Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch

Customer Review: Inexpensive, reliable equipment
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using a Netgear 24-port Gigabit switch ( Netgear JGS524NA ProSafe 24-Port Gigabit Rackmount Switch ) for about two years, and added this one in June 2008. Never had any problems, and as others have pointed out, pretty much plug-n-play; with auto uplink and small but readable lights, these are hassle free unmanaged switches. Our network consists of Macs, Linux, Windoze, and NAS boxes -- all seem to play well. I am also a big fan of the metal enclosures as they add a degree of sturdiness that plastic units can't muster. I have used these for portable temporary net expansion and the metal has made a difference in certain mishaps between having a switch and throwing away a broken switch.

Customer Review: Two of them died after 1 year
Summary: 1 Stars

Worked great for about one year. Then the flashing green lights of death that others have documented started. Just thought I'd add my vote to avoid this product. UPDATE TO REVIEW: I originally bought these in March of 2007, the first one died in September 08, the second one died December of 2008. The second failure wasn't as obvious and sat off in an office. The failure mode brought our entire network to a crawl until we found the culprit and unplugged it. I noticed on Netgear's web site that Prosafe products purchased after MAY of 2007, have a lifetime warranty. Leads me to believe they must know they built and sold most of the JUNK prior to May and don't want to correct their problem for those of us who bought back then. That tells me all I need to know about Netgear. It's on to DLink.

Customer Review: Fast, sturdy and durable
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been using this product for about a month (so far). It's metallic construction makes it heavier than other similar products in its category, but it also gives you the feeling of sturdiness and durability, specially if you move it a lot.
The installation is super simple and in my case I had no problem with defective parts (provided power supply and the switch itself). I mounted it to a wall cabinet (indoors) with the phone, cable and Internet services. It serves my home's Ethernet wall ports so it operates 24/7. It will handle a smaller 5-port (Netgear GS105NA) and the other Ethernet based devices at home (VoIP, printer, NAS, 2 desktops and our guests).
It was a bit pricey, but the lifetime warranty and my experience with it so far makes it worth it I believe.

Customer Review: good but could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

i have two of the gs108 switch, one is the version 1 (larger) and one version 2 (shown in the pic), the version 1 has been working for 3 years now and had no problem at all. the version 2 one just quit yestereday.

the symptom was all of the LEDs blinks at the same time (on - off - on), and the computer shows the network cable was unplugged. did a little bit search and it seems this is a quite common problem for this switch, it was caused by two capacitors (6.3v 1000uF), following others steps i replaced them with two 10v 1000uF, and now everything is workig again!

so if you have similar problem, check the capacitors, unless you can wait for netgear send you a replacement. the two capacitors cost about $4, i'd say cheapter than the shipping cost.

Customer Review: Simple, no hassle product that does what it says
Summary: 5 Stars

I especially like the auto-configuration capability of this switch. Any cable plugged in as an up or down link and it works it out. Any speed OK. It's completely auto-sensing.

I didn't realize when I bought it that this product doesn't contain a DHCP server, but fortunately my cable modem does, so that works fine.

I have it installed in a home network containing a cable modem connected to a VOIP (Lingo / D-link) router, connected to this switch. Then at the other end of the house I have a Netgear Wireless-N router connected without using its WAN port so it acts as a dumb hub. That way all my machines are on the same LAN, and it all works fine.

This is much more stable and easier to use than the Netgear wireless router. Recommended.
