Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo UP-A1 Dock for the iPodCustomer Review: Not compatible with HT 3300 but worked with HT 5300 Summary: 2 Stars
Let me start by saying I purchased the HT-S3300 system first and a seperate UP-A1 IPOD dock. The drawbacks of the HT-3300 system were I couldn't get VIDEO through the up A1 dock no matter what I tried. Secondly, the sound is pretty good for the price but the AMP has limited base capabilities but still adequate. Speakers were good but not great sound quality.
Here is why I upgraded to S5300 after a week.
#1. IPOD dock>>I read it would work with S3300 system but only got video through it for a brief moment one time then never again. The HT-5300 comes with the IPOD dock so I figured it would play videos on my nano 4th generation. However it did not immediately play video. I did manage to get Videos to play. A>IPOD has to have setting set to TV output as on, thus videos won't play on nano screen but should come through to TV. B> You need to plug a regular RCA cord to the "Monitor OUT" button on the "Composite VIDEO" area. C> U need to change your TV to the output button that you plugged it in on. >>Note I use a comcast remote so changed the output to the port the composite cord plugged into. However I still did not get Video untill on My actual TV remote that I hadn't used in a long time I changed the imput to say AUDIO. One guy told me on his actual TV remote he used the imput button to change the input to "Video or composite" however on my remote it didn't give me that option but had an audio option> when I clicked the source input button it started working. now it works everytime. Not sure if I would of done this when I had the HT-3300 if that would of worked. who knows. So in conclusion you have to change the input when you want to watch ipod videos to the composite input source and then back to HDMI when watching Cable.
Also, I run a DVD and XBOX 360. and had to change to all HDMI port cables before all these worked correctly. Here is the problem the XBOX 360 comes with a component cord but no fricken component input for the GAME on the component side. makes you go buy a HDMI cable. so I did and it actually works fantastic and sound and graphics are awesome on the 5300 system.
I have had no problems with my unit cutting in and out with the HDMI video as mentioned in other reviews.
Lastly with the HT5300 let me comment on the AMP. The amp has awesome base and sound, but lets say its on a monotone channel a few hours, if it does not sense allot of base coming through it simply switches to "Standby MODE" in other words amp turns off. You can't force it too stay on, however you simply have to turn up volume or change to tuner or another channel playing some base and pops back on. This is a minor inconvenience but is noteworthy. When back on AMP should stay on again for a few hours or indefinately if playing the radio. Finally, if you adjust the BASE be aware it overides the output on all the other speakers so they won't put out quite as much volume. Thus, I turned my Base to a +4 reading and left my speakers around +8 and that got great output from everything.
IN conclusion why HT-5300 is better:
#1. Actually got video output from nano 4th gen and never did with 3300 system.
#2. Price for $500 bucks the HT-5300 comes with an ipod dock witch is a $100 dollar value right there. You will pay around $350 for the 3300 and not get a dock and unreliable compatibility issues with your iphone or ipod.
#3. Base AMP is way better sounding and has better output
#4. Speakers are better with HT-5300 and sound better.
#5. Note: I put 2 in wall speakers in and connected to system and worked well with the Receiver, however I would not mount your in wall speakers with any bigger then 16 gage wire because its hard to get even the 16 gage wire in the Receiver input holes. Hope this helps, PEACE , BIG D
