Customer Review: A remote is a great accessory. This one works as described.

I purchased this remote so I could start doing self-portraits of my family and to help with very slow shutter speed shots on a tripod (I haven't figured out how to not shake the camera when I press the shutter button without using the timer). I tested it out from various angles and it worked well. I had the same issue as others when standing at an angle; the lens or the grip gets in the way if you are standing too far to one side or the other. However, I feel that this has more to do with the placement of the sensor on the Canon EOS Rebel XSi (or similar cameras) than the quality of the remote. As with other IR (infrared) remotes, it only works when the line of sight is unobstructed. If you cover up the end of your TV remote or stand too far to one side, you will have the same result.
As for the working distance, I pulled out my tape measure to test this one. The remote worked consistently (from straight ahead) up to 25 feet. Beyond 25 feet, it instantly stopped working. It became increasingly more inconsistent at a shorter distance when as I adjusted the angle.
As for the remote design, it's kind of annoying that there are so many buttons that are useless. The top two buttons, "S" and "2S", work well, but none of the other buttons work with the Canon XSi. However, this is simply the hazard of buying a universal remote like this one. I'm assuming these buttons perform their designated functions on another camera model. The instruction sheet that came with the remote was also completely useless, as it didn't even tell you the difference between the "S" and "2S" buttons. I just pointed the remote at the camera and figured it out through trial-and-error. This was simple enough to figure out, but you would think this would be included in the instructions, since ones were provided.
My overall assessment is that this remote does what it's designed to do at a cheaper price than the Canon version. It's constructed well and easily fits in my hand and my bag. I can't say it's a must have, but I would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a remote and are okay with a universal-type remote that would seem to perform just as well as the brand name version. I can't really justify giving this 5-stars, since the Canon options are clearly better as they are designed for Canon cameras. However, this one performs as designed and is a good price.
