Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Nintendo DS Lite Crimson & Black with Brain Age 2

Customer Review: Perfect starter set for newbies or anyone
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I'm not a gamer. I don't have kids. I've never owned a Nintendo or any other game system aside from the Atari 5600 (which tells you how old *I* am!) although I played other game systems here and there. However, deep down I kind of wanted a DS because it looked like a fun way to pass time at the airport, while commuting, on lunch breaks, etc., but the other versions didn't appeal to me. They looked too kiddy-like and plastic (aka cheap). I also didn't know there were any "adult" games out there. And then.... Nintendo came out with this package. A new color scheme, packaged with Brain Age 2, a stylish case and the system suddenly appeals to ALL those people who may have felt foolish buying the other ones. I admit it, I was sold. Love at first sight. A GENIUS move on Nintendo's part. (To even further prove their point, I also purchased two games along with this set so I'd have plenty to do- Sega Casino and Mario Kart.) I have to say, I'm loving this thing. It's loads of fun, easy to use, very portable, no complicated learning curve, no difficult setup or anything. Just pop in a game and go. Brain Age 2 is great (I want to get the first one now); I discovered there's a lot I don't know! Sega Casino is entertaining and Mario Kart is just plain fun :) I plan on trying out many more games and enjoying this for a long time... at least until they come out with another Limited Edition version that I have to have, LOL
Definitely a good way to get into the DS if you've been on the fence about it, as I was. Or even if you just want one, it's a great package. It would also make a great gift for just about anyone, young or old. Heck, I'm thinking of getting my parents one for Christmas!

Customer Review: Crimson/Onyx DSL with Brain Age 2
Summary: 5 Stars

The DSL is the same old DSL as far as the electronics and all go. But the cool thing is the color and the feel. The Crimson/Onyx deco is rockin. I've got three other DSLs (white, black and pink) that the entire family bang on all the time. The black one used to be my staple (Pokemon Pearl all the way baby). This one has replaced it as my fav. Some details; the Crimson lid seems to be painted that color. Time will tell as the wear on it begins. Also the Onyx, bottom portion of the DSL seems to be in a matte finish unlike every other DSL there is. If you feel your two shoulder buttons on the standard DSL you'll get the idea of the matte finish I'm talking about. Brain Age 2 is a great little title for the system that's really just more Brain Age fun. If you liked BA, you'll love BA2. For details on those two games check individual title reviews. One other thing that comes with this set is a nice 2007 Nintendo catalog that I've never seen anywhere else. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about it. A case, you get a 'special' Nintendo DSL Crimson/Onyx case. It's some sort of synthetic black material on the outside that resembles leather and has nice red stitching around it. The snap buckle has the DS logo on it and the inside is a nice soft crimson material. Has elastic to hold the DS in place. I took mine out of the box, looked at it and put it back. Not really much to it. Your mileage may vary. This set is not really any kind of deal. If you add up the prices it's about the same as getting the DSL and BA2 individually but hey, the only reason you'll get it anyway is because of the cool deco! :D

Customer Review: Beautiful Color Combo, Brain Age 2 & Free Case
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this as a gift for my cousin, and it was the perfect choice. The matte black with glossy crimson red is a beautiful color combo. I would have prefered this color combo for myself, but I already own a black DS. The bundle also includes a very stylish case with 3 game slots. Personally, I never keep my DS in a case because it really doesn't need one. The system is incredibly sturdy and the screen isn't exposed unless your playing it. But the case is essentially free with the bundle, and the game slots are quite handy. And of course, Brain Age 2 is included, which i love. It's harder and a little more polished than the first Brain Age, a really great piece of software. The Brain Age series is an awesome and unique tool for people who enjoy training their brain. But in my experience, Big Brain Academy (the other nintendo brain series) is more fun, especially for younger kids and people who don't normally enjoy brain games. When i bought this bundle for my cousin, i also bought her Big Brain Academy, Clubhouse Games, & New Super Mario Brothers. There are hundreds of other awesome games for the DS, some other recommendations- Picross, Tetris, Planet Puzzle League, Kirby's Canvas Curse, Mario Kart, Meteos, Metroid Prime Hunters, Hotel Dusk, Sim City, Theme Park, Pokemon, Nintendogs, Mario 64 and tons more. There truly are games for people of all ages and all types, that's one of my favorite things about the DS. This DS bundle is great, especially the beautiful color combo, which is supposed to be limited to this bundle only. I would highly recommend it, as a gift for someone or for yourself.

Customer Review: Crimson/Black w/Brain Age 2
Summary: 5 Stars

My five star rating is for the DS itself. The four star rating is for the bundle of the crimson/black DS, Brain Age 2, and case. This DS is very good looking; however, the glossy red top will show fingerprints. The matte black bottom is good because it's less likely to slip in your hands, as another reviewer stated. I don't use a screen protector, but I haven't noticed any scratches yet, and I use the stylus a lot. I can't yet attest to its durability, since I've only had it three months and have yet to drop it.

The case isn't really that great. Its main advantages are that it looks sort of like a woman's wallet, and the DS can be played while in the case, though that's a little awkward. The disadvantage is that the DS isn't completely covered by the case as it would be with other cases on the market, so dirt and liquids could get into the sides and damage the DS. The case isn't so nice that it would be mistaken for leather, either. Also, the game pockets on it are very tight, as other reviewers have noted.

The Brain Age 2 game is not as entertaining as I thought it might be. The "Dr. K" stuff on it is sometimes intrusive and often annoying. I've used it for only a few weeks and have already almost gotten my "brain age" down to the optimal 20.

At $149.99, this was a pretty good deal.

Customer Review: Nintendo cheapens out on the Crimson/Black DS Lite
Summary: 3 Stars

I was so excited to received the new Crimson & Black DS Lite. I even sold my Onyx one. When I started using it, I noticed right away that the screen quality was different. When you tilted it forward or back, visibility would be far worse. This was not a problem with the previous models. I wondered if it was just in my head, so I did a search online and found articles reporting this same exact problem.

As it turns out, Nintendo did purchase cheaper LCD screens for their new models. These screens are considerably worse than the Onyx and other color models and led me to returning this product.

The Crimson and Black model does look very nice though. I personally did not like the back of the player. It has a rough feeling, compared to the glossy back of the onyx and is not as compfortable to use. Also, what was Nintendo thinking with the actual packaging? There's no easy way of opening it. I had to rip through the box in order to get to the bundle.

While it's a nice bundle on paper, I advise you to stay away from this cheapened version. It's really a shame.
