Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Customer Review: An awesome receiver
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this Onkyo TX-SR806 7.1 receiver in conjunction with the Onkyo SKSHT750 7.1 speaker system and let me tell you it sounds amazing. Words cannot describe how blown away how it sounds.

Where do I start? The receiver is a breeze to just plug and play if that's what you're looking to do. I plugged in my speakers and ran the cables to my TV and DVD player just to test it out. I first of course ran the Audyssey setup, which was also a breeze. As soon as I plugged in the microphone that the system comes with it knew what to do and set up my system for ideal settings, which you can go in later and change, although I found that it was very accurate in calculating my speaker distances. There are two different setups you can do, the Dynamic EQ(tm) or the Dynamic Volume(tm), I only did it once with the Dynamic EQ as I currently don't have enough home theater experience to change the settings.

It works excellently with my Harmony 880 remote, but the remote that came with it is just as easy to hold and use, all the buttons are clearly labeled to their purpose and you can change some very unique settings on the fly without having to go into the main menu.

Video Gaming - My main concern with buying this was the input lag from user inputs via a controller when playing video games. The lag is certainly noticeable when playing Rock Band, and requires recalibration and the lag times definitely changed. To give you an idea of the lag, I had to change the video lag (the time you strum to the time the game sees that you strummed) went from around 80ms to 125ms, which doesn't sound like a lot but when you're mowing down zombies on Left 4 Dead or trying to pick off a sniper on Call of Duty it might become noticeable. L4D there was a slight notice in the lag from when I went to turn my character around and when my character started to actually turn around, but it was really only noticeable when you looked for it. I have played other games without noticing it (Tiger Woods and Forza Motorsport 2). It's possible that this will change when I get a better TV that can handle the 1080p output, my TV inserts a lag I'm sure down converting the signal to 720p (my xbox was configured for 1080i output at the time, so I'm sure the converting from 1080i, to p, down to 720 had something to do with it). I will update this review on video games if anyone wants to, simply send me a message (take a look at my profile for my email and I will help you out).

DVD - I went and bought a 1080 upconverting DVD player just to test this out. There is some lag when switching between HDMI inputs, but nothing you're ever going to notice unless you're in a big rush to turn on your DVD player and start the movie right now! Going from pausing to play there is a short delay in when you will hear audio. Meaning if you pause a movie and go away, then come back and hit play, you will see the movie continue and about 2 seconds later the audio will kick in. This might be in inherent problem in my DVD player however, as I have not tried this out with a DVD in my xbox 360. Now onto the real positives of this system, 7.1 surround. This sound amazing!! With just about every Dolby digital technology ((Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding) [...]embedded in this receiver you're going to be getting the best out of your 7.1 speakers. If you don't have 7.1 you're putting this receiver to shame. The bass and fidelity of this system in the best I've ever heard, I can say with all honestly it sounds better than an actual movie theater.
I put it through the typical paces of must have DVD's, The lobby scene in the Matrix, Black Hawk Down "Irene" scene, Top Gun opening sequence and Cloverfield to name a few. Everyone I've showed this to is absolutely blown away in awe. You truly must hear it to believe it.

There are more than enough inputs to handle even any number of devices. I currently have 4 devices, only 2 of them HDMI and could connect another 4 if I wanted. Whatever device input you select the receiver will automatically select the best decoder to use to maximize your speaker system. My cable box for example makes it select THX cinema, and my 360 depending on the game usually uses all channel stereo, newer games like Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 however makes it change to THX Games.

I will be having a blu ray player come Chrismas time and can put this through some real paces with Blu-Rays actually filmed with 7.1 (all my DVD's are only 5.1 and upconverted to 7.1 by this receiver). If anyone has any questions about performance that you want to know please feel free to email me and I can check it out for you and even send a video response back to you. I have all 3 game systems at my disposal, which was my main concern.

This receiver can run pretty warm so be sure to leave some ventilation for it. If you're tight on space, not a problem as you purchase some 120mm fans ([...])like many audiophiles do for their components.

If you are looking to break out of the Home Theater in a Box or simply want something better than your TV that can handle more inputs this receiver will not disappoint!!
