Customer Review: Reality vs Neat Receipts advertising

I bought version 3.0 just before Christmas and expected something a bit better. It does the job, but takes quite a bit of effort.
1. Software Installation: clunky and slow, very slow. It took about 20 minutes to completely install the software. It is very important to shut down any anti-virus software first.
2. Actual Scanning Procedure: There is no alignment bar,so you have to hope that you inserting the document in a straight fashion. It does not hold the large documents well, so you need to push the document a bit while using the other hand to click the SCAN button.
3. Scan Results: The scan result is high quality, but there is a very important missing feature. There is no alignment option to ensure the document is straight. So some of my scans are crooked. Considering the size of the software (95 MB), I would have expected an option to straighten the scans.
4. Document Filing: This is the strong point of the program. The scans do a good job of identifying the details in the receipts... sales tax, amount paid, etc. but the Smart Sorting feature is very slow - cleaning, analyzing, filing takes 30+ seconds per document.

I can't say enough about how much I love this product! I've bought 2 of them (one for a friend who is also an independent contractor).
If you are at all even contemplating trying to make your life easier, this is what you want! I have been keeping envelopes upon envelopes of receipts, manually entering them into QuickBooks, or exporting them to Excel... NO MORE!!
The OCR makes it a snap! I put a receipt in the scanner, it reads the vendor, date, tax, total... remembers what account I've assigned in the past for the vendor, tracks approx 50 or more tax lines... it really is incredible! And that's just the tip of the iceberg... it creates multiple reports, varying database finds... it does so much and I have only begun to delve into that side of it.
My partner (before I purchased this product) didn't understand why I couldn't just use our existing scanner for our receipts. Once I showed her the software and the fact that most of the time I don't have to type a single thing... well, she understood.
For anyone who needs to keep receipts, this is a must have... it truly changed my life :)

The idea of a very limited scanner for only receipts is not that great. In anycase in the company I work, one was bought. The software is very big and takes over a lot of resources. It sets up a SQL database just to handle receipts. Using the device was very difficult to scan correctly. Only if the paper goes in a certain way, you can not push it too much but also you can not leave it to take the paper by itself, etc very tricky. The device cannot be connected with 'some' USB hubs (I tried several powered ones (2) and non powered ones (3) and none worked so make sure you have one USB port free right in your PC). And eventually, the computer was shut down, the software stoped functioning and was impossible to uninstall without complete reformat of the PC (System Restore to before installation of the scanner failed). The drastic step of reformat was taken since the software would not allow any other TWAIN source to be installed and when time came to install a REAL scanner the reformat was necessary. Same yourself some trouble. Get a free Print to PDF freeware and a regular scanner and you are done without headaches.Customer Review: Best office tool ever

I purchased a NeatReceipts scanner about 2 years ago, and love it. My two best reasons are as follows.
First, I went through an audit last year and the auditor sat next to me and looked over the various receipts she wanted more info on, and asked me to print out a couple and I was out of there in 2 1/2 hours. No muss, no fuss. She even gave me credit for some things she saw that I had missed. I ended up getting enough money back to more than cover the cost of NeatReceipts.
Second, I had both my cars broken into in front of my house one morning. They swiped both my GPS units. When I talked to the insurance company, they needed proof on purchase date and price. I searched thru my Neat Receipts database by vendor and found them in 2 minutes. I printed them out to PDF and e-mailed them to the adjuster. He could not believe it! He had them 5 minutes after I filed my claim, and wired the money to my account the next day. HE called me to make sure I got it, and told me how he wished more of his customers were that good at recordkeeping. Thanks Neat Receipts!!
Customer Review: It is a good option if you travel

It is a great solution if you travel a lot due it is easy to use, light and small.
The software allows you to save business cards, receipts and documents. Some times the software recognizes the information in the files scanned in the right fields....some times not.
It is very simple to convert and export the files scanned into a pdf file.
The only problem I saw is that: when you scan a business card and put the contact info into the right fields, there is not any way to migrate this information to lotus or exchange....and it makes that you should carry another programm to storage the information of your contacts...
The receipts section works well, it is simple and easy to use. It allows you to create files to make expenses report and even the taxes involved. The only problem is you could use it only in US dollars, it should have the chance to use different currencies with a field (conversion rate) that calculate the change into the currency you want. It is a device to use when you travel and there are a lot of currencies involved....
