Customer Review: Financial software with no security!

This software is a nice idea, scanning & OCR'ing your receipts, business cards & documents. But it offers not even a tiny bit of security, such as a password. It also took me three hours on the phone with Neat Receipts staff to get it installed.
This software uses a SQL server database to store the data which means the data is on your C drive, regardless what drive you install the software on and cannot be moved to another drive. (Unless you are a SQL wizard & can move the database yourself.) That means anyone you let use your computer can get into this program. It also means unless your C drive is encrypted (IE Truecrypt), anyone who steals your computer will have access to the information in the database. As of this writing (7/22/08), per the message board on their website, the issue of security is not something the Neat Receipts staff addresses. Several users have repeatedly brought the issue of security to their attention over the past several months. The Neat Receipts response is either ("yes, that's a concern") or ignoring the posts.
So if security is something you're not concerned with, you should be. If it is something you're concerned with, I'd suggest other scanning software (IE Paperport) that allow you to store your electronic documents on encrypted drives or folders (IE Axcrypt).

Customer Review: good Idea, Overall Product below Expectations

If you are a road warrior as I am, (180 days of the year out of the country), the thought of simplifying handling of receipts is fantastic. I kept walking by the Kiosk at the airport and finally purchased the PC version as they did not have the MAC version out yet. My excitement became utter disappointment in the overall lack of functionality the product has, program errors/ bugs, and constant locking up. I finally got the mac version, and the only decent thing is that it is faster than the PC, but has even less functionality.
I finally had to accept that all I can do is just scan my receipts and attach to an email with my company expense report- it's like having a mobile file cabinet, with out carrying all those receipts.
If you are considering this, do not expect allot, and their customer support - whilst nice, are great in providing work-arounds for the lack of functionality the product has - but then, that is not the intent of customer support.
My organization was looking at purchasing one for every consultant - 210 of us, and we decided against it, when I let our finance and colleagues use mine for a bit.
I would recommend that if you are considering this, review the comments, and consider how you really want to use it.
Lastly, the sales people at the airport Kiosk are not well informed, lots of the responses to my questions where "I do not really know", or "I think it can do that"...that should of been a warning sign....
Customer Review: Nice scanner and it works with USAA checking!

I am not someone who needs a scanner in my everyday life. My main focus for buying this was because I use USAA banking. USAA is an online only bank and the only way you can deposit checks with them to scan the check through a browser page on their site.
The problem was is that I never could find a list of mobile scanners that were supported and my first attempt failed miserably for me. So with no little amount of trepidation did I buy this. For all those USAA users, it works! Took a little bit of tinkering to make it work but it did great and my checks are being sent in now.
What I didn't expect was my actual joy with the software though. In no time I found myself copying my important documents (tax returns, etc) into the device for storage. Then I found myself getting 2 year old credit card statements. A little while later I am saving my receipts. It is just so addictive and easy to store my documents electronically and free up physical space (who needs a file cabinet any more!).
My only major issue is that the database is getting rather unwieldy to load. As someone who programs databases I am not sure if it is just the hardware difference or if the programming wasn't indexed or optimized. I have heard 4.0 is faster but I am unsure if it is worth an upgrade when this does everything I want after the initial start-up annoyance.
Either way you will be more than happy with this device.
Customer Review: Excellent for the road warrior

I travel every week for work. Not some, not most, every week. I am also self employed, so not only must I file a detailed expense report for my client reimbursement, I must have very accurate records for my taxes. Neat Receipts does this all, and makes it a complete no-brainer. I don't know what others are saying about the OCR not working, however it is about 95% accurate for me, and considering the condition of some of my crumbled receipts that is simply amazing. Sometimes even I can't read them, but the OCR still figures out what they are for.
The export and reporting for submission is nothing short of a miracle and I don't even have any suggestions for them to make it any easier. It simply works.
My only complaint I have, and the reason it misses a 5 star rating is that the program is HUGE and takes considerable time to start up. I'd like to see it streamlined a bit - or maybe make some of the functions of this considerably complex software more modular as there is a lot there I don't, and will never, use. Plus the database engine sometimes gets out of sync if you have crash. Their INCREDIBLE, and I don't use that word lightly, INCREDIBLE technical support showed me the not so obvious method of fixing that and I have never since had an issue with the software.
Now if they would only get their Mac version to work this well - so I can't stop running this in VM Fusion (which works perfectly btw).
Customer Review: Neat little device to make a habit of using!

This is a nice well built item and in the package I bought, it came with a nice hard case, a soft slip cover as well as a wall-mount bracket. I keep it in the hard case with the USB cable and it fits easily in my bag.
The v3.0 Software installs nicely out of the box and the user interface is intuitive.
I highly recommend that you spend half an hour going through the tutorials on the neatreceipts website...it helped me get set up properly.
I have been using it for a week now - mainly to scan a pile of receipts for reimbursements which used to pile up. I am hoping to be more timely with this device in getting my reimbursement requests turned in.
My only complaint is that the overall process is rather slow..the SW takes a while to process each scanned item. But this is understandable considering it runs an OCR pass on scanned business cards and receipts and extracts information to populate the addressbook and receipt record. Takes about a minute per receipt or business card...but I guess if I keep it handy and scan in the paperwork periodically, this can be a very useful and practical little toy.
Now that I have this, I am considering scanning in copies of important documents I keep in my study - stuff like kids' birth certificates, passports etc to store away digitally...just in case.
This is a device I would certainly recommend you take a look at.
