Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACDCustomer Review: The greatest dvd player i've ever owned. Summary: 5 Stars
I am so blown away by this player that I couldn't be happier about the money i spent on it. I feel this player is worth every penny of the price.
The picture on a flat screen 32" LCD HD Emerson. The dvd's i own that say "remastered" versions looked like i was looking out a window rather than at a tv screen. Previously i ha all kinds of problems with my dvd player telling me disc cannot be played, discs skipping mid movie, whole chapters not being playable, a disc i honestly thought was defective in a box set but everything i've thrown at this Oppo it has played and quickly too. You don't have long loading times when you first put a dvd in. I have picture cd's, avi discs, divx movies, mpegs on cd and this Oppo plays it ALL. I also found out my tv doesn't support full 1080p resolution so i'm only using the 1080i resolution and STILL getting a terrific picture.
I couldn't wait to try out the SACD decoder for an SACD 5.1 CD of Dark Side of The Moon and the sound won't play through a "Digital/Optical" Cable. According to the user manual it's not supported due to copyright resctictions of DVD-Audio and SACD. You have to use the 5.1 ANALOGUE channel output. It plays through the TV usng the HDMI connection just fine, just not the receiver withou the additional analogue connection.
The options available to you through the setup menu should fit anyone.
this player didn't take long to set up and just start watching movies.
Anything new is gonna take a little getting used to and is to be expected, but so far only having this a week or two i've never been happier with a dd player. I'm thinking a lot of the picture quality has to do with Oppo's True Life technology video processing which can be turned on or off. I reccomend keeping it on by all means.
Customer Review: Great Player, Not For Samsung DLPs Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased the Oppo DV-981 on April 26th. The player arrived in optimal condition. Unwrapping the player, it was professionally packed with the utmost sense of quality and care. By the time I had finished removing the player from the packaging, I was convinced of Oppo's dedication to making a fine product.
When hooking the player up, I used incredibly high-quality cables (Monster M-Series 1000 HDMI and M-Series 1000 Digital Coaxial). The player itself is by far the most attractive in terms of physical appearance. A brushed aluminum black body with chrome accents. If that isn't enough, this style is complimented with a rich and bright blue backlit LCD screen and a shifting red/blue power button.
Powering the player, the menu is very user-friendly and filled with all the appropriate options for enthusiasts and beginners alike. The sound quality from this player is incredibly spacious and filled with the details that explain a player squeezing every ounce of fidelity from the disc. While I'm sure that other televisions would benefit greatly from this product, mine is not one of them. DO NOT BUY THIS PLAYER IF YOU HAVE A SAMSUNG DLP. I saw the warnings on Oppo's site; I was skeptical and failed to heed them. This player creates depth in video, yes, but the macroblocking (big blocks of color that look like digital artifacts) is unbearable. The reason for its existence? A video signal being processed not only by the Faroudja in the player, but also the Faroudja in the TV. Any non-DLP set will shine with this player.
I was sad to return the player as its appearance was awe-inspiring, however, I am forced (due to obsession) to pay more for the Toshiba HD-XA2 which is supposed to yield phenomenal results (Silicon Optix Reon HQV chip huray!).
Customer Review: OPPO-tunity Knocks With This DVD Player.... Summary: 5 Stars
I know, bad pun, but it got your attention didn't it?? My story on this amazing DVD player. Recently bought a LG 37" LCD TV with 720p max picture, and already have a home theater sound system. I've heard about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, and am not interested in either due to the fact I didn't want to rebuy my DVD collection from scratch. After hearing about upconverting DVD players, and the name Oppo ("what's an Oppo?" I asked), I decided to check on specs and reviews before possibly plunging in to buy this DVD player.
After reading all these glorifying reviews here and elsewhere, I decided to purchase one from Amazon. Took two days to get, kudos to Amazon. Very nice packaging, easy to read instruction manual, easy set up (comes with HDMI cable), I hooked it up to my TV and home theater system. The picture quality is outstanding, however, this isn't HD DVD or Blu-Ray quality, but it comes very close in my opinon. Also, remember that the quality is only as good as the DVD source (just like CD's), so older DVD's may not shine as well as ones made recently, but even the older ones benefit some with the upconversion. The tray seems somewhat flimsy, and the remote looks kinda busy, but the proof is in the picture quality. Went through different DVD's like Pixar (Toy Story, Incredibles, etc), as well as King Kong, Terminator, Harry Potter, etc., and the picture was brilliant with colors, detail, and sharpness. Played two PAL discs I had with no problems, but if you do have any problems, there is a region free hack for you to convert the player to region free, ask Oppo, or look within the review section. So, for $229 plus free shipping at Amazon, take the Oppo-tunity to purchase this DVD player. Well worth the bucks, and highly recommended.
Customer Review: Best DVD player I've ever owned Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little apprehensive about ordering a DVD player online from a company I had never heard about. But I'm glad I did. This is an awesome DVD player.
I recently bought a Sharp 42" 1080p LCD HDTV and I didn't want to take part in the format wars going on between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Plus those players are just to expensive right now. I decided to buy an upconverting DVD player that would convert regular DVDs to 1080p. I have to say that the Oppo produces images so fine that I personally can't tell them apart from real HD movies.
And the sound coming from the 5.1 analog outputs is so fabulous that I'm enjoying my SACD and DVD-Audio discs with new appreciation. I couldn't get sound from the digital coax output, though. I'm not blaming the player at this point; perhaps it's the cable or a loose connection somewhere. But I'm not too concerned right now since the 5.1 analog gives superior sound quality anyway, being uncompressed.
This player plays almost every kind of disc you can imagine (except the true HD discs). I had to have one that would play SACD and DVD-A, and this one does the trick.
Oppo even packages this player in classy style. The player comes in the box packaged in a nifty cloth pouch fastened with Velcro and the Oppo logo on the front. It wasn't simply wrapped in foam or plastic and fastened with tape. Not a real big deal, but I appreciate the extra little extras Oppo gives, including the HDMI cable that is provided.
It's a little more expensive than most regular DVD players, but it does so much more, and it does it so well. It's worth the price. I highly recommend it.
Customer Review: Not worth the money or trouble for setting it up Summary: 1 Stars
Heard wonderful reviews on amazon about this OPPO player so I ordered one, it came very fast and well presented, plus lucky me, it offered me a free HDMI cable. After fiddling with the menu and setting the player for my Sony 40XBR4 LCD TV, I got a very very nice picture, especially when compared to my five year old Sony DVD player.
What I liked about the Sony, was that it remembered where it left off, when you turned the unit off, for as many as 6 DVD's. So one day, I am in Walmart and I see the same player, but with an HDMI output for $75.00. On the spur of the moment I got it and set it up next to my OPPO. Surprise, my Sony is giving me an identical picture as the OPPO, plus it boots up faster, and I don't have to remember to eject the tray, so that it remembers where I left off; The OPPO only remembers where you left off if you remember to open the eject tray, before shutting the unit down.
So there you have it, $229 including an HDMI cable, or $75 and buy your own HDMI cable. For my needs it was a no brainer, I just hope I can save some of you folks the extra $140.00, assuming you need an HDMI cable.
The Sony does not have the Faroudja chip, but believe me, I fiddled with the sharpness settings of the OPPO and could not get a better picture than with the Sony. As for any wise guy who thinks I need glasses, I just got a new pair last week, and I stand by the picture statement I made.
Another bonus with the Sony, I can actually turn the TV on/off and other adjustments with my DVD player's remote! SAVE you dough, OPPO is probably great, but you need not spend that much.
