Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition

Customer Review: Companies and products to avoid - oh, and BBB rating orf "F"
Summary: 1 Stars

Yes, i'm pretty disgruntled. But i have facts on my side.

From what i have experienced, the WN802T performs quite poorly. I have the luxury of having 3 access points on my home network. I have configured them so they are non-interfering (e.g.; on channels 1,6 and 11) so my test is fairly valid.

Compared to two other G/N APs, one the bundled unit from Verizon with FiOS, my Netgear performs poorly, and inconsistently. Its range is less, at any given range its signal is weaker; and its SSID beacon comes and goes. Furthermore, it seems to periodically fail and requires a full re-boot. For no apparent reason the SSID vanishes, it has no signal strength, and, if you can locate it, it refuses the *(proper, stored) WEP password. none of the others do this.

Maybe this unit is faulty and unusual, but i'll explain why i dont think so. First, i have called netgear, and they simply refuse to support it, claiming that "refurbished units are not entitled to telephone support". Of course, email support has not been helpful either.

So i went digging at the Better Business Bureau. First Netgear stonewalled me with non-answers to my filing. So i called teh BBB. It gets more interesting. NetGear has a huge number of complaints files - 175 in this office. of them, onyl 10 have been resolved. Thsi gives NetGear the BBBs' lowest rating - F. You can fidn the results here:

[...]

The BBB says the following:

"Company Rating F
Our opinion of what this rating means:
We strongly question the company's reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law's licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company's industry is known for its fraudulent business practices."

I think this says it all.

To summarize:

1. my unit works poorly when tested against competing units
2. Netgear refuses to support it
3. netgear refuses to warranty it
4. neatgear has earned an F from the BBB for many similar claims

let the buyer beware.

The WN802T has a Gigabit Ethernet backend for maximum speeds. View larger.
Easy Setup
The WN802T makes it easy for even a novice to set up a wireless network: just plug the included Ethernet cable from your LAN into the device and insert the included CD into any computer on the network, which will provide step-by-step instructions. The WN802T offers a myriad of placement options by including a stand for vertical placement and also a wall-mount kit.

The WN802T employs a web-based interface for configuration for compatibility with any computer with a web browser. The firmware is also upgradeable via the web interface so you can be sure your access point will always be up-to-date.

New Technology Means Blazing Speeds and Backwards Compatibility
The WN802T complies with the latest 802.11n draft specification which allows for speeds up to 300 Mbps; this maximum speed can be achieved when used with other TopDog devices. By utilizing MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) technology, the WN802T has speed and range far surpassing the older 802.11g standard. The preset antennas in the access point ensure that the device is always tuned for optimal performance, and NETGEAR's Wi-Fi Multimedia technology optimizes audio, video, and voice applications.

By using Gigabit Ethernet for the backend, you'll be certain that the access point is receiving data at the highest possible speeds, ensuring the 300 Mbps wireless throughput is not going to waste.

If you still have computers that use 802.11g or 802.11b, don't fret as the access point is backwards compatible with the older wireless standards and can be set so all your computers can connect to the network. The access point will automatically figure out the connection type and work accordingly.

Security Made Easy
NETGEAR's Touchless WiFi Security makes it quick and easy to set up network security on a WiFi network by asking for a passphrase from the user. The WN802T supports WiFi Protected Access (WPA2-PSK, WPA-PSK), and 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption for 802.11b/g networks. Additionally, you can set security through MAC address authentication, allowing only authorized users onto the network. There is also support for 802.1x RADIUS support with EAP TLS, TTLS, and PEAP.

The NETGEAR WN802T RangeMax Next Wireless-N Access Point Gigabit Edition is backed by a 1-year warranty.
