Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OmniMount CCH1B Center Channel Speaker ShelfCustomer Review: Good Product...But!! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this to mount on a Toshiba 32HL66 HDTV because it mentioned in the Technical Details here at the site it would work on most CRT's, DLP's, LCD's, projection TV's. The keyword here is projection TV's for an obvious reason, their dimensions are deeper. If your Flat panel is not at least 7 3/4" deep this shelf will not work for you unless you do as I did and came up with a modification for the rear leg assembly which I won't recommend. Like other reviews here I too had thought I didn't get the shelf pegs meant to overlap the top front of your TV. Looking carefully at the pictured illustration of all the parts, I had noticed the foot assembly in front of me(for rear support) didn't look exactly like that pictured, sure enough the front pegs were shipped attached to the foot assembly, so it's a good possibility others had overlooked this (not hard to do) and returned it thinking they were missing the shelf pegs. The shelf pegs are bare painted metal. I read at least one review that mentioned they scratched the front of his TV during installation. This can easily be avoided just by being somewhat careful, however I took the precaution of wrapping the peg with black electrical tape to cover the metal. It's virtually unnoticeble and protects the finish of your TV. 1/4" tubed black heatshrink would had been ideal, but I had none on hand. It would be a nice touch if the manufacturer would send these out with a black vinyl cover or the equivalent on these pegs. Oh well. Despite the forementioned quibbles I am happy with the product. It's well made and providing your TV goes deep enough you should be very happy with the results. It definately settled the what to do with the center channel speaker dilemna I had.
Customer Review: Does the job Summary: 3 Stars
Shelf does the job. I installed it upside down as recommended and it looks much better than with the little pegs.
I was a bit worried about the stability of the thing but once I got it on the TV it seems very stable and haven't had any problems with it.
The shelf comes with rubber pads for the rear feet. It appears the intended use is to peel the tape off the rubber and stick them to both the feet and the back of the TV. I don't know about anyone else but I'm not planning on "taping" anything to my TV. Luckily, it sits there fine without being taped down.
TV it's installed on is a 50" SONY DLP. The model number escapes me right now, I think it's a KDF something.
The two problems I saw with it and why it lost 2 stars:
1) The shelf is enourmous. My center speaker is fairly small. Little JBL Sattelite. Shelf is of the size that it looks like I should have a potted plant or two up there with the center speaker. While that might be to accomodate a larger speaker I would be hesitant to put any speaker too large (read heavy) on the shelf.
2) As stated I don't like the idea of having to tape the rubber feet to my TV. Since I don't want to tape it down I have to leave the peel offs on and that greatly reduces the friction between the feet and the rear of the TV. Having rubber pads that were sticky on only one side would allow them to adhere to the shelf feet and alow the rubber to grip on the tv.
All in all, only thing I've found like this on the market so if you don't have a shelf above your TV and don't want to mount the center on the wall...Buy one.
Customer Review: Skinny LCD screen? Beware. Summary: 2 Stars
This doesn't quite work on a really skinny LCD TV. Not without some workaround.
I'm putting a center channel speaker on mine. I had envisioned this tray as sitting flush with the front of my Viewsonic LCD. Like one of the reviewers has described (and pictured in the photos above), I liked the idea of flipping the tray over, and using its speaker-retention lip as a "grip" on the front of the TV bezel---instead of the ugly retaining pegs that ship with the tray. Well, if you force the tray to be flush with the front of the TV, then you have about 16" of tray sticking back behind the TV---and atop a skinny LCD chassis, there's no way those little back extension legs can find anything to grab onto. They're dangling in midair, and you still have 10-12" of unsupported metal tray. So on my TV, the only way to properly balance/support the tray is either 1) slide it forward, so several inches of it hang off the front of the TV, 2) build some rig that sits under the tray, behind the TV---basically giving it long legs---, or 3) push the TV and tray back until the tray hits a back wall, then screw some sort of prop into the wall to hold the back edge of the tray. I'm not real happy with any of these options.
I think the most harmonious solution would have been if the back legs telescoped out to 30-36". I suppose there would be some rigidity issues, and some may not like the extra appendages behind their TV, but at least the product would be functional for TVs of any thickness.
Customer Review: Legs Break!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I did quite a bit of online research when looking for a speaker shelf to attach to my 55" Samsung DLP and the OmniMount shelf appeared to be the way to go. Now that I have it, it's not a bad shelf, but I think I'd just build one myself if I had to do it again.
The first issue I had with the shelf is that Omnimount is stingy with the parts making it necessary to swap two different legs with one set of feet when trying to size the shelf for your TV. Not a major inconvenience, just an unnecessary hassle.
My real issue with the shelf is that, as you can see in the stock photo, it has two pegs at the front used to secure it to the front of the television. These two pegs are at least an inch long and extend onto the screen on my Samsung. I am sure most modern televisions would have the same issue. I am going to build my own pegs to replace the packaged ones.
Overall, not a bad shelf considering the price, just not what I was expecting.
UPDATE: After setting up the shelf and placing an Infiniti center channel speaker that certainly weighs less than 10 pounds on the shelf, the legs broke after less than a week. I called Omnimount and they refused to refund my money but did send new legs. Their firmness in refusing to refund my money leads me to believe this is not an uncommon occurrence.
Customer Review: My Second CCH-1B shelf has both black and unfinished parts. :-\ Summary: 3 Stars
This is the second omnimount shelf I've purchased through Amazon.com, the first being in 2007 right after I bought my 57" Mitsubishi DLP. It's a good design. The pegs in the front do protrude about 1/8" into the viewable area of the screen, but when I'm sitting in my easy chair it's not noticeable. I'm not going to try turning the shelf upside down as suggested in another review because I do occasionally have to move the TV cabinet and TV out from the wall and I don't want my components and speaker to come crashing down. That lip that's meant to prevent your speaker or components from sliding off the front isn't long enough to prevent the entire shelf from slipping off the TV, and it has a curve which makes it more unsteady-use the shelf pegs It's just fine with the shelf pegs. My issue with the one I just received a few days ago it that the parts are a mix of unfinished aluminum and black painted aluminum. The first one I purchased has all black painted parts-as they should be-but someone fell asleep at the switch on my second shelf. The shelf, legs and spacer were black and the shelf pegs, foot assemblies, lock nuts and support screws are silver(unfinished). The silver shelf pegs stood out like a sore thumb on the front of my black TV case so I had to paint them black. :-\
