After countless hours of troubleshooting and replacing my DSL with Cable Modem service I found that this Netgear 16 port switch was the problem. It worked good for about 1.5 years then crapped out. It started with constantly dropping VPN connections then just got worse from there. If you only are using this switch for about a year then buy it; If you expect it last longer forget it. This also happened with a 16 port dlink i purchases prior to this one. You get what you pay for.Customer Review: Awesome for large home networks

Awesome switch, All Steel enclosure is simple and sturdy.
If you have a lot of network ports in your house, this is the switch to own.
It is now 5 years since I bought this switch and it is still going strong. (although I do have a pretty serious power protection setup, that includes house-wide surge suppression in the house's breaker box, and an APC Battery backup to protect the power, and the data lines between the cable modem and router.

Purchased this for our growing network to address problems we were having with cheap switches. This Netgear switch works great and was easy to install. Has been up and running for over 6 months without a problem. Once we replaced the 2 cheap 8 port switches, all of our problems disappeared.
One recommendation is to label your ports right on the switch. Makes for easier troubleshooting and allows for easy replacement of cables.

I purchased this because my existing hub didn't have enough ports. This one is great! Out of the box, plug in and carry on smartly. It has been troublefree and works flawlessly. I do power down those items plugged into it (extra network hard drives) when I do not need to access them for the rest of the day. They are closeby, so easy to restart. Used it for the past 2 years as a LAN party switch. Rock solid, just about every other piece of networking equipment we've used (wireless routers ect.) has failed massively at one point or another, but this thing never skips a beat. Rock solid construction, it's lasted 2 years being hauled around from house to house on a weekly basis by a bunch of 18 year olds, what more can i say?
