Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR WNR834B-100NAS Wireless N RouterCustomer Review: Awful... crashes continually... need to return ASAP Summary: 1 Stars
This is an awful product. My setup is mixed - some of my PCs have wired Ethernet, others use Netgear RangeMax cards. Whenever a PC tries to connect wirelessly, all connections are killed, the router has to be rebooted, and even our DSL router has to be rebooted. Not the kind of performance you expect from a premium-priced product!
For reference, here's our current network setup -- note that it's all Netgear, meaning that it should work seamlessly.
1. One Netgear wnr834b wireless router, connected to DSL modem, WiFi turned on with WPA2-PSK (AES) enabled.
2. A Netgear gs105 switch (great product), which is connected to the Netgear wnr834b.
3. Two PCs connected to the gs105 switch.
4. One laptop connected to the wnr834b router, using a Netgear RangeMax wn511b card.
Finally, Netgear doesn't offer some basic security settings that Cisco/Linksys offers. These include the ability to make the router's admin page only accessible over SSL wired connections. This is a feature Linksys has had since at least 2003; it's surprising that Netgear hasn't implemented it.
Customer Review: Excellent wireless router, but... Summary: 4 Stars
This is an excellent wireless n router. Signal is great to all my devices and speed is outstanding on my iBook and Intel iMac. I also have a wireless networked printer. Works great with that as well. Setup is easy and for the most part, there are no problems at all... but there is one.
I also have some gaming consoles that I wanted to use it with. Like my old Netgear WGR614, this WNR834M works great with XBOX 360 and the Wii. However, UNLIKE the WGR614, IT COMPLETELY REFUSES TO WORK WITH THE PLAYSTATION 3. Tried updating the firmware for it to see if that might solve the problem. Houston, we have ANOTHER problem. It won't even update for some reason. Groan.
So here's the deal. For a fantastic price you get a terrific router... provided you won't be trying to use it with a Playstation 3. Also, the fact that it won't upgrade (could just be my particular unit) is worth some consideration. Still, if it had worked with the Playstation, I'd be very happy with it.
Customer Review: 2 weeks in, flawless Summary: 5 Stars
I saw a LOT of bad reviews about this product but thought that I'd give it a shot it was only a hundred bucks. I currenly have two computers hooked up wirelessly, one is a new desktop running vista with a WN121T USB adapter hooked into it, the othre is a three year old dell with intel proset 2200 BG. This product took me a grand total of 25 minutes to hook up. I wired my laptop to it, downloaded the latest firmware and it started right up. Let me just say also that, contrary to popular opinion the install wizard works. My network is up and installed for 2 weeks giving me great performance. Three stories up my laptop is connecting perfectly. Benchmarked the speeds on line and felt them to be as quick as wired. Furthermore, the desktop is one floor above the router and is connecting at 200 MBPS. If you use this router and by the appropriate adapter it will work great. Unless this breaks I am very satisfied. Spend the money get all matching components and you will have no issue
Customer Review: Don't Bother Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this router after much research. When I tried to install it, it immediately came back with an error. I tried several times, and even tried to manually install it. Finally after much frustration, I called Netgear. I was told by them that they couldn't help me as my 30 days of free technical help had expired, even though I had only had the router for 2 days! The technical support team is terrible, and won't help unless you give them your credit card so they can charge you for help. I told the technician that my router was only 2 days old, so how could my free technical help have expired? She wasn't the least bit interested in helping me. She only wanted to get me off the phone. After trying to install this router for several hours, I finally gave up and boxed it up and returned it. I then went to Best Buy and purchased a Linksys router, came home and had my system up and running in less than 30 minutes. Don't waste your time and money on this router.
Customer Review: Terrible, Avoid at all costs Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this router about 2 years ago (max) and have problems with it ever since. It is never consistent and there have been tons and tons of times where I would have to reset the router because it decided to stop working at random times. It was very easy to set up but I personally would forgo that for a constantly working router. After 2 years in my home, the router failed to work completely. I had my sister call netgear to see why it decided not to work since we had our internet company come and check out our failed internet (modem was working perfectly fine thus leading to our router as the problem). They informed us that we did not have an "account" with them therefore the root of our no-internet-problem. Well problem solved, right? I'm appalled that they would just brush us off like that especially when I had no idea that we needed a netgear account. I will never, ever buy another product from netgear. Terrible products and even worse customer service.
