Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of NeatReceipts Professional Mobile Receipt and Document Scanner and Software Combination Version 3.0Customer Review: 2 Year Update Summary: 5 Stars
In March of 2006 I wrote this...
"I can hardly believe it. Just install it and it works! And boy, does it. A few years back all the rage in big corporations was "Optical Storage". (I know cause I was there) There wasn't anything "Optical" about the service but it did store a copy of the paper document and a system user could access one or thousands of documents by various standard fields; vendor, author, addressee, etc. and print one or all and get reports.
This gadget does the same thing. It's wonderful, even if you are only operating a small business. The only problem is I am having trouble remembering that I don't have to file and cross file every piece of paper after it is scaned. "
Since then the product has only improved. Reading the subsequent negative comments here I can only conclude that the users did not grasp the intent of the product (complaints about what the scanner would not do) or own a computer with a bad Windows install or too little memory.
Like any OCR program, it will not read every receipt with complete accuracy. One must review the information scanned from the receipt for accuracy. I too would estimate that the program is about 90% accurate.
I admit that since I use this in business, the "problem" of not importing electronic (PDF and such) receipts has never come up. I receive so few that I just print them when received and scan them later with all the other paper receipts each week.
I can say that in 2 and 1/2 years I have never had a "lock up" or lost any data. After a complete Windows failure last month I used the Windows "Repair" function three times and got Windows going again. Several programs that use OCR (Twain) no longer worked, including this one. One call to Neat and they e-mailed an automated fix... which fixed all the other programs as well. I cannot explain why others find their support sub par.
Since first using Neat, updates have improved speed and accuracy and I am looking forward the version 4, which promises the be even better.
Customer Review: Pure Garbage, Please Do Not Buy This Item Summary: 1 Stars
Benefit from my experience, please, and search for something really reputable. This is pure garbage. And, I cannot understand anyone who claims actual usability much less benefit from this item. It is a toy; moreover, garbage. It's marketing appeals to consumers who need the professional organization that companies have but can't get it; but these people don't deliver it. The software is horrible: Receipts displayed on screen are invariably inaccurate and each entry must be corrected. Test: the same receipt scanned twice produces different results! Same for business cards. Also, the "windows" are not the smooth, seamless, interfunctional devices depicted on the box cover. You're thinking the reputation of Microsoft or even Intuit, the makers of Quickbooks, etc. Not here, these windows hardly budge nor navigate logically: sizing and display of windows and items is NOT what the advertising depicts. You're in an uncreative, visual, database straight-jacket, staring at boot-leg windows, with no funtionality. The hardware is horrible: The product does not let you "scan and process multiple documents". In fact, it can't even scan a single receipt without procrastinating. I've had to gingerly feed in each receipt and make sure the edges are crisp or else the machine won't take it. (Much like the ATM bill receptors we're all used to). And, did I mention that Service Pack 2 and ALL updates is a requirement (Windows XP) for the software to load and function? I spent 4 hours "upgrading" my computer with all the latest "patches" and "security fixes" and 1 hour with Neat Receipts customer service before Neat Receipts 3.0 would install. Neat Receipts refused to acknowledge that they did not print such a requirement on their box. In today's economic times, no one can afford to throw away the equivalent of half a car payment on a non-functioning piece of plastic that will wind up collecting dust. I am going way out of my way to return this non-functioning piece of garbage and talk to some professionals to find out how they manage their receipts.
Customer Review: A "Must Have" Little Gadget!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned this little mobile scanner and the related software for about two years now -- initially saw it advertised in an in-flight magazine and bought it from Amazon. While there are numerous mobile scanners available in the market, it's certainly the software that sets this one apart.
I'd go so far as to say that this little gadget now ranks on the indispensability scale right up there with TiVo, iPod and HDTV.
First, I DO NOT use it with a laptop, but have it mounted with my desktop -- it sits perfectly on TOP of my thin flat-screen Dell monitor, and the USB plugs into the back of the monitor (I DID purchase separately a left-hand USB cord for a more streamlined fit).
I scan just about everything now -- and rarely use my downstairs All-In-One scanner because this little gem pretty much does it all (except, of course, hi res photo scanning, etc.)
The software is robust and friendly, and the folks at Neat have continued to improve an already nice app. On those few occasions that I have had issues, I must say that their Customer Support is PERHAPS THE VERY BEST I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. They are very capable techs located in the Philadelphia area, and it is always a pleasure to work with them. Truly, they know their product backwards and forwards.
I actually don't use the scanner/software for receipts as much as I do for other docs that I want to archive -- medical records, invoices, service records, etc. Of course, the mobile scanner does not have an automatic document feeder (even though you can scan multi-pages manually), but I now see that they are introducing a new ADF type scanner.
I'd say I use this scanner every couple days, and I would immediately purchase another if this one went belly up.
A great product and a great company. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: 3.0 is really, really good Summary: 5 Stars
I've had a NeatReceipts machine for awhile, and it has become an office tool I wonder how I lived without for so many years. It's great for tax records, expense reports, all that stuff, but the biggest difference it's made in my life is just GETTING RID OF THE PAPER! I had piles all over my desk for years. Cab receipts, travel receipts, charitable donation receipts, etc. Not just sitting on top of the desk, but in files and folders all over the place. When it came time to do the taxes, or do the accounting, sometimes I could find what I was looking for, sometimes I couldn't. The NeatReceipts changed all that. Now I just scan the piece of paper in, put it in the right file on my computer (or even in a Misc file, because it's easy to search and find later). I back up my computer regularly, so I never worry about losing the important data to back up my financial paperwork. And I've moved from a desk with big file drawers to basically a computer drawer and a couple of shelves.
I upgraded to the new 3.0 NeatReceipts because I figured they've known what they're doing so far, so I tried the new one. My favorite thing about it is the ability to produce pdfs easily. And I can scan in a pdf and edit the text. I was only able to do that previously by taking it to my brother in law and having him scan it and use some utility he bought for his machine. I haven't tried all the new stuff yet because I haven't gone through tax season yet, which is when my NeatReceipts really gets a workout. But the new version is much more searchable - like when I was looking for an Embassy Suites receipt the other day and could search on "Embassy Suites" and find it.
I highly recommend the NeatReceipts, and even more, I recommend enjoying throwing away all that paper.
Customer Review: Manufacturer doesn't care about current customers Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this item a little less than a year ago. It was hard to justify the cost, but the idea sounded great and my receipts / business cards were piling up.
Initial installation wasn't too bad. It wants to run constantly, and if you force it to stop, getting it to go again often means a reboot. If you let it run it hogs memory. Support questions to the company went unanswered.
Scanning wasn't great. I had to rescan several times and it was quite cumbersome to enter data. Basic software programming UX concerns, such as tab order, were completely ignored when they created their software.
I wasn't very impressed and then I upgraded my computer when my old one died. All of my data is backed up, but as my new machine is Windows 7, I can't access it. The company wants me to pay for an entire new copy not just an upgrade. Throughout my transfer of data to my new machine, not a single other piece of software required that I purchase a new set without a discounted price for Windows 7. The company completely blew me off. So, now unless I install on an old XP machine or buy a whole new set, I can't access my dataset. You can bet your sweet bippy this company won't get another penny from me. I will get my old machine running, export the data or print it out, and kiss them goodbye.
In a day and age when customer service is all that sets apart one company from another, this one completely falls down. I saw an ad on a service hiring people to put positive ads up. Though their name was not on it, the ad was for "a scanning product which adds business cards, receipts, and other documents into company software complete with actual scanner". You do the math on the +5 reviews that don't seem to mesh with what the rest of us are writing.
