Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)Customer Review: Excellent Receiver! Summary: 4 Stars
The SR606 is an excellent receiver. Even though I am fairly "electronic literate", I still had a learning curve on this one. But it was time well spent. Have it hooked up to a Panasonic Blue Ray DVD player, a dual cassette deck routed through an 18 band graphic EQ, a cable box, a Hi-Fi VHS deck, and a CD player. Great picture, great sound. I had the sound quality manually set up pretty well. At least I thought so. Until I used the included mic to let the system adjust itself. Once that was done, wow... even BETTER quality! Btw, I'm using 3-way liquid cooled Sherwood floor speakers for the fronts, Jensen floor speakers for the rear, Yamaha floor speaker for center. No sub woofer. TV is a regular Mitsubishi 36" tube TV. No LCD or plasma.
Here are some things that others should know...
If using a 5.1 speaker setup... 2 fronts, 1 center, 2 backs, with or without a sub... be sure to connect the rear speakers to the "surr" left and right, not the "back" left and right. And be sure to use the systems mic and sound self-calibrations.
If you have a TV without a HDMI hookup, and are using a Blue Ray player, it might not be possible to use HDMI from the player to the receiver. But your results may vary. My attempt resulted in no picture. S-Video connections from my receiver to my TV failed as well. Now, this could be a problem with my TV's S-Video plug, or it could be something to do with some sort of HDMI to S-Video conversion. I'm awaiting a reply from Onkyo on that one. Regardless, when using the RCA connections, as I'm now doing... _NO_ problem. Great picture, and great sound. BETTER picture on an HD TV, I'm sure!
The only minor complaint that I have is that there's no audio out to the TV. If there were, I could use my TV speakers as my center. But overall, great receiver, great sound, great picture, great amount of audio and video connections, and great price. Highly recommended :).
Customer Review: Simplest setup ever. Summary: 5 Stars
This system is amazing. It has every bit of the presence and almost indistinguishable in sound quality to the more expensive Denon. Unlike the Denon, I was very pleasantly surprised at how smoothly everything just worked. I am using the Onkyo receiver, an Onkyo CD changer, A DirectTV HD Receiver, SONY PS3 (as a Blue-ray player), and an HDDVD player. I am running a full 7.1 setup, using the Definitive Audio ProMonitor series. Sound quality is great, and frankly the setup is so overpowered for my living room that it is a little ridiculous.
The high point, however, is the extremely easy installation. I just plugged the video sources in (HDMI), ran a single HDMI out to the TV, and the HD signal up-conversion seamlessly adjusts everything to 1080i. Even non-HD channels are no problem. I don't get any picture jumping around when I switch between channels, just smooth video. The automatic speaker setup, common on most high end receivers these days, worked perfectly. I also run audio from three different networked PCs through the system, and it handles their inputs well.
In contrast, I have also recently spent three days of my life struggling to help my father set up his more expensive Denon receiver, which may have actually been the most difficult to configure device I have ever encountered. Video up-conversion just performed poorly, on-screen menus didn't show up, configuration had to be done via an insane number of button pushes from the lcd screen on the front of the unit, and menu options were undocumented in any manuals or on any online support forums. After fighting it for three days, we finally patched each video device directly to the television and separately routed audio through the receiver.
My point is that, unless you have a HUGE room with a cathedral ceiling, this unit is everything you need, and I think better than other, more expensive models.
Customer Review: Great Reciever!! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the 606 a few days ago and am glad to say that I am pretty impressed with this reciever. I bought the 606 to replace my old Pioneer VSX-816 which had no HDMI thus I could not get the DTS MA/ Tru-HD lossless audio. This was never a big deal to me being as though I am no audiophile, but when I needed to upgrade the Pioneer (ran out of inputs), I wanted to make sure I got a few more bells and whistles.
All I can say is - WOW! My system has never sounded better. Even my crappy HTIB speakers filled the room with crisp, clear sound. Setup was quick and easy and I hardly had to look at the manual. The first thing I did was use the audessy mic to calibrate my speakers and then popped in Batman Begins (Tru HD). The difference is remarkable. The scene where Batman rides the tumbler over the rooftops, you can actually hear pieces of the roof falling around you. I've been rewatching all of my HDDVDs since.
All of my devices fed to my 606 are sent to my TV via one HDMI cable.
My devices include:
TV- Hitachi 57f59
Gaming console- xbox 360 (component)
Gaming console/Blu-ray player- PS3 (HDMI)
Cable-FIOS STB/DVR (HDMI)
HDDVD player- Toshiba D2-(HDMI)
I have not heard any buzzing or popping like others have mentioned. It also does not seem to run as hot as I thought it would, my Pioneer ran much hotter.
The bad:
xbox 360 takes about 5 sec. longer to come on screen after pressing the power button on the console. This may be common when using the HDMI (previously running straight to TV via component) and when you power down any of your devices with the input on the 606 still connected, you get a bright blue screen. Why didn't the just make it black?
All in all, this was a great buy and I highly recommend the Okyo 606!!
Customer Review: Great value for the price! Summary: 5 Stars
This is my very first review of anything on Amazon and I told myself I would write one for the Onkyo 606. So, here I am.
First off, I'd like to say that this receiver is awesome! I wasn't expecting so much for what I paid for! I just love the fact that it was 4 HDMI inputs for various components. I have my upconverting DVD-player and my PS3 hooked up to via HDMI. They both look and sound great! The main reason I bought this receiver was to take advantage of its Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding capabilities. I know that the PS3 decodes both of these formats and sends it as LPCM sound but I'm going to eventually buy a stand-alone Blu-ray player in the future. Probably the Sony BDP-S350 once it goes down in price. Anyway, the sound on this thing is awesome! I have a JBL CS6100BG 5.1 system hooked up to it and sounds amazing! I've never heard sound so clear before! I'm so glad I bought those speakers along with these magnificent receiver! Probably one of the only negative things I have to say about the receiver is that it gets pretty hot. I use it an enclosed space because its so big. I plan on getting a better TV stand in the future but that will have to do for now. I only use it for about 3 or 4 hours max in one sitting and then allow it to cool for about 30 minutes or so. I've read that people have it turn itself off because it gets too hot, but that's yet to happen to me. So, just make sure you have plenty of ventilation space when you set it up!
Overall, I'm very pleased with this receiver. The Audessy speaker set up was painless and practical and gave me good results as well. This receiver is an excellent choice if you want to enjoy HD sound without breaking the bank. I was hesitant at first when looking at reviews but now, I absolutely love my Onkyo 606! Thank you, Onkyo for such a great product!
Customer Review: Stay Away from this AV Receiver Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this receiver as part of the 7100 home theater system back in December of 2008. Initially I was impressed and happy with everything. But after about 6 months the receiver started having handshake issues with HDMI (PS3), sometimes not recognizing the signal from the PS3. Shutting everything off, unplugging devices, but still no recognition of HDMI signal. Then I tried unplugging all HDMI connections and plugging back in, and it worked...until I shut the power off on the receiver. The next time I powered it on, it went back to not being able to recognize the PS3 input signal.
So, now I have my cable set top box inputs going straight to my Panny 50" plasma HDTV, and my PS3 HDMI input going straight to my HDTV as well. Then I ran an optical cable from the PS3 digital optical out into the 606 receiver's "game/tv" optical input. How does everything work now? BETTER THEN WHEN THE SYSTEM WAS BRAND NEW OUT OF THE BOX! The video picture quality was being degraded even just "passing through" the 606 receiver. Now that it is wired straight from source to HDTV, it is a vast improvement for me. Also, the audio being output via optical from the PS3 to the 606 is an improvement over past audio quality.
Bottom line I guess is that I'm pissed that this receiver is defective and won't recognize HDMI inputs or play video, but I'm happy because I found a work around that provides better picture and sound quality then when the product was wired as intended to be used. It's still under warranty, but since the 606 has widespread issues with this, I've heard it takes 2 months of aggravation trying to deal with repair of the unit...so, I'll just roll with it as I have it hooked up now and just hope the receiver continues to process the audio signal for me. But, I'll never buy Onkyo again.
