Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of OCZ Rally2 Dual Channel 16 GB Flash USB 2.0 Flash Drive OCZUSBR2DC-16GB

Customer Review: Tiny, fast and durable...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the fastest USB drives I've ever owned. But what's really important to me is the size. There are other drives out there that perform slightly faster than this one but they are all fat and bulky and hard to use with adjacent usb ports. This is the slimmest USB drive I've seen, yet its still amazingly fast and durable. It's not infinitely durable - mine finally died after 9 months of heavy use, but that's still nearly a record for me because it represents about 100 drops onto concrete and a few runs through the clothes washer along with some serious freezing weather. :)

If it's any consolation, once mine died I did a hard search of all possible alternatives, and ended getting the exact same one again, mostly because no other high speed drives have this slim form factor. The 64GB supposedly has faster write speeds, but Amazon doesn't seem to carry it at this time.

UPDATE: I just got my replacement, and it's the one with the newer controller chip and the blue light (vs the old orange light.) I basically use my drive as a floppy disk, and I found this new controller results in faster reads but much slower writes. I do a representative test by reading and writing a single, 8GB file: (this is on a 17" MBP)

Write speed - 13.60 MB/second (9 minutes, 19 seconds)
Read speed - 30.53 MB/second (4 minutes, 9 seconds)
Avg (read+write)/2 = 22 MB/second (13 minutes, 28 seconds)

The read speed is incredible - about as fast as a USB 2.0 external hard drive, but the write speed is slow enough that on average, this drive is a bit slower than my old one. The new controller might explain why we're seeing more performance drives now with very slow write speeds.

The slower write speed is disappointing, but I'm still over all pretty happy with it - it's still among the higher performing drives out there.

Customer Review: Fast but a bit flimsy
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a nice fast drive. I mostly use it for moving around large DVD/HDD image files (installs, VMs, etc.) and it's fast enough to move things in and out without too much wait time. I keep it in my laptop bag - it doesn't feel sturdy enough for the keychain.

Problems:
1. The cap is too easy to slide off - I'm pretty certain I'll loose it soon :-)
2. Flimsy construction. Yes, it has an aluminium body, but it feels very thin and fragile. The main board assembly (the circuit board with the memory and the usb connector) is loose inside the aluminium body, you can feel and see it moving around in there and it feels like it's about to snap. Maybe it's just the one I got (anybody has the same problem?). I think I'll pry out the main board somehow and just fill it with silicone or something...

Other than that - it's a good drive, so if you are not too clumsy and looking for a big fast drive - I'd recommend it.

However, if you tend to drop stuff (and then step on it ;-), if you want to keep it on your key chain (you'll loose the cup for sure and it feels like it won't survive for more than a week) - look somewhere else.

Customer Review: OCZ Rally 2 16GB Review
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the Rally 2 16GB usb drive for about a month now. It has performed extremely well. I had no expections of this usb drive as the only other one I have is a PNY 1GB (purchased roughly 3 years ago), and wasn't sure what to expect as far as speed. I used the PNY stricly as a backup. I needed the Rally 2 because I received a new laptop from my employer, to replace the original laptop issued to me. I discovered that, with personal files and music included, the amount I needed to transfer totalled 9.3GB. The Rally 2 allowed me to transfer all files in one step, and it only took about 2 hrs to copy everything to the drive. I have been using the Rally 2 as alternate storage, not just a backup. I purchased this drive, knowing about the common problems with usb drives and losing their caps. I find if I just put the cap back on slowly, it seems to stay on firm enough. I am completely happy with this drive thus far .

Customer Review: 16GB Flash Drive
Summary: 3 Stars

First off let me say that OCZ makes very good products, and I will continue to buy products from them in the future.

This seemed like a very good product until I decided to write this review and tried to pull the drive out of a USB slot so I could plug it into my laptop for a speed test. The aluminum casing came right off and exposed the internals. I tried to push it back on...no luck.

Since it still works, I was able to run some benchmarks:
When it was about 2/3 full: ~29MB/s read and ~15MB/s write.
After formatting: ~30MB/s read and ~21MB/s write.

Other then the build quality, this product is decent. The speed could be a little faster, since they do advertise up to 32-35MB/s (read). However,it does what I need it to.

I opened a ticket with OCZ, let's see how they deal with it. The product does come with a lifetime warranty.

Customer Review: Solid USB flash drive
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking around for days before deciding on the OCZ Rally2. It was this brand vs. Sandisk vs. Corsair. Now that I have this drive in hand, I don't regret it one bit. The build feels solid vs. some of the plastic ones that I have. It's small enough to be easily put in one of those small change pockets on jeans. I copied some files to the drive and it was speedy. I didn't do any tests or benchmarks, but only time will tell if this drive is fast and reliable. I like the bright light at the end of the stick and the end cap is sufficient. It was also nice to have the neck chain, but the hole to thread the string is so small, it was hard to thread it through. No biggie, I don't even use that anyways. Anyhow, if you are looking for a solid USB flash drive, this is it.
