Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Opteka Professional Wrist Grip Strap for Digital & Film SLR Cameras

Customer Review: Surprisingly good value
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was researching wrist grip straps there were products ranging from dirt cheap to quite expensive. I had just bought a Canon 60D and Canon 15mm - 85mm lens to use for my personal funtime use and wanted to be able to have my camera always at the ready to swing into action for "priceless moments". A neck strap is out of the question for me, they are uncomfortable, draw attention to themselves, and get in the way when you want to have a camera ready to capture that magic moment. The price on the Opteka Professional Wrist Grip Strap was low enough that I thought if I hated it I could just throw it away. In fact, I think it is very well made for the price and very comfortable. We went to the zoo the day after Thanksgiving and spent much of the day. I never tired of carrying the camera at my side, and my fingers fell exactly where they should to operate the shutter release and control buttons/dials. A wrist strap helps you keep the camera very steady when zoomed out to maximum telephoto and makes it easy to use your left hand for focus/zoom. The camera felt very secure and the inside part of the grip felt comfortable and slip-free. I like the idea someone had about threading it in such a way that the buckle is at the bottom. I think if it were at the top it would get in the way. Another benefit is that when the buckle is at the bottom, you can loop the remaining end of the strap inside the grip part so it doesn't flop around. I keep my camera in a Case Logic DSLR case and with the gip attached it is very easy to pull it out. I really can't see spending more.

Customer Review: It is just OK
Summary: 2 Stars

The quality seems decent enough. It is not spectacular, but very typical of low-cost straps. I can easily hold the camera with my hand inserted into the wrist strap.

But I do have two complaints. The first is that it doesn't fit my hand. When my hand is inserted, I have to twist it into an uncomfortable position to get to the shutter release. This may be more a problem of my Nikon D300 not being designed to be held this way. I am interested if whether another manufacturer has figured out a way to make this work.

The other complaint involves using it with a tripod. The bottom mount of the strap screws into the bottom of the camera and the tripod bracket screws into the strap mount. But the strap does not support the weight of the camera and it creeps, the camera doesn't stay where I point it in portrait mode. It works slightly better in landscape.

I now unscrew it when on the tripod, but since the top end of the strap has no easy way to disconnect from the top of the camera, in this case the strap just dangles in the way.

One more concern is that I miss having a shoulder strap and I have not figured out how to connect a shoulder strap and the writst strap to the camera at the same time.

One thing I like though is that it can be used to carry the camera like a luggage handle, and that feels more secure to me then just holding the camera without the strap.

I am going to search to see if there is a better option for myself.

Customer Review: worth to have it.
Summary: 4 Stars

I have bought four hand straps in the same time because I like to compare them with huge price difference.
1. Opteka Professional Wrist Grip Strap for $8.47
2. Heavy Duty Camera Hand Strap for $8.49
3. Canon 2344A001 E1 Hand Strap for $15.75 + shipping $7.48
4. Nikon NIAH4 AH-4 Hand Grip Strap for $79.95 + shipping $5.75.

After I have tried all of them, I have found that the first two were almost exactly the same. They are comfortable and come with a padding that can work with or without a battery power grip. The number 3 Canon hand strap is also like the Opteka and Heavy Duty ones with two exceptions. One was the brand name and the other one was no padding coming with it. It works fine with my Canon D7 with a power grip. If you are trying to use this hand strap with Canon cameras without the power grip, or if you are using this hand strap with other brands of cameras, you have to buy the padding to connect the hand strap to the bottom of the cameras. The Nikon AH-4 costs almost 10 times as the first two and three times as the Canon one. But its material is better and it has its only name brand. In addition, it has an addition feature that the other three do not have. Your thumb is behind the cover for the first three hand straps. But Nikon one has a cross section that your thumb is between the two sections that gives you more security to handle the camera. So, it is up to you to make your choice and they are all good to have them.

Customer Review: Good, but some trouble...
Summary: 2 Stars

I'll just go into the trouble I'm having, with a warning that I'm new to photography and perhaps I'm just not understanding something (this product arrived with no instructions)...

The base mount for this product is basically a plastic base that screws into the tripod mount on the bottom of your camera. On this product, there is a raised "lip" on this mount on the side that is supposed to lay flush with the camera body. Because of this lip, which digs into the camera body, I can't get the mount to lay flat again the camera body. I don't understand the purpose of the lip either. It is almost like it is custom made for a camera with a groove in that specific area so the lip can rest within that groove. My camera (Nikon D3100) doesn't have this groove, needless to say. I'm a big worried that the lip is damaging the body.

Also, you have to mount the other end of this product to the camera's neckstrap thread (the metal hook you lace the neckstrap through on the camera body). The trouble is, I can't mount this product properly and my neckstrap at the same time; there just isn't enough room in the hook. So, really it is one or the other. I ended up rigging this up to the base of the neckstrap so it is sorta a "work around". But I'm really considering returning this.

If, however, your camera can accomodate the lip on the base and you have not need to use the neckstrap, this product seems well made and comfortable.

Customer Review: Great Wrist Strap
Summary: 5 Stars

Sometimes a product will come along that is worth more than you pay for it. This is one of them. The Opteka Professional Wrist Strap is a great value. I paid a little over 7 dollars for it! I own a Nikon AH-4 that I spent 75 dollars for. If I had known how comfortable the Opteka was going to turn out to be I never would have purchased the AH-4. Not that the AH-4 is not a great product. It is an excellent product but not worth 75 bucks for sure. The Opteka is the other way around. It is well worth more than the 8 dollars you pay for it.

It's well made with a solid screw on carbon fiber (or so it appears to be carbon fiber) mount that attaches to the tripod mount point on the camera. The mount screw has a follow through screw so you can attach a tripod to it.

The hand cushion is comfortable and has a silicone or rubber pad on one side to give you a good sure feel when wearing it. The nice thing about the Opteka is its comfort factor. You can wear it for hours without having to take it off. When you do take it off, it slides easily off your hand without having to "wriggle" out of it.

This is an excellent value for the money. If you want to dump your shoulder strap because they are bulky and can cause accidents (like the strap getting caught on something and the camera gets pulled along with the strap) go with the Opteka hand strap. It's small yet convenient and safer than a shoulder strap.
