Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD

Customer Review: Another positive review.
Summary: 5 Stars

Set up was a breeze, and *it does* make many standard dvd's look like they are HD. In fact, some disc look better than some of the HD programming from the cable company(cable companies love compression!). It's not blu-ray, but it does a fantastic job up-converting standard disc. I should mention that I am using this on a 50" plasma also.

I know after buying this, I won't be so quick to shell out more money for a blu-ray player considering the picture looks fantastic and I don't see any real need to spend money on the same titles that I already own. They look better on this Oppo than my prior JVC and Sony dvd players.

I noticed a few reviews that felt Oppo wasn't going to have any firmware upgrade to this two year old product, but there is a firmware upgrade as of July 8th 2008 at Oppodigital(dot)com

Glad I bought it.

***Update***(11/16/2008): There is also a firmware update from August 6th and this update corrected the fact that this player would play some hybrid SACD's as regular CD's. Since I performed this upgrade, the player plays my hybrid disc as multi-channel disc, as they should be. I'd definitely recommend upgrading the firmware at oppodigital to correct the faults of this player, especially to take full advantage of SACD's multi-channel capability.

Customer Review: Just Say OPPO!

Just got this unit last week and I am very impressed with its elegance and performance. First of all, I have never seen an electronic device packaged with such TLC. Easy to open, clean packing materials; a nice little black protective cover wrapped lovingly around the unit; easy-to-ready user manual in a zip-loc bag. These are the little things that indicate that this company is trying to take that proverbial "extra step" to build a good reputation and ensure customer loyalty. It works guys!

The look of the unit is very sleek and pleasing. But the best thing about it is its performance. It plays everything I throw at it and it does it almost flawlessly.

To test the upconvert feature, I popped in "Star Wars: Episode I," and WOW! A clear improvement over my old JVC player. It really brings out the best in our Panasonic 42" plasma! Our plasma only ED, but the improvement in picture quality makes it seem like we upgraded to HD! Makes me want to watch all my DVD's again!

After setting the Region code to "0", I tried one of my Region 2 DVDs and ol' "OPPO" played it like a champ! OPPO also played DiVX with ease, along with mp3, jpg and many others.

So, consider me another of the OPPO converts! We no longer call it the DVD player...we just say "OPPO"!

There are already so many great reviews that I don't need to add much but I wanted to put in a vote. This worked right out of the box. My set up is a Samsung HDTV flat panel 40". I needed a new player because I needed to play DivX which my Sony NS75H did not support. One big attraction of the Oppo was the ability to read PAL and convert to NTSC. In this regard it played some European pal DVDs flawlessly once I set up the region code as reported. The remote is awesome. The player responds instantly which is a delight after using the Sony. There are also several slow motion speeds which get you down to almost 2 frames a second which very nice. Another nice feature is the ability to access the setup menu and make changes while playing your DVD.
By the way the packaging is a work of art. I've never seen anything like it. I'm also glad to hear that this is a US company.
After using it now for several days the only downside that I see, is that it does seem to get very hot. This is particularly noticable if it's on another component that generates heat.
The only other drawback is that I miss a the feature of remmbering where your place on a DVD even if it was played several DVDs ago. No ability to advance frame by frame although slowest slow is pretty good.

This is one unbelievable player. I also own the Toshiba Hd player. I love both. My main problem was to change region i wanted it to play region 2 DVD. I applied the hack but didn't work for me right away
Here is the hack
Firmware update may remove the region hack. Region free:
1) No disc
2) Press Set Up
3) Press 9210
4) Press 0
5) Press Set Up. Done! Supposedly

To access the zone changing option I had to press the setup key on the
Remote than go to the preference page. Under TV type choose auto first than enter the 9210 a menu will pop up. Choose zero. It will play all regions. Click again on setup. Reboot your player go back to the preference page and choose NTSC (if you have an NTSC TV). Leaving the player on auto gave me a black picture on my high def TV with region 2 DVD's.
When I changed it to NTSC under the DVD player's menu. It could play all regions and I could see the picture.
This thing is awesome. I give this product 15 stars
Played xvid with subs in a flash. Just perfect.
I used to own the Phillips dvp 642/37 and trust me this one will blow your mind away. The Phillips was a dud when it came to xvid
You might encounter or not this problem to change region. I did

I bought the Oppo based on impressive customer reviews for the up-conversion capabilities after no luck with the Denon 1930 which also had good reviews. The Oppo seemed to be a step up from the Denon but I still couldn't justify the expense of the purchase and still having so much macroblocking in the dark areas of the picture and just an overall substandard upconversion picture that I was looking for. I have a new 65 in Mitsubitshi 1080P TV that performs flawlessly with my HD Comcast so I know what the TV is capable of displaying. So I broke down and took the Nestea plunge and returned it and bought the flagship Toshiba XA2 HD player. Yes I was planning on waiting it out but after buying this Toshiba, none of the others come close with the up-conversion quality as most of my standard DVD's look substantially better and the bonus of being able to play HD DVDs which is also presents a beautiful picture is a plus. The only problem I had with the Toshiba was out of the box the remote just wouldn't work properly; it was responsive only 20% of the time. So after replacing the batteries it's fine. All in all for a few hundred extra dollars I can justify my purchase. I am happy with the Toshiba for sure; even at the extra expense.
