I wanted to give this 5 stars except for some very serious bugs. After painstakingly scanning and correcting $5,000 worth of receipts, the program had an unhandled exception and lost all the data. They should have implemented this with some sort of incremental save. I lost hours of my life and I would like them back please. There is an option to back up the database from the tools menu, but it's not a quick procedure. Maybe the ideal would be to back up the database and exit the program every half hour to ensure the data is recorded permanently before proceeding.
If it weren't for the data loss, I would really give this thing high marks. It does an admirable job recognizing receipts from major companies like Safeway and Office Depot. However, it frequently gets the sales tax incorrect and you have to babysit it, keeping an eye on the values it suggests for the date, total, etc.. Scanning is slow and you have to gently encourage the receipt through the scanner so that the scan is straight. It should have some sort of sliding plastic guide that you can align so you don't have to do that. Then you have to eyeball its results to look for errors. It makes errors about 1 in 3 times, depending on the quality of the receipt, whether it's wrinkled, or faded. Brand new receipts from major companies it does quite well with.
I'm going to keep mine cause I need a solution like this so badly, but it has some serious flaws that are silly. It could be a 5 star product, but isn't. By the way, I'm using NeatReceipts Pro version 3.0 SP1.

I read through the reviews on various sites before buying this. I almost didn't based on some bad reviews.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I'm moderately tech savvy and got it up and running in minutes. I've found it easy to use and was impressed by the receipt recognition.
I wonder if the people who didn't like it are more technically advanced then I am and expect it to do handpsprings and make them toast and are unhappy when it doesn't.
People complained it was slow. I don't find it slow at all...and I tend to be the impatient type. I really thought it was going to be painfully slow from the reviews I read. I'm perfectly happy with it's speed. I often do multiple page receipts with no complaints.
Is it 100% accurate. Of course not. Mostly I find that it is on clear receipts. On ones that are faded or wrinkled I have to go in and correct information which takes under a minute. The recognition software I find to be really cool and it does save you time epecially if you use Quick Books as I am.
I can scan in a receipt say from Target and then export the information into Quick Books by selecting one button and it's done. How cool is that?!
Don't buy this expecting not to have to double check your information and not expecting to never have to make corrections. I check over everything to make sure it's correct, even doing that it's faster then typing in each receipt into Quick Books.
So far I can't complain and would suggest it to anyone without hesitation.

This is a truly great idea, but the execution leaves much to be desired. The scanner has a great difficulty with any receipt which does not have a perfectly straight, smooth edge and it will skew the receipt if it has folds--particularly on thermal receipts. Cannot seem to remember company logos and names or to recognize them if they are not printed very clearly. You cannot split a receipt without it splitting the Sales Tax and therefore, in a state like Washington, where you can deduct the Sales Tax, the records are inaccurate if part of what you purchased was non-taxable and part was taxable. Does not play well with Quicken, interface with anything newer than Quicken 5.0 is awkward and very inadequate at best. It can be done, but not smoothly. Cannot split a receipt as Quicken does leaving a single total with different portions of that receipt allocated to different categories. The only thing it can do that with is Sales Tax which it insists must be exported as "Tax:Sales", and you cannot change that. Business cards can only be scanned into a single file, so you can't build a Supplier file and a Client file. NeatReceipts would do well to spend a great effort to allow flexibility and ease in interfacing with programs such as Quicken, Money, etc. Even adapt some of the "Look and feel" of the programs with which the user intends to interface.

I purchased Neat Receipts because it came recommended by my sister, who is a business owner. Since purchasing this software & scanner from AMAZON on May 12, 2008 I have tried to install this software to a Dell Laptop (Windows Vista), a HP Mini laptop (Windows XP), Dell laptop (Windows XP) and a HP Touch Smart (Windows Vista). The reason I tried so many computer is because I thought that there may be a compatibility issue with Vista, as I have had my share of headaches from Vista. I have not been successful in any of the installations and have received a variety of errors ranging from not being able to find the Neat Receipts Software to the most current error message "Your current operating system is not supported. Neat Receipts Professional requires the 32 bit version of windows XP or later. Please install Neat Receipts Professional of a different machine running a supporting version of windows". This is a new computer (purchased Christmas 2008)! The other computers are less than two years old. I have requested help twice from Neat Receipts. The first time I was given an automated response with instructions to create an account with their website. I'm still waiting on the second request for help. Please let me say that I am very disappointed with this product and company. I consider myself an intelligent business woman. I try to give new products the benefit of a doubt, but attempting to install this software and to get it running has caused me more aggravation than the $184.00, that I wasted on this product, is worth.Customer Review: Absolute HORRIBLE waste of time (and money)

I've been told for months that NeatReceipts update ($20 cost to existing customers for version 3.0) would have better exporting to Quicken. Specifically I'm disappointed that MEMO data (you know - that line that has been on checks for 100 years now) does not get included in exported data. After finding that was not true, I called again and was told that the newest version 4.0 (another $30 --am I an idiot or what--) would definitely include complete data export that I need (helpful for IRS audits--the last 3 years now--God help me). 4.0 ALSO DOES NOT do what they claim. Unfortunately I really need that MEMO info, which is why I bother to put it in the field.
NR designers are not aware that people might want to use the most basic of information and they are the ones who decide what information will be exported for Quicken. Oh, and they not only promise to include basic changes in future updates (and charge for them)--and then fail to do so-- they are HORRIBLE at even putting out updates.
PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER! I've spent $200 on the scanner/software and $50 more on updates... and the thing is costing me time!
AWFUL online support. LiveChat support is very uninformed and not helpful and phone support times are limited to usual work hours (you know, when I am WORKING).
There is just nothing useful, helpful or convenient about this. Too bad because the general idea is great and the technology is out there (somewhere - not in NeatReceipts, however). Sorry to disappoint!
