Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Palm TX Handheld with Hard Case

Customer Review: Palm TX, Back to their roots.
Summary: 5 Stars

I think that many people out there have missed the old reliable Palm pilot of old. Well Palm has gone back to that style and stopped trying to be everything to everyone. The Palm TX is very stable and very user friendly, you might say Palm has trimmed the plant to make a much healthier stronger plant for the long run. The color display is very clean and crisp. The built in features allow you to link with Wi-Fi and Blue tooth, I can go on-line via the Wi-Fi and I can share information with my blue tooth enabled cell phone, I can even dial my cell from a stored phone book entry in the palm. These are very nice minor features. The highlights come in when you go looking for the appointment calendar or any of the features you loved when the original Palm devices came out. The down side...yes there is a down side. Many of your much beloved palm software may not work on the TX. So simply plugging in your new device won't work, you will have to remove the old software and do a fresh install on your home computer. This didn't really bother me, my last palm was destroyed over 6 months ago. I have been studying my options since and not using the software. No loss in my case.
The Hard case, well it's just that. It's hard and it's a case. It snaps shut in a sliding fashion and locks tight. My kids had a hard time figuring the case out. The downside of the hard case, it's to big for your pocket and you have no belt hook to put it on, in or around you to keep your device handy. It will protect your Palm...because you can't take it with you...easily.

Customer Review: Good product but difficult upgrade
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this product as an upgrade for my Palm Tungsten C. I like the product (although I miss the Tungsten C keyboard) and the hard case has already proven very useful (when I dropped the machine on a tile floor). I did, however, have a number of problems with the migration of my old programs to the new machine. Some of the new versions of programs didn't install properly (Versamail and Documents to Go were particular problems). I would suggest that you check out the Palm website before running the install -- following the advice there will prevent a number of costly (in terms of time) problems. The online Palm help was mixed -- one person gave me bad advice and another got me going in the correct direction. Make sure you have your registration keys handy because you may need to reinstall some of your software.

Your process might be also be easier if you keep the following in mind:
1. Whenever you need to do a hard reset of the machine, Wi-Fi connectivity information isn't restored on your next Hotsync -- keep any Wi-Fi security keys handy.
2. Documents to Go may detect some documents that it can't actually work with (in my case, documents that were meant to be used with the eReader software) and won't fail gracefully if you try to use them within the app (it will try to convert them and may require a hard reset -- actually I still have lingering problems after a Hotsync that I think are related to a failed conversion).

In summary, good product, but beware the upgrade path!

Customer Review: Tried and True...
Summary: 4 Stars

The Palm OS has been around for awhile, and while it may a bit outdated and not have quite as many bells and whistles as Windows mobile, it is a much more proven and stable platform. I bought an iPaq with windows mobile 6 loaded on it and it pulled what windows is famous for, crashing, and freezing up. Also, a bit of surprise, it didn't work well with microsoft excell which is a microsoft product! Some of the features available in excell did not transfer over to windows mobile! I returned the iPaq and went with a palm

The Palm on the otherhand works great, it syncs with outlook, and microsoft office products and does so seamlessly so far (using documents to go which comes with the palm). It hasn't crashed once (knocking on wood of course) and has many nice features. The Wifi, and bluetooth are easy to set up and connect and the screen is quite large, clear, and bright with a landscape mode.

the only real differences between the TX and the Tungsten Palm Tungsten E2 Handheld is that with the TX you can "hide" the writing surface and have a full screen where as with the tungsten you cannot. The tungsten also does not allow for widescreen. Great for the internet mostly but if this isn't a necessity for you the tungsten has the same features for $78 bucks less (as of 2/09-08)

All in all I'm happy with the palm and highly recommend it!

Customer Review: Good spec for a PDA, but it have a touch screen problem
Summary: 1 Stars

This is the first PDA I owned. I was excited as I received this product; however, I was quickly disappointed after a few days when the screen become unresponsive to the stylus. For instance, when I tried to click on the Memos icon, I get no respond or another application open instead. Another example of the problem is when I used the Note Pad, the screen make weird marks or inaccurate marks when I tried to write a letter or number.
I was in a looped with the stylus calibrating and even after the stylus become active again, a few minutes later, it becomes defected again. I tried soft reset and hard reset but it did not fixed the problem at all. Finally, I decided to go onto Palm's forum to find a way to fix it. Yet, I found out that there are many problems with other Palm's users revolving around this setback since '06 or even earlier; however, it seem that Palm's engineers/technicians are not taking much action in fixing this known situation that have many Palm's consumer unhappy and having their product refurbished, but only to have the product further defected. However, there are a few solutions that other found helpful without the help of Palm's Support, but it was not for me.
I guess this goes as a lesson for me to looked up product's problem before taking a head-dive into a total disappointment in the end.

Customer Review: Expecting good results... (will update) -- Updated
Summary: 3 Stars

Okay, so I bought this for my dad's Christmas present from me. I looked at cnet.com without even bothering to see the user ratings.
Apparently a LOT of people have had issues with the random start ups and the horrible customer service.

So, this item was either an average 6.1 out of 10 from the users, because there were a few lucky ducks who haven't had any issues with this PDA.
The editors gave it a 8.0 out of 10 and put it on there "CNET Editors Top 5 Choices" list.

I don't know what to expect, but I'm expecting something.

UPDATE 12/26/07

What a piece of crap! It isn't compatible with anything, even itself!! It started rebooting itself OUT OF THE BOX!! This is a terrible product. The Palm Company has taken a huge nose dive in quality. My advice? GET AN HP!! They work better, they're more compatible with everything. What a waste of money, I've already sent this thing back. I'm getting a refund in FULL, thank you Amazon.com for that, but please, if you want stable customer purchases, don't sell a product people have rash hatred for, please.

This thing deserves a negative 8 as a score, it has caused a black hole!! shame I can't change the rating star thing...
