Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of ATC2K Waterproof Action Cam

Customer Review: Great Multipurpose Camera
Summary: 5 Stars

First off, the shipping was FAST! It shipped out Saturday (got the notification Sunday morning) and it showed up on Wednesday, very pleased with that.

This thing is durable, I used it for paintball the same day I got it to test it out. It took a shot to the lens, and two to the back cap (where the card and batteries are) and it still works perfectly. The back cap has O-rings on it so when they said "water proof" they meant it. Im a pilot and im going to be using this same camera when I go flying, and when i go rock climbing.

It comes with a lot of adapters to mount on anything, handle bar mount and a helmet mount and it comes with Velcro straps and rubber straps.

It also comes with a USB adapter to directly link to your computer and even video cables so you can hook it up to a TV, It also comes with silicon grease for the O-Rings on the back cap.

Now you are getting what you are paying for, resolution is pretty low, frame rate bounces around (only noticed it twice in an hour long paintball test) and the sound is kinda pixelated. The mounting and camera adjustment can be a little stiff and could piss you off if your in a hurry. Mode selection is confusing even when looking at the manual (change resolution, frame rate, sound, etc) stock everything is at the highest settings and if you have a 2 gig card in there you really don't need to change settings (hour long video was just under 2 gigs).

Considering the price this camera is a steal, 5/5.

Customer Review: Heavy, no sound, poor docs, crummy menu, lousy product
Summary: 1 Stars

I received this for Christmas. Here are my observations.

It is very heavy. I would never mount this to my helmet and ride with it. It doesn't come with an SD card (?!) Luckily I had one for some other electronics that I have. I loaded it in and recorded some video and audio from my living room. I then extracted the SD card and loaded it into my Mac. The video shows up as a .avi file. Good! I tried playing it back and found the video poor and grainy. There was basically no audio at all. I heard some clicking, and my voice was very, very quiet. Basically no audio at all. Okay, time to read the manual. The menu system is very VERY poor. I can't believe this got through their quality control! The audio control is either ON or OFF. No volume control at all, although it is hinted at in the manual. Hmmm... It will be easier and give much MUCH better performance to carry my Fuji camera around and use that when I want to record something. It even weighs less than this helmet cam!

There is an addendum stuck in here. It says the "ATC-2K supports the FAT16 format of the SD card ONLY". What?!?? This shows a severe lack of trying on the software developer! I'm not going to format my SD card to FAT16 to support this piece of junk.

Yuck. Finally, it came in one of those wrappers that must be torn to shreds to open. I wonder if I can return it? My wife ordered it from Oregon Scientific. I can't believe they produced something this bad.

Customer Review: Adequate and works as advertised.

This is exactly what I expected. It gets the job done. So far I've taken it on two mountan bike rides, numerous motercycle rides and on a 20 foot snorkleing dive. I bought two 2 gig sticks and have ever only had to use 1 of them. 2 Gig gets you about an hour. The display will nominally show how much time you have remaining on the memory. It alternately shows how much time you have been recording. The smaller buttons are a little tricky and the menus requre you to read the owners maual to figure out how to navigate, but I rarely change anything so I never have to. Press the big button to start (hear 1 beep);see the display count up;press the big button to stop;(hear 2 beeps); the display shows the time remaining. Thats it. Plugging a standard mini USB cord into the back of it makes it act like a standard flash device. So no need to install any software. Transfer is kind of slow, but what do you want? There are some features that let you change the frame rate and the picture quality. It says doing that will make your videos smaller, but I never bothered checking those features out. The audio is crap. I have read that they make the mic insesnsetive to muffle wind noise, this is true. Around the house the audio is muffled but while moving, you hear how the wind kind of takes over. I use Windows movie maker for all editing. It is free and does everything I need it to do. For the price, this camera is probably the best one out there. It is rugged and the quality is fit for youtube.

Customer Review: bike cam
Summary: 4 Stars

This cam is good for your action pack, but the quality is not the best that I could get.. however it was better than average for the price. the quality to size of disk space is pretty big. 2 gigs to one hour of play.. that's 640x420, that's pretty crappy for someone that is use to working with 1080p and above in terms of vid and textures. i do put the vids online however the clips are pretty quick due to the lack of good shots on my part.

as far as size goes its good weight for holding it but to place on a head mount is kinda awkward. placement on the body might require some testing in all acts of motion to get the best fit. battery life you could get about two full hours to 3 (that is a guess due to the fact I've yet to put fresh ones in) of continuous steaming. the buttons are really stiff in operation so they might hurt a few fingers if you don't have strong finger nails.. but beyond the buttons there is the screen its kinda small but appropriate for the size and what it can handle in ruggedness. viewing the screen might take a bit of use to.

so far I've used this while playing airsoft in close quarters games no really hits to the caseing or the screen. but i have come up to thinking that the best way to take vid is to hold it in one hand while the other has my replica(gun) in the other and just flip it back toward myself when the timing is good to get some face shots of my expression.

Customer Review: Small But Effective
Summary: 4 Stars

A neat little camera that comes with a number of mounting options.
Its as simple as add the memory card fit the batteries and off you go.
You have to read the little booklet to ensure that you do the correct presses of the buttons on the camera to get the fuctions as the display only gives you short codes but to start and stop video is very easy.
I find the cards are better download away from the camera.
If you are using 2Gb cards as I was it does take some time to download from the camera using the cable transfer.
The picture quality was good for a 640 x 480 video at 30 fps, I personally have not tried the other resolutions as I have not seen the need.
The camera does not appear to have image stabalisation to avaoid shakes and so the video footage can give some wobble, changing where you mount the unit normally sorts this out.
The sound quality is not so good but with most action shots theres a lot of noise rather than soundtrack anyway.
The batteries last for about 1.5 hrs (I was using Duracell)
The sealing for use underwater makes the back a little stiff, but i would recomend using the lubricant on these seals at all times which makes the removal easier easier(sparingly or it gets messy)
For the price I have found it to be a good little unit for capturing some of the more unusual footage where you would not want to use a normal video camera.
