Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NETGEAR FS116 16 Port Fast Ethernet Switch with Auto Uplink (10/100)Customer Review: Low Cost, Works Well Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to upgrade my home network from a 10M/sec hub built into my router to a 100M/sec switch. I probably could have gotten by with an 8 port product, but I've wired up a few outlets to a patch panel and didn't want to have to walk to the basement and patch around as I moved around the house. This 16 port version seemed like a good way to go.The product is very different styling than other Netgear products I have (not that I cared). It is small, not a much larger profile than the plugs themselves need, and the case is very sturdy and solid. With no fans, it makes no noise. My only negative comment is I would have preferred a standard 19 inch width for rack mounting, but others will prefer this more condense case. Fits on a shelf easy, or you could mount it to the wall with screws on the underside. And the end result -- much faster home network! This would be a good solution for anyone with a larger home or small office wired network, or someone who hosts LAN parties. 16 ports will connect a lot of people!
Customer Review: Unethical Netgear Does NOT Honor Warranties Summary: 1 Stars
The equipment is OK. I mean, not really much to go wrong since it's just a switch.
The problem is Netgear will not honor the supposed lifetime warranty. Worse is they have you on hold for ever, bounce you from one tech (sorry, they call them "engineers" - an insult to real engineers everywhere) to the next.
Finally they tell you the problem is software (even the power light does not illuminate yet somehow it's software, who'd a thunk it) and try and bill for premium support rates. When that was refused they hung up on me.
So, yes, Netgear stuff might seem like a good deal but be prepared to replace it on your own nickel when it fails (mine lasted 8 months).
Customer Review: Great Switch @ A Great Price! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a GREAT switch for starters! I have a DLINK Gamers router and a lot of devices that needed to be connected to my network (2 Direct HD DVR TV boxes, 2 Comcast HD DVR boxes, PS3, Blue Ray Disc Player and 2 laptops). Everything is now hard wired and working like a charm. It also leaves me room for expansion in the future, need to always think ahead. I have Comcast internet service DOSCIS 3.0 and this switch works awesome! I am not a wireless fan and looked for a while to purchase an affordable switch. Thanks to Amazon and a [...] rebate from Netgear you can't go wrong. I purchased all my network cables from [...].
Customer Review: Excellent quality, great price, no-brainer installation Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased one NETGEAR FS116 as a central switch in parallel with a 12-port network punch-down panel in our newly constructed home. Excellent price, no-brainer set-up, and so far, excellent performance.
I set up the new switch with a dozen 2-foot Cat5e patch cables, attaching the switch to my utility panel with the provided mounting screws, plugged the unit in, and I was up and running in about 10 minutes total time. As a survivor of the early days of PC networking, it's hard to imagine that things have become this easy and this affordable.
Customer Review: Netgear warranties not being honored! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased a Netgear JFS516 16 Port switch in May 2003. It came with a 2 year warranty. In February 2005 I smelled smoked. The switch burned out. Contacted Netgear warranty support only to learn I need an RMA number to return the switch. But I can't get an RMA number because Netgear runs an automated phone system that routes you to a disconnected number. After two months of trying and sending email messages to their customer support department the problem remains. After 90 days forget about any Netgear product warranty.
