Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR GS105 ProSafe 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Desktop Switch - 10/100/1000 MbpsCustomer Review: disappointing Summary: 1 Stars
i got this to replace a d-link gigabit switch switch. it worked for a few months, then the other day, something went wrong & it stopped transferring packets & just flashed its link lights. resetting it didn't help. i pulled it from the network & replaced it with an older linksys switch i've kept around. discovered both my imac & my lacie 2big network raid were still unable to connect. resetting their respective ethernet settings finally restored my network but gave me quite a fright. the lacie 2big network raid is still not right - see my review of that gadget.
i'd previously had a higher opinion of netgear. now i think i'll stick to linksys ...
Customer Review: Simple, dependable switch. No mess, no fuss. Summary: 5 Stars
For years and years Netgear has been producing a line of metal enclosed unmanaged (read no need to mess around with configuration) network switches. This line of metal enclosed Netgear switches have a proven track record -- I've used a dozen of them over the years without encountering any problems.
This 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch continues this flawless track record. I picked up two of these 5-port switches to ensure that my newly wired-for-Gigabit house maintains Gigabit speed on my internal wired network, only dropping to 100Mb/s Ethernet when network traffic crosses onto my router and then upstream to my DSL modem and beyond.
The Switch is small and light enough to be stashed out of the way attached to the side of a desk with the included mounting screws. The switch has two keyholes cut in the base of the unit. If you carefully position the two included screws in a vertical or horizontal surface (to mount on the underside of a table) then the switch will slide onto the screws to securely hang the switch.
Customer Review: FYI: This is more compact than the picture atop its page indicates Summary: 4 Stars
This switch is barely larger than its 5 ports require, without the 2 inches of wasted space indicated by the photo at the top of its description. The second photo, lower in the page is accurate.
Personally, I'm thrilled to have both it and its power brick so small, and like the durable metal case.
Ideal use for this device is a location with only one wired Ethernet RJ45 jack, and needing to plug in 2+ Ethernet devices at that location. We used to stock its Fast-Ethernet predecessor like popcorn for such uses, and even in my home I already have 2, with a third on order.
Update: I expect thanks are due to Amazon. I'd earlier updated this entry to report Netgear was refusing to honor a rebate on this product because I'd bought it from a non-participating dealer. But I recently got a corrected notice from Netgear, reporting the rebate will now be paid. Thanks Amazon!
Customer Review: Waste of money Summary: 1 Stars
The device is very flaky. It's incompatible with a lot of NICs of the leading manufactures (Intel, Realtek, Marvell). I have two PCs with Realtek network adapters and they both connect at maximum 100Mbit/s. On the other hand, my Lenova laptop and Iomega network HDD work just fine at 1000Mb/s.
It's a well known problem that is not mentioned by NetGear in the unit description (and because of this I think they are cheating customers). Unfortunately, for me it's too late to return the device but you can save your money by choosing another switch/manufacturer. The compatibility problem is well discussed at Netgear official forum, for example here: [...] encourage you to read this forum BEFORE buying the switch.
Customer Review: IT'S SMALL! Summary: 5 Stars
I think this was the smallest gig switch I could find, so I bought it. I've owned several other Netgear switches and have really liked them. This one is no different - works as advertised straight out of the box, although a bit warm as many have mentioned (a Netgear feature). All ports are on one side, and I like the fact that it has mounting holes and hardware that permit you to hang it out of sight so all that cable mess can stay off the top of the desk. Mounted with the ports facing down, all cables come up into the box neatly so I didn't experience any cabling issues as some have mentioned. Two thumbs up!
