Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Palm Z22 HandheldCustomer Review: Outstanding pocket organizer. Summary: 5 Stars
I've heard a lot of flak directed towards the z22 for a lot of silly reasons like the low-res screen and lack of certain features that more expensive models have, but that's pretty much the POINT of the z22. It offers all the power of basic organizer/scheduler features without all of the pointless bells and whistles of Mp3 playback and mega-games playing capability and removable storage and all of that.
I want an organizer. And that's precisely what I got. This thing is seriously powerful. Not only is it easy to use and very intuitive, but the Desktop software is also just as clean and easy to use. Additionally, you can add software to it for more specific functions if you need it (like scientific calculators or more advanced financial trackers, even the ability to get RSS feeds off of your computer and read them later).
So, believe the hype...if all you're looking for is a very basic (but very powerful and flexible) schedule/organzier to save you the hassle of notebooks and scraps of paper tucked into wallets, THIS is the answer. No, it doesn't do fancy graphics or sound or wireless internet, but there are many, many people who don't want or need all of that.
If I had any gripes it would only be that the initial CD-ROM installation of the software didn't install the Photo sync software without me manually going to look for it and install it. There were also 3 other programs on the CD-ROM it didn't install without me doing the same.
Apart from that, no complaints....it works wonderfully. And the people who are getting fatal errors and/or crashing their Z22s are doing something wrong that is causing it; this is not manufacturer error and should not be mentioned here.
Customer Review: Pleasant Surprise - Good ebook reader Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product 8 months back.
Operating System:
I use this product on both Windows XP and Mac OS X Leopard. [...]
Use:
I bought this for its PDA functions. However, I now use this to do two things:
1. Create list of stuff when I go shopping.
2. Read eBooks in text format.
3. Scribble some pictures when I am bored :)
My phone pretty much does the rest of the things and does them well.
Charge/Life:
I have read several reviews about this coming dead in the package. I fortunately, had no issues. I just make sure that this is never completely discharged. As soon as it shows low charge, I immediately charge it through the USB port. Each charge lasts 4-5 days depending on the usage.
Connectivity:
I believe the lack of Bluetooth or WiFi is a boon. It's just two less things to distract you! :)
Storing images:
It can store and display images in very low resolution (160x160 pixels). So don't buy this if it's the primary reason you are going for this.
Other Info:
Most of the rest of the features are OK. The software that comes with the device (for PC/Mac) for contacts, appointments etc shows age. (Looks like typical 90s software).
The device itself never crashed and has been VERY stable.
Hope this helps! :)
---- Update Oct 29, 2010 ----
Just wanted to update that the device is still working great.
In spite of having an iPhone, iPod Touch etc, I still find this device very useful (and less distracting).
I just hope (HP) Palm will release a similar device with the new WebOS.
Customer Review: Best (no-frills) PDA ever Summary: 5 Stars
Rarely does a product live up to its promises. Z22 does not promise great connectivity features like web browsing or e-mail access. Nor does it promise memory expansion to hold your photo collections. It is not a phone and you cannot listen to music on it.
Z22 promises to bring order into your otherwise chaotic life. Simple. Sincere. And it does so with finesse. It has all the standard applications that you would expect in a PDA - Tasks, Memos, Notepad, Calender, Address Book etc. Quite an impressive feature list for the sub-100 price (I got it for $90). Your data would not be lost in case you forget to charge the device. Also, you can backup your data with the included Palm desktop software. The 32 megs of memory would be sufficient for most people.
I have been using Z22 for almost 7 months now. This is my first PDA and I am in love with it. Before buying, I was tempted to go for the all-in-one devices that claim to do every thing for you - play mp3s, browse internet, read office documents, wash your car etc. But I decided to go for Z22 since I needed a PDA and not a multimedia device. I certainly do not regret this decision. I carry Z22 around in my pocket all the time thanks to its sleek and lightweight design. The performance of the device has been completely hassle-free. I use the Tasks, Memos and Notepad apps quite a lot. Despite that, I need to recharge the battery only once in 8-10 days. The e-book reader comes handy on those boring flights. People like me might find Graffiti2 a bit difficult to get used to. So I invested in mobilewrite application so that I can just scribble away.
Z22 is a true-blue PDA - you pay for what you want.
Customer Review: Very Affordable Summary: 4 Stars
I am an original owner of a USR Palm Pilot Professional. I paid $300 for it. The bad news is that I rarely use it at all. The reason is that the Pilot is not a pocket computer like my Sharp PC-1350. So, it has been collecting dust like any other gadgets in my house. I already have alot of expensive paper weights. So, what make me buy the Z22 is primary the price and the use of flash memory in this unit. I can finally store all my phone numbers in this Palm without worrying that my numbers will be gone when the battery runs out (I hope). Another thing I like the Z22 is the size and the shape. It is a perfect size for my pocket. The screen is kinda "sink" into the case. So, the screen is kinda protected inside my pocket. The screen is smaller than the other models but it is bright. I am so surprised that I can read the screen so clearly. Another thing I am surprised is that it comes with a database program called Mobile DB. It comes with alot of different ready-made databases. This is the most useful program for the Z22 beside the games I download from the web.
To sum it up why the Z22 is not another gadget:
1) Price
2) Size
3) Useful Database Program
What make it only 4 stars:
1) The Palm Desktop won't work well with Windows NT/2000 or XP Professional (must be admin to use it. good luck if you want to use it in your office)
2) The power button doesn't have a little pit/hole for me to use the styli to push the power on.
3) Graffiti 2 is bad. (need 2 strokes instead of just 1. Why don't they just pay Xerox for the original Graffiti?)
In conclusion, the Z22 is an affordable and a very practical Palm .
Customer Review: A simple PDA, and a great gift Summary: 4 Stars
I got this PDA as a gift from some friends, and except for a few minor annoyances, I'm really happy with it.
Pros:
- It's a compact, simple unit that's been stripped down to its most basic but important functions (managing contacts, calendar, etc.)
- A really clean and simple interface (i haven't ever owned a PDA before, and it literally took minutes to understand most of it's functions and features)
- The Graffiti writing system: I rarely have problems with this, and it's surprisingly nice how well it works (though you do have to write a little bit slower than you normally might)
- The battery lasts an incredibly long time (I can often go for a few days at least without a recharge)
- Lack of a huge number of features: For me, anyway, this was kind of an avantage...I avoid gadgets that cram a huge number of features and functions into one unit at the expense of a clean, simple interface and reliability, and have no problem carrying a separate phone (especially since neither is particularly big/heavy)
Cons:
- Syncing with a computer: I don't feel that the lack of bluetooth is a huge drawback, but when I tried syncing this through USB with my computer (a Mac), I just found the process clunky and unnecessarily complicated (unlike the actual interface on the Palm itself), so I use it alone now, without the computer.
- The screen is a little difficult to see clearly in the sunlight outside (which is quite a problem, since the point of a PDA is managing calendars, etc., on the go, including outdoors)
Overall, I would definitely recommend this, especially for such a reasonable price.
