Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR PS121 USB 2.0 Mini Print Server

Customer Review: Made my printer wireless really wireless.
Summary: 4 Stars

I connected this to my HP PSC2410 all in one and then instead of running an ethernet wire to my router which is across the room from the printer, I connected a D-Link DWL-G730AP in client mode to it. This made my printer 100% wireless, and I'm not attached to the printer with any kind of wires whatsoever. I took away one star because it doesn't support scanning on my printer, but its not a big deal because I hardly ever scan anyway, however I would have liked that feature for the rare times that I do scan. Also, if you are installing this on Vista, Netgear has new drivers on their website that are made for Vista so make sure to download and use those. I'm really happy with this purchase because I don't have to use the 30 foot USB extension cable I had running across the floor anymore. Installation went smoothly for me.

Customer Review: Poor Supporting Software and Lack Of Technical Support
Summary: 1 Stars

For the price, the PS121v2 is a good deal. The hardware works as expected but the supporting software may give you a USB error. And if you get this error, NetGear support may have you going in circles. I am running two machines - XP Pro and Vista. The printer is an all-in-one. The PS121v2 requires you install it's client software on each machine - no problem. And to access the non-printer functions (e.g. scan, fax,...), the user reserves the printer (locks access) through this software - no problem for me but possible annoyance for others. But on Windows Vista the software installation produced errors. The software still ran but never allowed me to reserve the printer. And after a week of playing e-mail tag with NetGear, I washed my hands of this device. I gave it away and got a printer with ethernet/wifi built-in.

Customer Review: Works great between frequent crashes
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this Netgear print server based on my experience with their enterprise line (big mistake). The Netgear print server was easily setup and configured with the printer (OkiData 6100 Laser Printer), and I configured the computers on my network to print via the print server. The problem arose when the computers would lose contact with the print server. The only way to get the thing back was to pull the power cord on the print server, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in. After the print server rebooted, it worked fine again. This happened once or more per day which is totally unacceptable to me. If something can't work for months (or more!) between failures/crashes, then I am not interested.

Over-all a lesson learned: Only buy blue (enterprise tier) Netgear equipment.

Customer Review: Disappointing Offering from Netgear
Summary: 1 Stars

I've always been fairly happy with Netgear products. Unfortunately, there's only one word to describe the PS121: junk. The DHCP used for configuration is flaky at best. The unit gets extremely hot, and the quality of the plastic case is very low. The reset button and ACT light on my unit did not function as documented.

But what really surprised me (but probably shouldn't have) was the abhorrent quality of the documentation - both printed and online. The installation docs have brilliant troubleshooting tips like "make sure you can access other places from your computer", and the support website even recommends uninstalling firewalls. In certain cases, the website furiously demands that you "DO NOT call" for support. Unbelievable!

Spend your money elsewhere.

Customer Review: Piece of junk, backed by the WORST customer service in the industry
Summary: 1 Stars

Do NOT buy this product. I have used several wired print servers before, ALL without problem, THIS is the only one I have ever come across that doesn't work well. The print driver repeatedly goes to "sleep" and may or may not wake to print. FORGET about Netgears customer service, unless you like wasting your time. Netgear's policy is, the first THREE responses will be canned ones that have NOTHING to do with your issue, then they bump it to "level 2" who then proceed to waste AT LEAST another week providing more canned responses that indicate they have no idea what they are doing and no training. Well, at least Netgear employs people in 3rd world toilets so they won't have to starve. Buy a different product, this is junk.
