Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Netgear FVS336G ProSafe Dual WAN GigaBit SSL VPN FirewallCustomer Review: Keep up with firmware updates Summary: 4 Stars
I have two of these units that I have connected via VPN and one other site in the UK. I have had some up's and down's with these units but for the most part I am pretty happy with the features and functions.
Word of advice to anyone/everyone looking at getting one of these units, make sure you keep up to date on firmware releases this is critical.
For point to point VPN connections I have had great success with other Netgear devices (excluding an older unit FS316), the FS316 would drop connectivity every 24hrs for no reason.
However connectivity between two FVS336G has been rock solid.
SSL connectivity has been disappointing, both with Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS/X systems, Netgear has finally updated the firmware to support Snow Leopard, although I have not got this working correctly in spite of several attempts.
Load balancing is not true load balancing but rather works better as a failover solution. I have two Road Runner Business Class modems connected to both WAN 1 and WAN 2, you have to configure which traffic you want routed out of which port. ([...] on WAN 1 or www.amazon.com on WAN 2 etc), the load balancing configuration can be somewhat of a hit or miss. On prior versions of the firmware if you made any changed to the load balancing config (edit/remove an item), the Router had to be rebooted (not so good), although how often do you need to make these changes once you are up and running? For my case its not too often and I have not seen any issues with the latest firmware.
Overall I am happy with these units, customer support is also hit or miss, the email support from Netgear is less than stellar to say the least I have spent many hours going back and forth re-stating the same comments/questions. Often with less than useful answers. Telephone support is somewhat better, at least for the initial support timeline you get for free. I did purchase the additional 3yr support (from amazon), this is an amazing difference in responding to questions and issues. Shame all support at Netgear is not like this.
Netgear are just about to launch a new V2 version of this unit, according to my understanding there is no functional feature diff between the new version and the older version, other than some physical changes, port location etc. The V2 comes with a power adapter rather than a direct power connection. Its my feeling that the older approach for power is better rather than having to deal with yet another power supply (which only has a 1yr war).
Speed Throughput is fantastic, no issues at all. These units wok very well, once you get over the interface and update the firmware on a regular basis.
I liked my first one enough I bought a second after 2 years for a remote location we have. Thanks to the VPN connectivity we can transfer files back and forth without any fuss.
