Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR GS105 ProSafe 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch - 10/100/1000 MbpsCustomer Review: PS3 Streaming from iMac - Huge improvement! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently setup my PS3 to stream media from my iMac. But, since iMac was on 802.11g wifi, and ps3 was connected at 100Mb, anything more than a small digitial camera video clip had terrible skippage.
I considered getting an 802.11n gigabit router, but since the ps3/imac are in the same general area, and I have a perfectly capable and durable Linksys wifi router, spending $[...] (after rebate) on 1 of these was a no brainer. I actually had to purchase 2 due to my setup, and it was STILL less than most 802.11N gigabit routers.
Result? Night and day difference! I am very pleased.
Customer Review: Best product I've every seen! Summary: 5 Stars
Bought it primarily to connect 2 PCs and NAS, but also connecting Internet Router and Xbox 360.
Profs:
* Small
* Cool (temperature)
* Metal case (asking why this is prof? Because not smelly plastic like most others!!! And of course metal provides extra shielding)
* Excellent quality
* Perfectly works on 1 Gigabit speed
* Package also contains 4 rubber legs and screws for on wall mounting (if needed)
* Green. Up to 60% power saving (as declared on the box). Of course haven't checked by myself! :-)
Cons:
None so far
Customer Review: Dropped Wireless on Desktops for Faster Speed Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this item because I set up a Windows 2003 file server in my home to store files from my various computers. I still use wireless for laptop, but no longer for desktop. Speeds file transfer speeds increased greatly from 100M to GB speed. Well worth the price. Unit has good build quality and is made of metal, not plastic. Unit has been working since I purchased it with no problems (switches are so much more robust than the routers they have to deal with). File transfer to W2k3 box is about 40MB/sec. (1GHz P3 server)
I like Netgear's Professional line.
Customer Review: Netgear "pro" line better than their consumer grade Summary: 5 Stars
I've used Netgear products for about 9 years now and have always been pleased, but I have had almost 100% failure of Netgear consumer grade gigE switches. :( Both lines are simple to set up and work as designed, but the lifetime warranty on the pro line seems to be backed up by the more bulletproof construction. I have one 6 year old 8 port gigE switch that has been running 24x7 in their pro line and I have had every consumer grade (the white kind) develop dead ports or die outright within a couple of years. The adage "a cheap tool is an expensive tool" applies to Netgear.
Customer Review: Fast, sturdy and small Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using this product for about a month (so far). It's metallic construction makes it heavier than other similar products in its category, but it also gives you the feeling of sturdiness and durability, specially if you move it a lot.
The installation is super simple and in my case I had no problem with defective parts (provided power supply and the switch itself).
This unit operates 24/7 in my home handling 2 media hubs and a desktop into the broadband Internet router.
When the price comes down again I am likely to purchase another one.
