Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR GS108 ProSafe 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop SwitchCustomer Review: Extremely fast Summary: 5 Stars
Running 6 PC's, 2 laptops, X-box, phone, printer. T-1 connection with Cat-6 cables using a D-Link DCM-200 Cable Modem.
We couldn't install this the first time because I wanted to put it as the initial entry to our network and piggyback our Linksys router to the Ethernet switch. When we did that, the network didn't see the Internet.
Tech support was helpful (you get 90 days of phone support for free). I was told that the router would have to come first and then the switch. Our router is only 10/100 so I was concerned about having wasted my money to buy a 10/100/1000 switch that was going to have to go thorugh a 10/100 router.
Even though I have done 5-8 computer home LANs for years, I didn't really get switches. I thought they were configured, like routers, first of all. Really, they just turn on and that's it. That's why the installation directions are like nothing!
Meanwhile: I call Tech Support. The off-shore tech guy assured me that the 10/100/1000 would adapt to the 10/100 router input and increase the signal speed to the capability of whatever network cards we have in our computers.
---> He was right. Any computer with a gig network card gets gig transfer rates.
We've had the switch about a month. I am a web designer and don't notice too much difference but our sons' game ping went from the 40's-60's into the low 20's.
We have had such an increase in speed that our cable was not delivering even service (my husband and I didn't notice but Warcraft showed it).
Our older son called Comcast and they sent someone out. The technician said that our new configuration, specifically the switch, was demanding more than that coaxial cable could handle.
Since we pay for the T1 service, he said he would make sure we got that speed. He ran a new line that is dedicated (doesn't share the TV any more) and is a heavier gauge (correct terminology?) so that we can make full use of our T1 and our new switch.
Want to know if this switch really makes a difference? The boys' pings are in the single digits now.
