Set up was a breeze, and *it does* make many standard dvd's look like they are HD. In fact, some disc look better than some of the HD programming from the cable company(cable companies love compression!). It's not blu-ray, but it does a fantastic job up-converting standard disc. I should mention that I am using this on a 50" plasma also.
I know after buying this, I won't be so quick to shell out more money for a blu-ray player considering the picture looks fantastic and I don't see any real need to spend money on the same titles that I already own. They look better on this Oppo than my prior JVC and Sony dvd players.
I noticed a few reviews that felt Oppo wasn't going to have any firmware upgrade to this two year old product, but there is a firmware upgrade as of July 8th 2008 at Oppodigital(dot)com
Glad I bought it.
***Update***(11/16/2008): There is also a firmware update from August 6th and this update corrected the fact that this player would play some hybrid SACD's as regular CD's. Since I performed this upgrade, the player plays my hybrid disc as multi-channel disc, as they should be. I'd definitely recommend upgrading the firmware at oppodigital to correct the faults of this player, especially to take full advantage of SACD's multi-channel capability.

Oppo is an amazing brand, and I am SO glad I discovered them. The brand and this unit reeks of quality; even the packaging is impressive.
I wanted to get the most out of my new HDTV, and the addition of this unit made all the difference. It certainly delivers, without sending you into sticker shock. This unit is a great solution for anyone who doesn't want to duplicate their entire DVD collection with overpriced HDDVDs. This breathes new life into your old DVD collection without compromising on quality. Definitely the "sweet spot" when it comes to cost and image quality.
I'm sure I could tweak settings and improve a few things, but I'm happy as a clam with a very basic setup.
This unit is currently mated to an Olevia 47" LCD (high altitude prohibits plasma), an older high-end Pioneer home theater system with Cerwin-Vega Redline 12" front and 10" rear speakers, a Yamaha subwoofer, and a JBL 6" triple-speaker center.
Run your movies through a good theater system with this Oppo, using HDMI, and you have a top-notch theater experience in the comfort of home.
I only wish Oppo made a Universal remote for this unit. That would be the frosting on the cake.
An excellent value for the money; you won't find anything better in quality for anywhere near the price.

This well footnoted book makes a much needed critique of organized religion across most denominations today. Historical roots of many common practices are explored and several conclusions are inferred. In my 30 years of pastoral ministry, I share many of the observations and concerns made by the authors. I do believe that in their zeal to confront error they also error in many of their conclusions, in fact, "throwing the baby out with the bath water". I believe we can drive into a ditch on either side of the road of God's truth- In the end a ditch is still a ditch.
The Biblical model for the New Testament church is clear; they meet corporately together, devoted themselves to apostolic doctrine and they cultivated communion and deep fellowship "from house to house" (Acts 2-4). It's not one or the other - it's both!

The up-converting capability on this unit is ... in no other word ... AWESOME! This was an excellent choice and I would recommend it to anyone that wants to enjoy their existing DVD collection with spectacular HD quality. This unit and my Sony XBR are a phenomenal combination.
