't even care that they left out the expansion slot, they just did not put in enough to start with. If the next generation comes out tomorrow with a gig, I would buy it on the spot. Untill that happens, or untill Apple produces something like it, I will be happy with what I have.
Customer Review: Wow! Easy Transition from Paper to PDA. Summary: 5 Stars
I have been thinking about moving from my little slips of paper to a PDA for awhile. I thought it would be too complicated to store everything on this teeny little device when I can't even figure out how to use my husband's Ipod.
Recently, however, I've noticed how hard it is to keep myself organized with 2 toddlers running around.
Day after day, my husband and I would say, "What was it I needed to pick up again?" because we couldn't remember and couldn't find the right slips of paper.
When I found myself doodling on my hand like I did in high school, I decided it was time for a change.
I did some investigation on the internet to see what would be the easiest transition from paper to PDA, and time and time again I found the Z22. Basically all I was looking for was a place to store my contacts, and my appointments, and also wanted a place I could create lists on my computer without having to print them off when I shop.
The Z22 also stores pictures, which is really a neat feature (though, I'll be honest, the quality of the images has alot to be desired).
It was under $100, and has everything I need, and if there's something else I need, I can just get the software for it. I've entered all my contacts in with cutesy little pictures next to their names, I enter all of my appointments in with ease, and anything I need to get done by a deadline can be placed on a task list that I'll see on the home screen.
I can't recommend this device enough!!
