Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Onkyo DXC390 6 Disc CD PlayerCustomer Review: Good but it didn't stand out from the crowd Summary: 3 Stars
My old Technics turntable CD changer recently died. I purchased it back in the early 1990's. Since I had an Onkyo receiver, I decided to try out this Onkyo turntable CD changer. While it is a good and reliable product, it didn't really stand out from other CD changers I have seen and heard. Some people have remarked that when they bought this new CD changer that they could hear a real improvement in the sound quality of their music CDs. It sounded the same to me as my old Technics. No better. No worse. I would think in about 15 years they would have been able to make it sound better. My speakers are very high quality and if it had been better, I would have heard it. Additionally, my old Technics had a unique feature that seems to have disappeared from turntable CD changers. It could play the first track from each CD, then the second track and so on. My wife and I really liked this feature. While the Onkyo does support 6 CDs, I would have preferred to have had this style of sequential play. This is a good CD changer, but it doesn't really stand out from the crowd. In Onkyo's defense, this is a good CD changer but I doubt many, if any CD changers stand out from the crowd these days. CD changers are not cutting edge technology anymore. Most are pretty much the same and no one seems to be doing much to make one better from another.
Customer Review: Great for Playing mp3 CD's Summary: 5 Stars
Most of my audio-video equipment is made by Sony, but I purchased this particular CD player made by Onkyo for one specific reason: It is the only carousel CD player I could find with the ability to shuffle play mp3 files burned to CD-R disks. I have about 1300 mp3 files/songs in my music collection, and am able to fit the entire collection on 6 CD-R's. Rather than to listen to a particular album or several albums at a time, my preference is to shuffle or randomly play all the songs in my collection.
The Onkyo can fit 6 CD's on its carousel, so I can randomly play my entire collection without ever having to change CD's. It plays the mp3 CD-R's flawlessly, the sound if fine, and the unit has not needed any service since buying it 2 years ago. What more can one ask for? Oh yes, the price is a true bargain as well.
My only gripe - and it is minor - is that there is about a 20 second time span between songs when in random play. I'm sure that if I had less disks and/or less mp3 files on each disk, the wait time between songs would be shorter when in random mode.
I presume that to accomodate 6 CD's on its carousel (most carousels hold 5 CD's), its depth is rather long from front-to-back (17 inches). So make sure it will fit on your shelf, cabinet, or table before purchasing it.
Customer Review: Why this instead of playing CDs on your DVD? Summary: 5 Stars
In a word, sound quality (OK, two words). If you have anything other than the most basic, low-end audio system, you will hear the difference in sound quality when listening to a CD on the Onkyo versus a DVD player. Highs are crisp, bass is solid without being muddy.
The unit itself is solid, and offers the ability to hold 6 CDs (and shuffle play). The changer works well -- no glitches so far after a few weeks of heavy use. Nice styling with an easy to see display. The buttons on the unit are a bit hard to see, but you'll quickly figure out what controls what.
The remote is not great, but decent. Good range so you can control disks from across the room. The buttons are rather small and don't provide much tactile feedback. I'm using this with an Onkyo receiver, so it can take advantage of the Onkyo interface (i.e., power up the CD player and the receiver automatically powers up as well and changes the input to CD). Only two cables to connect -- an optical out and the Onkyo interface cable.
The size is somewhat imposing (both height and depth). As other reviewers have mentioned, check the size specs before you buy to make sure it fits into the cabinet/rack you want to use.
Very happy with the performance, and find this to be an excellent value. Well worth the price!!
Customer Review: henry Summary: 4 Stars
I gave this one 4 stars only because there are better cd players out there like everything else it also comes with a price tag!and i would rather put my money into great speakers. The advise i have gotten from some pros."is to put my money into great speakers, after all that is what your going to hear and spend alittle less on the rest"... 30/70 or 40/60 the speakers being the higher of the two.My budget was $800.00 and spent $500.00 for my speakers, the pros where right great sound system.
This is a very good player for the money(bought mine from jr music, been very happy dealing with them for along time free shipping and also gave me a price break on some head phones i had already bought and then went on sale). This player works great with avg. cds,i think some people try and play mp3s and so on is why they have trouble(for me anyway i would rather have a better recording than try to save money by recording it myself).I have had mine for 2 months now and have had no worries and have just bought a 2nd for my father which he has had his for 2 weeks now and its still up and running which is saying something right there (he can be hard on somethings when he is first learning how to use them).I have mine hooked to the ONKYO 8211 with 4 energy C-3s speakers i couldnt be happier at the price i paid for all of it.
Customer Review: excellent value! Summary: 5 Stars
I give this unit 5 stars because I feel that it is an exceptional value - you get very high quality for a realistic price.I was after an audio system for my den that wouldn't break the bank.I figured on using my dvd player to play my cd's as well, but then remembered the purpose here was to play MUSIC.I decided for a modest investment,in this case around 150 bucks,I would be getting enhanced audio fidelity compared to the dvd player.6 disc wasn't too important to me,but it's a fun feature none-the-less.Mine hasn't produced any noticeable mechanical noises that I feel would detract from the value of this equipment.I have been very pleased with the sound quality, not really an "audiophile" but I can hear a distinct difference playing my cd's versus the dvd player (I was a bit sceptical that their would be any discernable difference).
As other reviewers have noted, dedicated cd players are oddly becoming increasingly more difficult to locate. If I had any negative thing to say with this player would be that it's rather LARGE,to accomodate the changer carousel - I would have prefered having a single tray player, but ironically couldn't find one with comparable quality that wasn't more expensive!
