I purchased this product (first week of December 2009) as a Christmas gift for my in-laws. Did not receive it until Dec/24th. On the 24th before and on the 25th after giving them the frame, I tried to load the internal memory with family pictures. The in-laws are not at all tech savvy. However this was not the problem since I was the one trying to do the file loading and I am quite familiar with PCs and memory devices. Although a good price when I purchased it ($89.99) this was not a quality product in my opinion.
The only good thing about the frame was that it had a good picture (although with drawbacks noted below) and the frame itself was attractive.
Negative things about the product:
** Internal memory was corrupt. After many attempts on the 24th and 25th to load pictures into the internal memory it became clear that it was impossible to get more than 40% of the internal capacity of 1GB used before the loaded pictures `froze' during playback. This would occur at different places during the picture loading and subsequent playback so it certainly wasn't the pictures. Also there was no problem on playback with any of the pictures I was trying to load when using them in a slideshow on my PC. This would be extremely frustrating to someone who expected to be able to just turn the frame on and see all the pictures displayed.
** Videos did not have sound. This is either a problem or poor advertising. Although the frame manual says that it plays sound only from .mp3 format that is meant for loading a sound format file to be played as background for the still picture display (or at least that is what is inferred). This frame advertises that it can play videos with format of AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. I tested it's capability with AVI and MPEG-1. While it played the videos fine there was NO soundtrack. One would expect (or at least this user) that if the frame could play the video it would also play the sound that went along with the video! Having the video with no sound takes one back to the silent picture era. Again, not satisfactory when trying to show videos of grandchildren or other holiday gatherings to grandparents.
The 2 items above were real deal breakers for this product. Other items below are also problems but may not be deal breakers for some people.
** Although picture display seemed good it was VERY sensitive to reflection from windows and the angle at which the frame was placed on the table. This sensitivity reduced the advantage of having such a large display window (that should enable the viwer to sit a good distance away from the frame during playback) for the pictures since the pictures would appear much darker or have reflections on them when sitting a reasonable distance (such as 8-10 feet) away from the display.
** The only way to `drag and drop' picture files was to hook frame up to a PC. Otherwise the user is restricted to copying one picture at a time which is an extremely laborious and frustrating proposition. Naturally for people who are not tech savvy or do not have a PC this is a drawback.
** The User Guide is poorly written. This product is made in China and it seems that someone in China who has been taught `proper' English but not fluent English wrote the guide since there are many places where it is not clear. It also assumes a level of expertise (using menu screens, loading pictures, the misleading part about not having sound with videos, etc.) that is not present for many people for whom this product would be purchased.
** General poor quality of the product - The remote showed signs of extreme wear and tear (bubbles already forming on the plastic covering over the buttons plus signs that the buttons themselves weren't going to last too much longer in their ability to depress and rebound easily) after only a few hours of use. Also, the slot used for inserting a SD memory chip did not allow for easy removal after insertion, requiring the use of needle nosed pliers to remove the chip or at least someone with narrow fingers and long nails to accomplish this task. Again this would be very frustrating for someone without much experience in handling these memory chips and would probably cause them to be broken in short order.
All in all, I was not satisfied with this product at all and am returning it through Amazon's return policy and will not be buying another Opteka product.
