Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop SwitchCustomer Review: Compact charger, well made Summary: 5 Stars
We've figured out how to make switches, so it's no surprise this one just works. There's no fumbling with crossover cables, uplink connections, etc. My Mac shows up as a gigabit connection, my older devices as 100 MB.
The device is compact, low lying and feels very solid. Fanless and draws only 12V and 1A -- it runs cool and needs little power. The power adapter is relatively compact and fits well on the average power strip, using up only a single slot. It's slotted to mount in several orientations and comes with an external ground for a rack mount.
It's a good choice for someone who wants something a cut above the usual consumer grade switch.
Customer Review: Outstanding Summary: 5 Stars
Anyone who has run Cat5e or better cable, done the jack wiring and finished off a clean, in-wall installation has some trepidation about just what transfer speeds you can actually realize when connecting to a gigabit switch. This Netgear switch is simple to set up and delivers the full promised throughput a mixed wire/wireless network with 8 nodes supporting both Macs and PCs. To feed the GS108, expand the number of ports and rout an internet connection from a cable or DSL modem I would strongly recommend Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (Gigabit) MB053LL/A
Customer Review: Been working great Summary: 5 Stars
Don't know a lot about these type of items just know been using a D-Link for the last 4.5 years and it finally died on us. Our internet provider told me to contact the manufacturer but figure it wasn't worth it becuase it has been constantly on since January 2003 so got our monies worth. Expect this to last just as long or longer. What is nice about it is I have more outputs 7 vs 4. Believe we received an increase in speed too because the lap top with a slower processor is faster now and the connection is at 100mbps which takes full advantage of the cable connection. So far everything is working great. Will let you know if it holds up.
Customer Review: BAH! Summary: 2 Stars
Well, it's a great unit but after 2 years of use the capacitors in it blew out and now it's a doorstop. I guess the question is how long should a gigabit switch last? Far as I'm concerned, with the rate of technological advances in the world, something like this ought to last until it's 'old school'. So I'm an unhappy camper. Overall I've always bought Netgear products when there was a choice because I've felt they were well built units. I've got several 'old school' routers/hubs/switches from Netgear that are still working so perhaps this is just a cheap-arsed unit...dunno. I'm off to find a non-Netgear unit to replace the GS108. sigh.
Customer Review: Excellent, affordable gigabit switch -- may need to tweak your settings Summary: 5 Stars
Using the pcattcp benchmarking tool, I find I got speeds of ~11,000 KB/sec using my Netgear 10/100 router. Plugged into my new gigabit switch, I am seeing speeds of ~95,000 KB/sec (the maximum would be 122,000 KB/sec).
For those of you not in IT, you need to make sure your network cards are gigabit-capable, and that the cable throughout your house is Cat 5e or better. There are also some registry tweaks you may need to perform, described at [...]
Netgear makes a solid gigabit switch -- before you complain you're not seeing improvements in speed, you really need to diagnose the rest of your system.
