Customer Review: Does the job, but don't expect much boom

I own a Cambridge Soundworks unit w/ the same form factor and similar features. Compared to the Onkyo in terms of audio quality, certainly the more expensive Cambridge Soundworks has a deeper richer bass. In fact, the Onkyo I'd say barely has adequate bass. However, the ease-of-use, stylish elegance and price w/ similar features makes the Onkyo a very good buy. If you listen to classical, talk-radio or vocals, this will do just fine in a 12'x12' room. If listen to hip-hop, rap, or any music that has deep bass, you'll hear the bass out of the Onkyo, but there definitely won't be a 'boom', just a subtle 'thud'. In short, $100 less compared to a Cambridge Soundworks if you're willing to give up a deep bass. This Onkyo is also made in Malaysia, not made in China so I have a little better confidence in quality of assembly.Customer Review: What a Sound ! What a Price!

Hi all, I just received this EXCELLENT product and can't stop talking about it. I didn't want to spend hundreds more like some of the other popular docks/clock radio, so I gave this one a try . Glad I did, the sound is clear, crisp, and the bass adequate for me. I use this unit for my IPOD and if the bass is not enough I just adjust the equalizer in my Ipod to boost up the bass. I love IPOD dock on the top of the unit and also the remote control for this unit also controls the IPOD! I also love the AM/FM tuner and the CD player as well. It all sounds great! Plus it has a built in handle that makes it very easy to use as a portable devise.
Bottom line, this product compares with the way more expensive units and at this price its a no brainer for me, I LOVE IT!

This is a tremendous value for the money. The sound is terrific, not too bass-heavy, very clear and powerful. I highly recommend it. Build quality, as with all Onkyo products I have owned, is top-notch. I will say that if you are looking for a bedside clock radio, look elsewhere, because the thing is large -- too large for a standard nightstand. I bought it for that purpose and realized that I had to put it across the room on my dresser because it was so large. I could still use it as a clock radio, but I had to use the remote to snooze, which is a bit unnatural. So I kept it as a bedroom CD player, and bought a standard clock radio to wake up to. I was on the verge of buying a cambridge system for over $100 more, but thought I would give this a go based on the excellent reviews here and elsewhere. Having owned a couple of sub $100 ipod speaker sets, I was a little apprehensive about the likely sound quality of this system that seems to promise a lot at a low price. I am no expert but all I can say is - It Delivers. Bass is more than adequate, and volume loud enough to fill a 25' x 20' room without any distortion. FM reception is great using the supplied indoor antenna. A real plus is the portability of the unit with the easy carry handle. I recently purchased this unit for my son's birthday. He is staying with us while he recovers from a motorcycle accident. He wanted an i-pod dock, so I got him this and glad I did. I have a decent stereo system and enjoy quality sound reproduction. This little unit does it all, CD playback, i-pod doc, Etc. as well as quality sound. The volume my not knock your socks off, but for casual listening it's great. Loud enough to fill any room.
