Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Next Generation Remote Control Extender

Customer Review: Best Kept Secret..thats why its still soo cheap...!
Summary: 5 Stars

Simply the best remote extender available..and at the $30 range far superior to anything readily available to us do-it your-selfers' and NON A/V techs...

I purchased 2 of these back in July while preparing myself for a new home with lots of walls in between my tivo and I...so after checking all the reviews on what feels like every possible blog, review and e-electronics site...I came back to this "no-name"(at least for me) remote extender...I purchased 2 not knowing the real distance this thing would carry signals; so getting 2 was more speculation on my part for this unit than necessity; in the end, I actually needed 2 anyway, but not because of distance...but because of remotes..

My setup consists of 3 tivos(series 2 & series 3(THX), an HD cable box(sci-atl) and a remote ready A/V Composite/S-Video switch all of which in one way or another feed 3 tivos throughout the house...using 2 remotes(a Harmony 550 and a SONY Rmx-a4000)...little did I know that the 2 extenders would be needed to effectively work these 2 specific remotes in my case...

I needed the extender so I would not have to purchase additional tivos(which is silly to begin with) and so I would be able to utilize all my tivos from different rooms to different TV's...Yes I had to run a ton of cable but that effort is in itself worthless if you cant change channels and inputs remotely...Us tivo/DVR owners know that adding more units only creates headache, cost and frustration when programming shows and having to watch some here, some there and some over-there cause your shows are all on different units...

So as it goes I setup the remotes using only one extender but both batteries(and sleeves) from 2 packages...(the extender comes with 2 batteries but only 1 sleeve(AA/AAA adapter) so in order to use 2 remotes you need another sleeve, which is sold seperately but only $10 or so cheaper than buying another entire unit...thus buying 2 whole units....

The harmony worked flawlessly, with the jumper(inside globe set to A) and regardless of battery internal position(read other reviews); while the SONY did not work at all...so I setup the other globe and after trying every feasible jumper position and battery combination I came back with jumper set to "short range" with middle battery positioning...this allowed the Sony remote to change through walls but with some caveats. For one thing the globe had to be alot(within 2-3 ft) closer to the tivos, and if I was in the same room of the globes, I had to cover the IR of the sony remote(with my hand, or put it facing down into the couch, sometimes literally touching the couch)in order for it to work. Keep in mind I have 2 globes setup, although they are all in the same room the first is ideally set to work with the Harmony and sits 10 ft from the tivos(on a bookcase above everything) where as the second is set to work with the Sony and sits slightly above and behind the tivos(but within 2ft of all of them).

I found that using the IR mouse that came with the extender helped with controlling my AC unit(forgot to mention that earlier) and the other mouse to control my TV and switch and Series 3 as well...let me explain..the mouse is a hard wired extender of the wireless globe extender..this I believe is for those hard to reach units that are buried somewhere in the back of an AV shelf..In any case I found that the mouse could be utilized on more than one AV component if properly placed but it is severly sight limited and not very powerful at all..SOLUTION...For all you tivo owners with the extra purpler-ended IR cables just lying around or being used as rope..they work perfetly and better than the included mouse with the extender...and for that matter, you can use adapters and add what seems like endless amounts of IR cables(mouses, mouses', mouse's or is that mice in this case)...to hardwire whatever you want to the extender...In my case I used one original mouse for an AC unit and on the other globe, I attached the TIVO IR cable and positioned so it could blast the TV, the series 3 and a remote switch...

Just a note, the series 3 as cutting edge as it seems to be, has a limited remote range or badly placed IR sensor..in that my 3 y/o Humax Tivo is the same distance from the series 3 which is the same distance from the Extender Globe(2ft) and the series 3 simply does not respond to the globe...my solution was to hard wire the series 3 with one end of a tivo cable attached to the globe...now I'm changing channels from the freaking shower, on the cusp of electrocuting myself with 4 AA's. Im going to push it and change some channels outside in the rain...or maybe the pool(if I ever have one that is)...or underwater with the remote in a ziplock...yeahhhhhh

NOTE:
Instructions suck...customer support good luck(there's a site http://www.nextgenerationhomeproducts.com/) but I don't know how supporty they really are...the instructions included are lacking to say the least...and theres no knowledge base of remotes that do and don't work all in one place on any particular site I know of...but a little field testing as in my case has garnered a wealth of what to do's and not do, in my case...

Keep in mind this is the same remote extender they sell on weaknees.com(tivo people wink and a knod, am I right, am I right)..and thats good enough for me...as they are a wealth of knowledge and superior customer service and product advancement...I have never bought anything from them, but I sure ask a lot of questions...and get an answer everytime...

Sorry for length...but you got this far so..move on..and get over it!

Description of Next Generation Remote Control Extender

HI Speed chip sets works MHZConvert existing IR remote to digital RF by replacing 1 battery in a remote with the battery transmitterControl 2 same-brand components independently from anywhere in the houseWorks with most AA and AAA remotesReceiver has built-in chargerAvailable in 433 MHz or 418 MHz frequenciesIncludes single-eye IR emitter and 2 2/3 AA specially sized rechargeable batteries

Infrared remotes are generally limited to line-of-sight operation and shorter ranges. This deivce from NextGen will "RFize" your IR remote, giving it a range of up to 100 feet, room-to-room control, and the other bonuses of having an RF remote.

NextGen Remote Extender Plus
Effectively change your infrared remote to a more powerful radio-frequency signal.
NextGen Remote Extender Plus Package
Includes base station, two 2/3 AAA rechargeable batteries, RF transmitter, IR emitter, and power supply.
NextGen Remote Extender Plus Batteries and Transmitter
2/3 AAA batteries slide into RF transmitter (and AA adapter if necessary).
How It Works

NextGen includes two rechargeable 2/3-AAA batteries, which slide into their RF transmitter to fit the standard AAA battery compartment on your exisitng remote. An adapter is also included for AA compartments.

Replace one of your remote's batteries with this device, and it picks up the hint of radio-frequency signals emitted by IR remotes, amplifies it, and sends it to the base station. The base station then emits the IR signal, effectively turning your IR remote into an RF model.

The base station has a built-in charger for powering up the custom batteries.

The Results

This device lets you go from room-to-room and control your components from up to 100 + feet away, with no direct line-of-sight needed. It even works through closet doors and closed entertainment system cabinets.

Unlike other remote control extenders, there's no need to attach anything to the front of your remote, or to be limited to using it in one room. And by simply installing extra battery transmitters you can convert as many remotes as you like--works with virtually every remote control.

What's in the Box

Remote Extender Base Station, Two 2/3 AAA Rechargeable Batteries, Power Supply. 3 and 6 eye emitters, a stand alone USB charger, and additional transmitters are also available but sold separately.
