Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OCZ Rally2 USB 2.0 8 GB Flash Drive - OCZUSBR2DC-8GBCustomer Review: Good construction but flaky performance with my iMac Summary: 2 Stars
I had a bad experience with 2 Sandisk Cruzer 32GB flash drives and searched for an alternative. These OCZ flash drives had good reviews so I decided to give them a try.
The OCZ Rally2 is constructed well. They have an aluminum housing that feels secure unlike the plastic housings that many other flash drives have. The cap does not fit very snugly and when you take the cap off, it does not fit on the other end of the flash drive so you must be sure you don't misplace the cap or you'll lose it. And misplacing small caps must be relatively common because the OCZ website has a link to order replacement caps. Brilliant.
There is a bright orange LED activity light and it is extremely bright. I would say obnoxiously bright. I'll be looking for some sort of plastic or rubber cap or cover to place over the flashing LED since it is so distracting.
Now let me talk about the wacky experience I had with the OCZ flash drive. I opened the package and put the drive into a USB port on my PC laptop. I loaded about 60 mp3 files onto it. The mp3's played as expected in Windows Media Player and on another device.
Then I plugged the flashdrive into my iMac with OS 10.5.7. It failed to mount. I ran Disk Utility and while it was recognized in Disk Utility, it still would not mount. I attempted to Verify the drive in Disk Utility, but it would not verify either. When I tried to format the drive in the iMac, I got an error that said the drive could not be unmounted. This was too weird and made no sense. I called OCZ tech support and they were not able to provide any useful advice except to say that I could return it for exchange.
I took the flash drive back to the PC and reformatted it. I put it back in the iMac and this time it mounted with no problem. I loaded some mp3 files onto it and filled it nearly to capacity and then plugged it into and ejected it repeatedly in both the PC and the iMac. It seemed to be fine.
I felt that that the data transfer rates, both reading and writing were fairly zippy compared to a Lexar 2GB flashdrive that I have.
Until I've had the OCZ flash drive for a while, I won't feel very confident about the reliability of it since I had issues with it earlier in the day. I've got to say that the issue of bullet-proof reliability and performance with flash drives is still very much up in the air. I would never entrust important data to a flash drive without a reliable backup or two of the data.
I'd have to give the OCZ 8GB flash drive a provisional rating of 2 stars. If it proves to be reliable I would give it a 4 star rating. The fact that the cap can't be stored on the other end of the flash drive, plus the obnoxiously bright LED prevent it from getting a 5 star rating. Should it prove to be reliable in future months. I will update this review.
